During your Anaheim vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Cable Cars
Although they may not be San Francisco's most practical means of transportation, cable cars are certainly the best loved and are a must-experience when visiting the city. Designated official historic landmarks by the National Park Service in 1964, they clank up and down the city's steep hills like mobile museum pieces, tirelessly hauling thousands of tourists each day to nowhere in particular.London-born engineer Andrew Hallidie invented San Francisco's cable cars in 1869. He got the idea by serendipity. As the story goes, Hallidie was watching a team of overworked horses haul a heavily laden carriage up a steep San Francisco slope. As he watched, one horse slipped and the car rolled back, dragging the other tired beasts with it. At that moment, Hallidie resolved that he would invent a mechanical contraption to replace such horses, and just 4 years later, in 1873, the first cable car made its maiden run from the top of Clay Street. Promptly ridiculed as "Hallidie's Folly," the cars were slow to gain acceptance. One early onlooker voiced the general opinion by exclaiming, "I don't believe it -- the damned thing works!"Even today, many visitors have difficulty believing that these vehicles, which have no engines, actually work. The cars, each weighing about 6 tons, run along a steel cable, enclosed under the street in a center rail. You can't see the cable unless you peer straight down into the crack, but you'll hear its characteristic clickity-clanking sound whenever you're nearby. The cars move when the gripper (not the driver) pulls back a lever that closes a pincerlike "grip" on the cable. The speed of the car, therefore, is determined by the speed of the cable, which is a constant 9 1/2 mph -- never more, never less. The two types of cable cars in use hold a maximum of 90 and 100 passengers, and the limits are rigidly enforced. The best views are from the outer running boards, where you have to hold on tightly when taking curves.Hallidie's cable cars have been imitated and used throughout the world, but all have been replaced by more efficient means of transportation. San Francisco planned to do so, too, but the proposal met with so much opposition that the cable cars' perpetuation was actually written into the city charter in 1955. The mandate cannot be revoked without the approval of a majority of the city's voters -- a distant and doubtful prospect.San Francisco's three existing cable car lines form the world's only surviving system of cable cars, which you can experience for yourself should you choose to wait in the endless boarding line (up to a 2-hr. wait in summer).
Haas-Lilienthal House
Of the city's many gingerbread Victorians, this handsome Queen Anne house is one of the most flamboyant. The 1886 structure features all the architectural frills of the period, including dormer windows, flying cupolas, ornate trim, and winsome turret. The elaborately styled house is now a museum, its rooms fully furnished with period pieces. The Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage maintains the house and offers docent-led tours. The 1-hour tours (the only way to see the house) start every 20 to 30 minutes.
Ghiradelli Square
This National Historic Landmark property dates from 1864, when it served as a factory making Civil War uniforms, but it's best known as the former chocolate and spice factory of Domingo Ghirardelli (pronounced "Gear-a-deli"), who purchased it in 1984. The factory has since been converted into a three-level mall containing 50-plus stores and 11 dining establishments. Scheduled street performers entertain regularly in the West Plaza and fountain area. Incidentally, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company still makes chocolate, but its factory is in a lower-rent district in the East Bay. Still, if you have a sweet tooth, you won't be disappointed at the mall's fantastic old-fashioned soda fountain.

Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel
The Renaissance Stanford Court Hotel is located atop prestigious Nob Hill overlooking the dramatic San Francisco skyline. The hotel sits where railroad millionaire Leland Stanford's mansion once stood and his legacy lives on throughout the hotel. Our lovely brick courtyard has a beaux-arts fountain and garden setting. The lobby features a colorful Tiffany-inspired glass dome, turn-of-the-century antiques and three hundred sixty degree mural depicting early San Francisco history. Luxurious ...

Great location

Dawn, Ontario, CA

Neiman Marcus is worth the trip.

The Room was very comfortable, however loud. I asked for a room not facing the street but one was apparently not available, the hotel didn't want to extend themselves much. If your room faces the street you are woken at 6am. by trash trucks and traffic. This is not good if you're on holiday and want to sleep in as we were.

Great for sleeping!

Anonymous, Portland, OR

Union Square has a number of shops nearby, but instead of milling around on one of the three million floors of Macy's, walk a few blocks down to the mall - which includes a nice mulitplex.

This is a hotel for spending the night. There are no real amenities to speak of. The business center is small, NOT free, and keeps odd hours. We had a very small room. The attached restaurant has passable, but definitely second-rate food, though is priced as if the food were far better. The concierge was completely useless and unconcerned. However, the room was very comfortable and clean. The front desk and bellmen were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is very close to Union Square and Chinatown. Cabs and public transit are both easy to find. Much of San Francisco is within an ambitious walk.

Old and New - the Best

Cheryl, Philadelphia, PA

one block to Macy's and practically every other major store in San Francisco worth visiting - all just off Union Square.

We found the Handlery Hotel to be a combination of the best of both worlds....the old and the new. It's an old grand hotel with all the bells and whistles one would have expected of those kinds of places....lots of marble and brass. It is also a new hotel, with lots of amenities and one of the best restaurants we visited anywhere in San Francisco. The staff were absolutely the best we have come across in a very long time. There was no question they did not answer, nor wish they would not try and fulfill. Just a very professional and upbeat group of people. For location it is absolutely the TOPS. It's located right on Union Square with transportation available of every kind. And because it is old, every taxi driver, everyone in San Francisco knows it. For value it can't be beat.

Excellent for Price

David, Tampa, FL, 2007-02-23

Shopping within a two-minute walk includes Macy's, Saks, Borders, Starbuck's, Gucci, YSL, Victoria's Secret, etc. A huge mall, anchored by Nordstrom's, is only a five-minute walk.

Location couldn't be better. The room was not very large, but two people have plenty of room. We stayed in a king deluxe, so I wouldn't go any less. This was about right for the money. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and the hotel had a great one (The Grill). The streetcar runs right by the corner, about half a block, and there are plenty of buses and cabs. Chinatown is about a three minute walk across Union Square. The room was always kept clean and supplied, beds made, and neatened up each morning. The staff and concierge were really helpful and friendly. Our stay was excellent and we will return to the Handlery when we go back to San Francisco.

Very nice.

Right in the heart of the shopping district.

I was alittle sad that after I picked the hotel becuase of the pool it was undergoing renovations during the day with jackhammering, which was a little annoying. However, the staff moved up another room on the alley side away from the noise which was nice. Plenty of space on the club side for 3 adults plus baby which is a rarety in San Fran. The location was great, right near everything. Separate vanity area outside of toilet area, which was nice with baby. We used the extra vanity space for changing table which worked great. Had enough floor space to park the stoller in the room without it being in the way as well.

A great value!

gary, Chicago, IL, 2007-02-07

We had dinner in the hotel restaurant famous for their steaks. We had a great priced breakfast right next door but there were many cafes and bakeries within one block of the front door of the hotel.

Handlery Union Square provided us with the best hotel room we stayed in of 6 on our most recent holiday. The rates were slightlly below average for the area, especially for the fine room and amenities that were in it. Their restaurant was also beautiful with a fine chef and excellent food. Located in the heart of San Francisco, it was close to many restaurants, bars, shops and large stores within a one block walking distance including the famous trolley. Many Europeans use this hotel and the day/night we were there many of the customers were speaking French.

Excellent location for families

chrystal, Burbank, CA, 2006-12-29

If you choose to take a ride on the cable car which is nearby the wait in line can be very long. Take the cable car to your destination for the experience and catch a cab for the ride back. It's less expensive and faster.

The Handerly Union Square was the perfect location for our family excursion during the Christmas season. The room was very comfortable and spacious. There was enough room for my husband and I along with our children. There were two queen sized beds and a quaint sitting area. I enjoyed the space of the large bathroom as well as the seperate vanity area which allowed my family to quickly get up and out. I really enjoyed having the double sided glass sliding doors which offered great views of the city exspecially at night. My children were so excited with the lights that decorated the square. The location was outstanding and offered endless things to do. There was lots of prime shopping including a Macy's with several floors of endless goodies, and great restaurants just a short walk away. I also noticed that there is a nearby Theater offering great stage performances. I would recommend a stay at the Handerly for families, a romantic getaway, or just a getaway with the girls.
