During your San Francisco vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Francisco Zoo (& Children's Zoo)
Located between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Merced, in the southwest corner of the city, the San Francisco Zoo is a fun place to take the kids -- especially if you make it to the hands-on Children's Zoo. The zoo, which was founded at its present site adjacent to the ocean in 1929, is 125 acres, with 100 acres currently developed. Over 950,000 visitors come here annually to see the almost 950 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Exhibit highlights include the new Lipman Family Lemur Forest, a forest setting for five endangered species of lemurs from Madagascar that features interactive components for the visitor; Gorilla World, a tranquil setting for a family group of western lowland gorillas; Koala Crossing, which connects to the Australian WalkAbout exhibit with its kangaroos, wallaroos, and emu; Penguin Island, home to a large breeding colony of Magellanic Penguins; the Feline Conservation Center, a wooded sanctuary and breeding facility for endangered snow leopards and other small cats; and the Primate Discovery Center, home to rare and endangered monkeys. In the South American Tropical Forest building, a large green anaconda can be found as well as other South American reptile and bird species. Puente al Sur (Bridge to the South) has a pair of giant anteaters, a rare Baird's tapir, and capybaras. The Lion House is home to rare Sumatran and Siberian tigers and African lions. You can see the big cats fed every day at 2pm (except Mon). African Savanna, the latest exhibit, which opened in mid-2004, is a 3-acre mixed-species habitat with giraffes, zebras, antelope, and birds. The 6-acre Children's Zoo offers kids and their families opportunities for close-up encounters with domestic rare breeds of goats, sheep, ponies, and horses in the Family Farm. Touch and feel small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians along the Nature Trail (open Memorial Day to Labor Day), and gaze at eagles and hawks stationed on Hawk Hill. Visitors can see the inner-workings of the Koret Animal Resource Center, a thriving facility that houses the animals used in the educational outreach programs, and visit the incredible Insect Zoo. One of the Children's Zoo's most popular exhibits is the Meerkat and Prairie Dog exhibit, where kids can crawl through tunnels and play in sand, just like these two amazing burrowing species.Don't miss the Little Puffer miniature steam train, which takes passengers around a 1/3-mile track, and the historic Dentzel Carousel (both $2 per ride).
Coit Tower
In a city known for its great views and vantage points, Coit Tower is one of the best. Located atop Telegraph Hill, just east of North Beach, the round, stone tower offers panoramic views of the city and the bay.Completed in 1933, the tower is the legacy of Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a wealthy eccentric who left San Francisco a $125,000 bequest "for the purpose of adding beauty to the city I have always loved" and as a memorial to its volunteer firemen. She had been saved from a fire as a child and held the city's firefighters in particularly high esteem.Inside the base of the tower are impressive murals titled Life in California and 1934, which were completed under the WPA during the New Deal. They are the work of more than 25 artists, many of whom had studied under Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. The only bummer: The narrow street leading to the tower is often clogged with tourist traffic. If you can, find a parking spot in North Beach and hoof it.
Lombard Street
Known (erroneously) as the "crookedest street in the world," this whimsically winding block of Lombard Street draws thousands of visitors each year (much to the chagrin of neighborhood residents, most of whom would prefer to block off the street to tourists). The angle of the street is so steep that the road has to snake back and forth to make a descent possible. The brick-lined street zigzags around the residences' bright flower gardens, which explode with color during warmer months. This short stretch of Lombard Street is one-way, downhill, and fun to drive. Take the curves slowly and in low gear, and expect a wait during the weekend. Save your film for the bottom where, if you're lucky, you can find a parking space and take a few snapshots of the silly spectacle. You can also take staircases (without curves) up or down on either side of the street. In truth, most locals don't understand what the fuss is all about. I'm guessing the draw is the combination of a classic, unusually steep San Francisco street and a great photo op. FYI: Vermont Street, between 20th and 22nd streets in Potrero Hill, is even more crooked, but not nearly as picturesque.

Sweetest staff

Anonymous, Charlotte, NC, 2006-12-18

Pubs, bars and clubs nearby.

Not only is the location right smack in the middle of San Fran, but the staff is amazingly sweet. Free parking is always awesome. I loved it and will go there again on my next San Fran vacation.

Great time in San Francisco

Jeanette, San Diego, CA, 2006-11-04

There is a Walgreens about a block away on Polk Street, so you can all the stuff you forgot to bring near the hotel.

The Castle Inn was a great hotel for the value and location. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The owners of the hotel were very helpful. They guided us to the hotel from the 101 freeway and let us park for a couple hours after we had checked out so we could watch college football at a local sports bar. It was located within walking distance of most major attractions within the Wharf district of San Francisco. When I say walking distance though, I mean for those who are able to hoof it quite a bit. My husband and I loved it because we were around ten blocks from Fisherman's Wharf, five or six from Gharidelli Square and Lombard Street. There were lots of nice restaurants and cafes nearby to choose from. We definitely enjoyed Shanghai Kellys (a bar right down the way on Polk Street -- really neat historical references in there). We loved San Francisco and would recommend staying at the Castle Inn if you are looking for a hotel that is above the pits! Happy travels!

Wonderful food at a great price at Tai Chai within one block on the Inn.

The staff at Castle Inn were very helpful with pointing out great dining in the local area at great prices. The Inn is located in a pleasant neighborhood within walking distance to many attractions. The staff provided maps to all of the interesting places and provide a transportation list for those who prefer not to walk.

Good for the Money

Lisa, Phoenix, AZ, 2006-09-17

Peter D's was great for breakfast.

The Bed was comfortable and overall it was worth the price. There are some good restaurants in the area. Taking a cab from the hotel to any tourist spot ran 6-8 dollars including tip but we took the bus often and that was only $2. The room was good sized and had a frig and freezer, dressing table and small table and two chairs. The tub was very clean but things were a little worn but not bad. There are no amnities (pool, spa etc.) But if you have a car you get to park free which in SF is a big deal.

nice quiet hotel

Ronald, Providence, RI, 2006-08-22

One block west of the hotel at another hotel is a good breakfast place.

The hotel was very quiet. I could not hear heighbors through the walls. I guess there were some teenagers running the hall way, but the hotel staff asked them to stop. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. They were knowlegeable and knew the area well. The rooms were clean. There isn't a pool, but San Francisco is cool and a pool would have to be indoors to be enjoyed in my opinion. The area the hotel is in was safe. We used public transportation which was one to two blocks away. The cable cars were two blocks away. If you want a quiet hotel convenient to the attractions, this was a good one.

Great hotel for the money

Brent, 2006-07-12

Cab fare to and from the major attractions (e.g., Chinatown) was relatively cheap ($5-10) if you don't want to walk -- much cheaper than the street cars and much more convenient than buses.

This was a very good hotel for the money. It is located in a good part of SF -- within walking distance of Fishermans' Wharf and Chinatown. The staff -- in particular, the front desk clerk -- was excellent. She went out of her way (e.g., printing boarding passes, providing detailed directions). Parking is free, which is worth $25 a day if you have a car. They also offered some free breakfast items (fruit, breakfast bars, coffee). For the money, this place is well worth it. No complaints. My wife and 2 kids (ages 9 and 7) were happy with it.

Nice location

Jacalyn, Orlando, FL, 2006-06-03

Try walking around to find the local restaurants. You miss alot if you never get out of your car.

The Castle Inn was located in an interesting area of San Francisco. Within easy walking distance of some great coffee shops and restaurants. The staff was very helpful about things to do and places to go. The room was okay - not at all luxurious but adequate and clean. Parking was very tight but free which was not true for most hotels we looked at in the city.
