During your San Francisco vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Ferry Building Marketplace (and Farmers' Market)
There's no better way to enjoy a San Francisco morning than strolling this gourmet marketplace in the newly renovated Ferry Building and snacking your way through breakfast or lunch. Tasty tenants, open daily, include many of the best of Northern California's gourmet bounty: Cowgirl Creamery's Artisan Cheese Shop, Recchiuti Confections (amazing!), Scharffen Berger Chocolate, Acme breads, Wine Country's gourmet diner Taylor's Refresher, famed Vietnamese restaurant The Slanted Door, and myriad other restaurants, eateries, and wine bars.An added bonus and San Francisco favorite is the Farmers' Market, which is open alfresco on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 2pm. Drop by to peruse stands hawking the finest Northern California fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy, flowers, and readymade snacks by a few local restaurants. You can also pick up locally made vinegars and oils -- they make wonderful gifts. Drop in on Sunday from 8am to 2pm for the gardener's market, which focuses on plants but also has a bit of produce. Even when the market's closed, the glistening Ferry Building is now a worthy stop thanks to its new restaurants and shops.
Grace Cathedral
Although this Nob Hill cathedral, designed by architect Lewis P. Hobart, appears to be made of stone, it is in fact constructed of reinforced concrete, beaten to achieve a stonelike effect. Construction began on the site of the Crocker mansion in 1928 but was not completed until 1964. Among the more interesting features of the building are its stained-glass windows, particularly those by the French Loire studios and Charles Counick, depicting such modern figures as Thurgood Marshall, Robert Frost, and Albert Einstein; the replicas of Ghiberti's bronze Doors of Paradise at the east end; the series of religious murals completed in the 1940s by Polish artist John de Rosen; and the 44-bell carillon. Along with its magical ambience, Grace lifts spirits with services, musical performances, and its weekly Forum (Sun 9:30-10:30am except summer and major holidays), where guests lead discussions about spirituality in modern times.
Mission Dolores
San Francisco's oldest standing structure, the Mission San Francisco de Assisi (aka Mission Dolores), has withstood the test of time, as well as two major earthquakes, relatively intact. In 1776, at the behest of Franciscan missionary Junípero Serra, Father Francisco Palou came to the Bay Area to found the sixth in a series of missions that dotted the California coastline. From these humble beginnings grew what was to become the city of San Francisco. The mission's small, simple chapel, built solidly by Native Americans who were converted to Christianity, is a curious mixture of native construction methods and Spanish-colonial style. A statue of Father Serra stands in the mission garden, although the portrait looks somewhat more contemplative, and less energetic, than he must have been in real life. A 45-minute audio tour costs $5; otherwise, admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

Feels clean and classy

Make sure you know your way around San Francisco streets...watch for the one-way streets.

The Carriage Inn in San Francisco is a very nice place to stay. The rooms where decorated in a victorian style. Our room was very clean, even the bathroom. There is a spa available if you like. They brought breakfast to our room every morning, along with a newspaper. The staff was extremely friendly. I highly recommend this hotel.

Very Comfortable

Connie, 2005-09-12

Although it was a few blocks from the public transportation, it was easy to get to with their free shuttle or walking. The hotel is very clean, the rooms are spacious and elegant, and the complimentary continental breakfast is delivered to your room when you desire it, along with a morning newspaper. I would definitely stay there again next time I visit San Francisco.

Room with a view

Jeff, Atlanta, GA, 2005-07-17

While staying at the Carriage Inn in San Francisco, a brief stroll from the 7th street location allows the visitor to meet up close and personal some of San Francisco's more agressive and mentally ill homeless. In the evening, the show comes to you! If you are fortunate enough to have a room facing the alley like we did, you might get to see SPD take down a real drug suspect. My wife & I were treated to a felony arrest around midnight with exciting front row seats for the arrest just below our window. I guess the homeless residents are more used to the action...the 2 men sleeping in the alley were hardley disturbed from their stupor by all the ruckus. I would suggest staying North of Market. The "Soma" neighbrhood while colorful isn't conducive to a relaxing retreat.

This was a great place to stay. We were very impressed. The staff was great very helpful. great value

Kathleen, Seattle, WA, 2005-07-02

Even tho this location was not in the nicest areas of San Francisco they provided shuttle service to Union Square every hour. We got to the loading area just on time but the shuttle was full, so they provided us with cab fare instead of making us wait for the next shuttle. They own a group of hotels on the block so we had access to the swimming pool and business center at the hotel directly across the street from our location. Parking was free, unheard of in San Francisco. The continental breakfast was delivered to our room free which was also a bonus. The room was large and very elegant. I will stay there again...Anytime.

The Carriage Inn was a great choice-it is conveniently located to most transportation sources. They delivered the contiental breakfast at a time we picked-it could have a few more choices for breakfast. Hotel was clean, the jacuzzi was great & well maintained. It had a free shuttle bus up to Union Square & back to the hotel.

Excellent Accommodations

Anonymous, Washington, DC, 2005-05-16

This hotel is centrally located to everything. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was large and clean. Hi-speed internet is available for those who wants to bring their laptop. For others, the hotel has a business center. Best of all, breakfast is available every morning along with a daily paper.
