During your Anaheim vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Haas-Lilienthal House
Of the city's many gingerbread Victorians, this handsome Queen Anne house is one of the most flamboyant. The 1886 structure features all the architectural frills of the period, including dormer windows, flying cupolas, ornate trim, and winsome turret. The elaborately styled house is now a museum, its rooms fully furnished with period pieces. The Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage maintains the house and offers docent-led tours. The 1-hour tours (the only way to see the house) start every 20 to 30 minutes.
San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park
Shaped like an Art Deco ship, the Maritime Museum is filled with sailing, whaling, and fishing lore. Remarkably good exhibits include intricate model craft and scrimshaw. The collection of shipwreck photographs and historic marine scenes includes an 1851 snapshot of hundreds of abandoned ships, deserted en masse by crews dashing off to participate in the gold rush. Beautifully carved, brightly painted wooden figureheads from old windjammers line the walls. Two blocks east, at the park's Hyde Street Pier, are several historic ships, now moored and open to the public. The Balclutha, one of the last surviving square-riggers and the handsomest vessel in San Francisco Bay, was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1886 and carried grain from California at a near-record speed of 300 miles a day. The ship is now completely restored. Kids can climb into the bunking quarters, visit the "slop chest" ("galley" to you, matey), and read the sea chanteys (clean ones only) that decorate the walls. The 1890 Eureka still carries a cargo of nostalgia for San Franciscans. It was the last of 50 paddle-wheel ferries that regularly plied the bay; it made its final trip in 1957. Restored to its original splendor at the height of the ferryboat era, the side-wheeler is loaded with deck cargo, including antique cars and trucks. The black-hulled, three-masted C. A. Thayer, built in 1895, was crafted for the lumber trade and carried logs felled in the Pacific Northwest to the carpentry shops of California. Unfortunately, it's undergoing renovation and isn't slated to return until 2006.Other historic ships docked here include the tiny two-masted Alma, one of the last scow schooners to bring hay to the horses of San Francisco; the Hercules, a huge 1907 oceangoing steam tug; and the Eppleton Hall, a side-wheel tugboat built in England in 1914 to operate on London's River Thames. At the pier's small-boat shop, visitors can follow the restoration progress of historic boats from the museum's collection. It's behind the maritime bookstore on your right as you approach the ships.
Asian Art Museum
Reopened in its Civic Center home in March 2003, the Asian Art Museum is one of the Western world's largest museums devoted to Asian art. Its collection boasts more than 15,000 art objects, such as world-class sculptures, paintings, bronzes, ceramics, and jade items, spanning 6,000 years of history and regions of south Asia, west Asia, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, China, Korea, and Japan. Previously in Golden Gate Park, the museum's new home in the city's Beaux Arts-style central library was renovated under Italian architect Gae Aulenti and includes 40,000 square feet of gallery space showcasing 2,500 objects at any given time. Add temporary exhibitions, live demonstrations, learning activities, cafe Asia, and a store, and you've got one very good reason to head to the Civic Center.

Good Value; Good Location

John, Sacramento, CA

As a former resident of San Francisco, I had passed the Beresford many times, but never stayed there. I was in town for a convention and the location was good for my activities. The price was right, too, so I took a chance. It was a great experience. The room was spacious and, while not luxurious, comfortable and adequate to my needs. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location is ideal for anyone who needs to be downtown. I didn't try the restaurant, but there are several good restaurants nearby. For the money, it's an excellent choice and I'll stay there again.

We found a good location, close to Union Square and theatre district. The rooms are small but adequate. Good restaurant on the corner and friendly staff. We would stay there again.

wonderful hotel

Anonymous, 2007-03-13

Club One is around the corner from the hotel- require at the desk for special daily rates- considering the hotel does not have a fitness room.

My stay at the Beresford Hotel was nice and comfortable. It felt like a Bed and Breakfast with the complimentary breakfast in the morning. The neighborhood also added to my stay in San Francisco because it was a short walk to Union Square and Chinatown, with many forms of public transportation close at hand. The room itself was small but fit a desk and chairs and a mini-bar. The staff was helpful and knew the area well, which was important considering there was only one form of a city guide in the room.

great bargain

Hotel is somewhat difficult to get to for an out-of towner. A small map of how to get to it will be helpfull. Staff wasn't enthusiastic, perhaps for a 'long' working condition. Hotel sorrounding was best. Many cafe and bistro. Many attraction to see on the way to Chinatown. The street was clean. There was not any 'pan-handler' on the street. Many street musicians, which I don't mind to share some of my Dollars to them 'cos they play good tunes. Parking is very challenging. Perhaps a 'mass-transport' guide will be needed.

in the heart of downtown san francisco

Anonymous, New York, NY, 2007-02-19

The Beresford Hotel was very close to pretty much everything in downtown San Francisco, so that we could get around via trolley, bus, and foot. It wasn't in a very busy spot of the city, so it wasn't too hectic or loud (about 2-3 blocks in from the main street). However, during the first two nights there was a lot of noise coming from outside due to late night revelers, which made it hard to fall asleep. We also went during a busy touristy season, so that probably contributed to it. The room was also very small, but for our weekend stay, it was fine. We also enjoyed (as many other reviewers have) the free continental breakfast they served at the hotel. The hotel was also close to a lot of restaurants and places to eat so that was also a convenience.

Worthwhile for the Union Square location

Robert, 2006-12-14

When I come to town it is for a conference or convention, and I need basic comfort, cleanliness and modest price. The Beresford is an easy 8 minute walk to the Moscone center and 3 minutes to Union Square. The room had been comfortably upgraded from some earlier incarnation in this older building. There is little to complain about except for the lack of wireless internet service. This is now the standard, and for a small hotel, inexpensive to install.

Comfortable Stay

Close to Union Square, China Town

By gone is the small city hotel. I am sure other large hotels have all the facilities for the demanding. I felt very relaxed in this hotel. Location is great and beds very comfortable. This hotel is older but well maintained.

Clean, convenient but basic

Anonymous, 2006-08-20

From the hotel it's a few blocks to Union Square and the Nordstrom's Shopping Center. You can easily walk to Yerba Buena Gardens, to Grant Street and more shopping. Wear comfortable shoes to walk to the financial district, to China Town and North Beach, as well as the Embarcadero.

This property is clean and conveniently located. The amenities are basic - don't expect fancy furniture. They do have a nice continental breakfast. If your needs are simple - and your focus is on the convenience of the location (within a block or two of Union Square) as well as affordability, this is a good hotel to stay at. My only complaint is that the room was very cold and the heater did not work. Would be great if they worked on this.

My review of Beresford Hotel

Abraham, Philadelphia, PA, 2006-06-28

A definite plus was we bought a 7-day pass for public transportation which saved us a lot of money, it was used for the cable cars, buses and even the subway.

The Beresford Hotel in San Fran was small, but just right for our honeymoon, there was a leak in the shower ceiling and we did let the front desk know, but they didn't do anything about it. The contintental breakfast was just right. We were very close to everything which made it easier for us because we didn't know our way around.
