During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Giant Dipper Roller Coaster
A local landmark for almost 80 years, the Giant Dipper is one of two surviving fixtures from the original Belmont Amusement Park (the other is The Plunge swimming pool). After sitting dormant for 15 years, the vintage wooden roller coaster, with more than 2,600 feet of track and 13 hills, underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 1991. If you're in the neighborhood (especially with older kids), it's worth a stop, but adults may find the whole experience a bit too spine-rattling. You must be at least 50 inches tall to ride the roller coaster. You can also ride on the Giant Dipper's neighbor, the Liberty Carousel ($2), and other carny-style rides (unlimited ride wristband $17).
The Gondola Company
This unique business operates from Loews Coronado Bay Resort, plying the calm waters between pleasure-boat docks in gondolas crafted according to centuries-old designs from Venice. It features all the trimmings, right down to the striped-shirt-clad gondolier with ribbons waving from his or her straw hat. Mediterranean music plays while you and up to five friends recline with snuggly blankets, and the company will even provide antipasto appetizers (or chocolate-dipped strawberries) and chilled wineglasses and ice for the beverage of your choice (BYOB).
Mount Woodson Golf Club
One of San Diego County's most dramatic golf courses, Mount Woodson is a par-70, 6,180-yard course on 150 beautiful acres. The award-winning 18-hole course, which opened in 1991, meanders up and down hills, across bridges, and around granite boulders. Elevated tees provide striking views of Ramona and Mount Palomar, and on a clear day you can see for almost 100 miles. It's easy to combine a game of golf with a weekend getaway to Julian (see chapter 11). Greens fees for 18 holes (including mandatory cart) are $65 Monday through Thursday, $85 Friday and Sunday, $90 on Saturday. Early-bird, afternoon, and twilight rates are available, and seniors get a discount. Mount Woodson is about 40 minutes north of San Diego.

Great location at the harbor

walter, 2006-10-28

the seafood place just behind is great!

The hotel is in walking distance of the harbor with good seafood restaurants, sport fishing charters, and etc. Staff was nice. Rooms had every thing you need frigid, coffee, iron. Only complaint is the rooms smelled really musty. It was a real bummer especially when you first walk in.

NIce people nice location

Robin, 2006-07-01

Humprey's By the Bay, which has some outstanding summer concerts is walking distance, also the harbor where there are day fishing trips, is right next door!

This Vagabond Inn was perfect for the mini vacation I had planned! Close to Humphrey's By The Bay, where the concert I was planning to attend was. Overlooking the harbor, sort of, and close to a VERY tasty seafood shack, it met all my needs. The desk staff at both check-in and check out were VERY NICE ( give those ladies a raise!) and I was delighted to find excellent coffee both in the room and in the lobby, along with muffins, fruit and juice for breakfast. The pool was clean and well kept. The room was clean and well stocked. The microwave and fridge were a bonus. I would stay there again.

This hotels location to the major offshore fishing fleet is great. They understood the requirements of folks going on trips on the San Diego fleet.

My review of Vagabond Inn San Diego Point Loma

Anonymous, Denver, CO, 2005-06-07

Vagabond Inn San Diego Point Loma was very comfortable. There was adequate space for hanging clothes, however two suitcase stands would have been nice. The location was okay as long as we had the rental car. There were restaurants very close. The reception desk was helpful with questions we had. They seemed to keep things in good repair. I would definitely stay there again--the price was good and the location was good.

Dark and smelly

Nicholas, New York, NY, 2005-06-05

The room was really smelly and very dark, cavern-like.
