During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Diego Automotive Museum
Even if you don't know a distributor from a dipstick, you're bound to ooh-and-aah over the classic, antique, and exotic cars here. Every one is so pristine you'd swear it just rolled off the line, from an 1886 Benz to a 1931 Rolls-Royce Phaeton to the 1981 DeLorean. Most of the time, temporary shows take over the facility, so check ahead to see if it's one you're interested in. Some days you can take a peek at the ongoing restoration program, and the museum sponsors many outdoor car rallies and other events. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for your visit.
Museum of Photographic Arts
If names like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston stimulate your fingers to do the shutterbug, then don't miss a taste of the 7,000-plus collection of images housed by this museum -- one of few in the United States devoted exclusively to the photographic arts (which, at MOPA, encompasses cinema, video, and digital photography). A 1999 expansion allowed the museum to display even more of the permanent collection, while leaving room for provocative traveling exhibits that change every few months. Photos by Alfred Stieglitz, Margaret Bourke-White, Imogen Cunningham, Paul Strand, and Manuel Alvarez Bravo are all in the permanent collection, and the plush cinema illuminates classic films Friday, Saturday, and some weeknights. Allow 30 to 60 minutes to see the collection.
Stuart Collection
Consider the Stuart Collection a work in progress on a large scale. Through a 1982 agreement between the Stuart Foundation and UCSD, the still-growing collection consists of site-related sculptures by leading contemporary artists. Start by picking up a map from the information booth, and wend your way through the 1,200-acre campus to discover the 15 highly diverse artworks. Among them is Niki de Saint Phalle's Sun God, a jubilant 14-foot-high fiberglass bird on a 15-foot concrete base. Nicknamed "Big Bird," it's been made an unofficial mascot by the students, who use it as the centerpiece of their annual celebration, the Sun God Festival. Also in the collection are Alexis Smith's Snake Path, a 560-foot-long slate-tile pathway that winds up the hill from the Engineering Mall to the east terrace of the spectacular Geisel Library (breathtaking architecture that's a fabulous sculpture itself); and Terry Allen's Trees, three eucalyptus trees encased in lead. One tree emits songs, and another poems and stories, while the third stands silent in a grove of trees the students call "The Enchanted Forest." Allow at least 2 hours to tour the entire collection.

GREAT VALUE

alan, Pittsburgh, PA

Hop on the trolley up the road a block and it will take you to shop, dine, and for entertainment.

If you are looking for a hotel that is aggo value and no frills, this is the hotel for you. It wasn't fancy, but it did the trick. It was very clean and the staff were very helpful(because we were not familiar)with directions and spots to visit. It was a normal size hotel room that was just right for us. It is right beside the trolley station which really was beneficial to us.

Brisk walk to P.F. Changs and The Cheesecake Factory

The hotel was clean and it was a great location. Right down the street from mission/fashion valley. I wish more small hotels had this value.

Very Good Super 8

bernadette, Minneapolis, MN, 2006-09-25

We went to Old Town, Seaport Village, toured the Midway aircraft carrier, took the tram to the Mexico border but didn't go into Mexico. We shopped downtown and ate at Buca diBeppo - was very good.

This Super 8 was close to family members living in San Diego. My husband and I and my brother-in-law and sister-in-law had rooms there, and we were very satisfied with everything. We do think they could have a toaster and cold cereal for breakfast in addition to the fruit and rolls as other Super 8's we've stayed at have. The front desk employees were very courteous and helpful. I liked the separate vanity area so I could be at that sink when my husband was using bathroom and shower. We sat outside by the pool but never did have time to swim. We rented a car and spent much time and many meals with San Diego family members so breakfast and after 10 p.m. were the only times we actually spent at the Super 8. All was good.

Breakfast

Martin, 2006-08-07

Old Town San Diego was a short drive from the hotel.

The superstart Breakfast consisted of coffee Juice and a donut. There was only one chair in the room for reading. The room was clean and the bathroom was very clean and the shower was very nice.

O.K. Bargain

Anonymous, El Paso, TX, 2006-06-28

The is right next to the trolley station, which makes it very convenient.

I was pleased with the location, cleanliness and comfort in relation to the discount price. I was especially happy with the proximity to the trolley station and trolley that takes you directly to the historic "Old Town." Since I was alone, I was not happy that when I arrived, the lobby was closed and I had to check in from a window outside and find my way to my room with my bags alone in the dark. If they can't keep the lobby open at night, at least they could have someone help you to your room. I am a woman with health concerns and I should have had some help. The Continental Breakfast could have been better.
