During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Giant Dipper Roller Coaster
A local landmark for almost 80 years, the Giant Dipper is one of two surviving fixtures from the original Belmont Amusement Park (the other is The Plunge swimming pool). After sitting dormant for 15 years, the vintage wooden roller coaster, with more than 2,600 feet of track and 13 hills, underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 1991. If you're in the neighborhood (especially with older kids), it's worth a stop, but adults may find the whole experience a bit too spine-rattling. You must be at least 50 inches tall to ride the roller coaster. You can also ride on the Giant Dipper's neighbor, the Liberty Carousel ($2), and other carny-style rides (unlimited ride wristband $17).
San Diego Museum of Art
With one of the grandest entrances along El Prado -- the rotunda at the head of dramatic stairs features striking Spanish tile work -- the museum is known in the art world for its outstanding collection of Spanish baroque painting, and possibly the largest collection of Indian paintings outside India. The American collection includes works by Georgia O'Keeffe and Thomas Eakins, and San Diegans like Maurice Braun and Dan Dickey are represented. Over 12,000 pieces are part of the permanent collection, only a small percentage of which is on display at any given time, in favor of varied, often prestigious touring shows. In 2005, Maxfield Parrish -- Master of Make Believe should be a big hit, featuring 70 fanciful works by the early 20th-century artist (the show runs July 16-September 11).Docent tours are scheduled at 1pm daily, and 2pm Friday and Sunday, and at 11am other days. Plan to spend at least an hour here.
Japanese Friendship Garden
Of the 11 1/2 acres designated for the garden, only 1 acre -- a beautiful, peaceful one -- has been developed. The garden's Information Center shows a model of the future installation, San-Kei-En (Three-Scenery Garden). A self-guided tour is available at the main gate. From the gate, a crooked path (to confound evil spirits, who move only in a straight line) threads its way to the information center in a Zen-style house; here you can view the most ancient kind of garden, the sekitei, made only of sand and stone. Refreshments are served on a Japanese-style deck to the left of the entrance. Japanese holidays are celebrated here, and the public is invited.

Our Stopover Spot

We enjoyed an inexpensive meal at a small cafe on the fishing docks.

The Ramada Limited in San Diego was a little further away from the Cruise Ship docks than we realized it would be, although we enjoyed the walk around the fishing vessel docks. It was very comfortable and the staff very helpful. They explained the possibility of the city Trolley ride and arranged for our pick up for that, as well as our morning taxi to the Cruise Vessel.

Very helpful staff

Anonymous, Chicago, IL

There is such great food nearby open 24-7. You must go to Santana's, a 24 hour drive-in/walk-up which serves amazing Mexican food. Try the cheese enchiladas! Also, the donut shop kitty-corner to Santana's was really good.

This is a very comfortable hotel. Don't let the "Limited" in its title fool you! We chose this hotel for its airport shuttle and location, but we were delighted by how comfortable the room was in addition. The staff was friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had all the information we needed, and I was so pleased. We had their continental breakfast every morning, and the food was consistently delicious and got us on a good start for the morning, along with saving us money. The hotel is steps from the harbor, nice restaurants and nice & cheap restaurants, and a good locale. Drive West for beautiful views along Ocean Beach. I highly recommend the city, the food, and the hotel and their staff. Best asset was their staff.

Clean hotel for a good night's rest

Anonymous, Guadalajara

Outstanding informal seafood restaurant at the marina, next to the hotel

The service was efficient and unpretentious. Accommodations, room, was clean and furnished with all the amenities. The, free, and wire less internet service from within the guest room is very much appreciated. The continental breakfast, included with the room rate, was rather simple and plain. The, free, airport shuttle service with a comfortable Mercedes Benz van was very much appreciated as well. For the rate charged, the hotel offers a good nights rest.

close to the airport

there were some seafood places to eat across the street.

The people at the front desk were very helpful. We chose the hotel because they provided transportation to the airport. They made a special unscheduled shuttle trip for us so we couldn't have to leave so early in the morning.

Across from Fisherman Paradise

Marinas across the street. Great for watching the charter boats arrive with their catches

The Ramada Limited Hotel was nice. Rooms are clean, bed was comfortable. Recommend a second or third floor room with a balcony. Across street from Restaurants and Marinas. Room air conditioner is very loud but cools room well.

Great Bay location

Anonymous, Denver, CO, 2006-06-10

A lot of dining choices within walking distance.

The Ramada had a very friendly staff. The hotel was well kept. Our hotel room was a nice size single room with a little extra room to move then others hotels I've stayed in. I liked having the fridge and mirco in my room. This hotel had a bar & lounge that was on the third floor. It has a deck that you can sit out on and view the San Diego Bay.

Great Location

Anonymous, 2006-05-14

There is a Jamba Juice a short drive away as well as a TJ Maxx.

When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised that it was so clean, airy, and accommodating. The staff was very considerate, helpful and generous wih their time. I'm aware of the hazardous site (toxic) problems by the signs posted but the hotel does a good job of keeping the air circulating and fresh. The night of the 12th, there was a power outage from county repairs... A lantern was found at the front desk which I borrowed to get around in my room early in the morning...to shower, dress, etc. The staff apologized for the inconvenience. With a recent broken foot, I felt I needed the extra light to assure getting around safely. The hotel location was primary...and was indeed close to Point Loma Nazarene University. One small problem...finding a place that sold bottled water...like a grocery store and no notification of the power outage going to occur. It was a complete surprise and a bit confusing... Bottom line... I would return to this hotel if I had an occasion to do so.

Okay

TAMMIE, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-02-12

The hotel is just a mile from Humphrey's Half Moon Inn, with great entertainment and concerts.

The hotel was conveniently located. The room was clean. Noise was an issue due to a corridor door which was broken. Overall feeling of safety was less than I would have preferred with the the broken door also. The bathtub in the bathroom was not working properly, but the staff repaired it promptly.
