During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Birch Aquarium at Scripps
This beautiful facility is both an aquarium and a museum, operated as the interpretive arm of the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography. To make the most of the experience, be sure to pick up a visitor guide from the information booth just inside the entrance, and take time to read the text on each of the exhibits. The aquarium affords close-up views of the Pacific Northwest, the California coast, Mexico's Sea of Cortez, and the tropical seas, all presented in more than 60 marine-life tanks. The giant kelp forest is particularly impressive. Exotic highlights include the fanciful white anemones and the ethereal moon jellies, which look like elegant parachutes. The sea horse propagation program here has met with excellent results -- nine different species of sea horse are on display in one of the aquarium's best exhibits. The outdoor demonstration tide pool not only shows visitors marine coastal life but also offers an amazing view of Scripps Pier, La Jolla Shores Beach, the village of La Jolla, and the ocean. Free tide-pool talks are offered on weekends, which is also when the aquarium is most crowded, and off-site adventures are conducted year-round (call for more details). The museum section has numerous interpretive exhibits on current and historic research at the Scripps Institution, which was established in 1903 and became part of the University of California system in 1912. You'll learn what fog is and why salt melts snow; the number of supermarket products with ingredients that come from the sea (including toothpaste and ice cream) might surprise you; and you can feel what an earthquake is like and experience a simulator ride, Morphis. The bookstore is well stocked with textbooks, science books, educational toys, gifts, and T-shirts.
Timken Museum of Art
How many art museums invite you to see great works of art, free of charge? How many of them have smiling guards who welcome guests as graciously as the Timken's? This jewel-like repository houses the Putnam Foundation's collection of 19th-century American paintings and works by European old masters, as well as a worthy display of Russian icons. Yes, it's a small collection, but the marquee attractions include a Peter Paul Rubens, Portrait of a Young Man in Armor; San Diego's only Rembrandt, St. Bartholomew; and a masterpiece by Eastman Johnson, The Cranberry Harvest. You'll find a spot apiece for works by Bierstadt, Pissaro, Corot, and Cézanne. Since you can tour all of the museum in well under an hour, the Timken also makes for an easy introduction to fine art for younger travelers (pick up a copy of the Children's Gallery Guide for $2). Docents are available Tuesday from 10am to noon and 1 to 3pm; Wednesday and Thursday from 10 to noon; or by appointment.
Cabrillo National Monument
Breathtaking views mingle with the early history of San Diego, which began when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo arrived in 1542. His statue dominates the tip of Point Loma, 422 feet above sea level, which is also a vantage point for watching migrating Pacific gray whales en route from the Arctic Ocean to Baja California December through March. A self-guided tour of the restored lighthouse (1855) illuminates what life was like here more than a century ago (fog and low clouds made the lighthouse ineffective so another was built close to the water in 1891). National Park Service rangers lead walks at the monument, and there are tide pools to explore at the base of the peninsula. On the other side of the point is the Bayside Trail, a 3.2-mile round-trip down to a lookout over the bay. Free 30-minute videos and slide shows on Cabrillo, tide pools, and the whales are shown on the hour daily from 10am to 4pm. Note the view from the visitor center to the left (north); the blocky structure on the water is the navy's nuclear submarine base. The drive from downtown takes about a half-hour.

I got what I paid for

Joes crab shack was a short walk away along with other restaurants.

I would definately stay at this hotel again. The only thing that I was not happy about was the inability to smoke anywhere on hotel property. But I do understand why the hotel has that rule. Other than that I was completely satisfied.

great location

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2007-03-12

beach right in front of the hotel...sea world is only 3.5 miles away.

if you're looking for a great location, ocean park inn would be great. you don't have to cross the street to get to the beach..it's right in front of the hotel. when we first arrived at the hotel , we just didn't like the fact that we couldn't park at the parking structure right away because it was gated. we had to check in first and get our keys to the room. it was hard to find parking. the staff, however, were very friendly and pleasant. our room was small but we liked our partial ocean view room..bed was comfortable. we didn't like the fact that we couldn't order room service because the hotel doesn't have a restaurant. thank God for dominos pizza. we thought the hotel itself needs renovation. paints were chipping off, carpets look old. swimming pool was just okay. but we thought it was too expensive when we were actually there because the only thing good about it was the location. other than that it was just like an old motel.

My review of Ocean Park Inn

The location of this hotel was excellent; the front desk staff friendly and helpful, but the room was not cleaned well--dirty kleenex still under the bed and used coffee pouch from previous tenant was still in coffee pot.

Great location

Kimberly, 2006-11-06

The Ocean Park Inn is in a great location. You are minutes away from many different types of restaurants ranging from fast food to a nice relaxing dinner with a view of the ocean. Also, the hotel rooms include a fridge and a microwave. You can walk about four of five blocks to a Ralphs grocery store and stock up on sodas and snacks. The bus stop is right around the corner from the hotel. The bus will take you to SeaWorld or Old Town for $1.75 each way. The hotel is tucked off the main street so you dont hear any traffic noise. You can walk from your room to the beach in about 3 minutes. It is more of a relaxing; kick-up your feet type hotel. Its not real fancy with a lot of suits running around. Mostly people in shorts, tank tops, and sandals. I would definitely recommend this hotel to someone who wants to relax and let his/her hair down.

Great deal for on the beach

Anonymous, 2006-09-01

There is a great Mexican restaurant with the best Margaritas that I have ever had. Across the street from that is an Italian restaurant. There are some fast food restaurants very close.

Ocean Park Inn was a well-kept secret. It is hard to find an ocean front hotel that is affordable in the San Diego area. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The room we had was ocean front and had a balcony where we could go out and people watch. It is right on the boardwalk. The rooms are a decent size and have the basics. The next time that we visit we want to get a large suite so that we can take the entire family. Good restaurants, grocery store, drug store, shopping are all within walking distance. The hotel has underground and secured parking which is also sometimes hard to find and usually more expensive. I know that we will be staying in this hotel for many years to come.

Beautiful Ocean View

Jimmy, Tucson, AZ, 2005-08-21

Green Flash, Joes Crab Shack are close, both very good.

This hotel is located directly off the beach, with a gorgeous ocean view from just about every room. It is a great thing to step out of your hotel and walk to the beach in a couple minutes. Some downsides to being so close to the beach are being close to the boardwalk, which can be very noisy. The outside of the hotel is very beautiful, but the rooms are not as impressive. They are pretty basic, but have enough space so its all good. The parking is really good, for $7 a day and always availiable, it is a big upside. The hotel itself is in a fairly good spot in San Diego, it is about 15 minutes to downtown and the zoo, and probably 10 to Sea World. Be sure to avoid rush hour though, it can get insane on Grand Avenue. The biggest downside for us was that the staff wasn't very helpful, but it is easy to look past that with the great value for your money this hotel offers.
