During your El Cajon vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Cabrillo National Monument
Breathtaking views mingle with the early history of San Diego, which began when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo arrived in 1542. His statue dominates the tip of Point Loma, 422 feet above sea level, which is also a vantage point for watching migrating Pacific gray whales en route from the Arctic Ocean to Baja California December through March. A self-guided tour of the restored lighthouse (1855) illuminates what life was like here more than a century ago (fog and low clouds made the lighthouse ineffective so another was built close to the water in 1891). National Park Service rangers lead walks at the monument, and there are tide pools to explore at the base of the peninsula. On the other side of the point is the Bayside Trail, a 3.2-mile round-trip down to a lookout over the bay. Free 30-minute videos and slide shows on Cabrillo, tide pools, and the whales are shown on the hour daily from 10am to 4pm. Note the view from the visitor center to the left (north); the blocky structure on the water is the navy's nuclear submarine base. The drive from downtown takes about a half-hour.
Mingei International Museum
This captivating museum (pronounced "min-gay," meaning "art of the people" in Japanese), offers changing exhibitions generally describable as folk art. The rotating exhibits -- usually four at a time -- feature artists from countries across the globe; displays include textiles, costumes, jewelry, toys, pottery, paintings, and sculpture. The permanent collection includes whimsical contemporary sculptures by the late French artist Niki de Saint Phalle, who made San Diego her home in 1993. Martha Longenecker, a potter and professor emeritus of art at San Diego State University, founded the museum in 1977. It is one of only two major museums in the United States devoted to folk crafts on a worldwide scale (the other is in Santa Fe, New Mexico) and well worth a look. Allow half an hour to an hour to view the exhibits. A large new Escondido branch has additional exhibits.
Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala
Established in 1769 above Old Town, this was the first link in a chain of 21 missions founded by Spanish missionary Junípero Serra. In 1774, the mission was moved from Old Town to its present site for agricultural reasons, and to separate Native American converts from the fortress that included the original building. The mission was burned by Native Americans a year after it was built -- Father Serra rebuilt the structure using 5- to 7-foot-thick adobe walls and clay tile roofs, rendering it harder to burn. In the process he inspired a bevy of 20th-century California architects. A few bricks belonging to the original mission can be seen in Presidio Park in Old Town. Mass is said daily in this active Catholic parish. Other missions in San Diego County include Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside, Mission San Antonia de Pala near Mount Palomar, and Mission Santa Ysabel near Julian. Known as "the King of Missions," the San Luis Rey is the largest of California's missions and one of its most beautiful.

Very nice

David, San Diego, CA, 2006-12-08

Shopping and Dining experiences abound within a few blocks. Waterfront is close, so is Petco park.

We got the room with the hottub and it made the stay much nicer. The rooms were very large which makes things very comfortable. The hotel isn't cheap, but at least you feel like they're giving you your money's worth. Pretty much anything you need can be gotten very quickly. Free wireless is nice. Valet isn't cheap ($26/night). Wife loved it, so I might splurge again!

Wonderful hotel

Vanessa, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-07-23

Mister Tiki on 5th has the best mai tais and food in town. It's a fun atmosphere and perfect for groups. Also, Rockin' Baja Lobster Tacos has the best seafood tacos this side of the border. Both restaurants are great options if you're looking for a very reasonably priced dining experience.

I would highly recommend this hotel. It's location is perfect because it's right in the gaslamp, adjacent to Petco Park and the Convention Center. The staff has been great both times that I've stayed there and the price was resonable for such an elegant hotel. The rooms feature a flat screen tv, free wifi, and beautiful decor. There's a complimentary wine hour in the lobby daily. The hotel restaurant is excellent, although a bit pricey. The hotel bar, by the gorgeous pool, is a hotspot in San Diego. It' has a nice firepit with views of the city. You'll find tons of locals as well as visitors lounging every night of the week. During the weekends, the pool is open to the public. I've stayed in many hotels and I would rate this one a 9 out of 10. It's only been open for 2 years, so I'm sure the prices will go up after more people find out about this gem!

Very Comfortable Hotel

Thomas, Madison, WI, 2005-08-11

Just Enjoy

The rooms are as quiet as any hotel we've stayed at. No outside noise, inspite of being a block away from a major league ball park. Minimal inside noise from doors closing. Nice size rooms although we've stayed in larger. However, in San Diego you don't spend a lot of time in the hotel room. Excellent bed. Sink in bathroom is very stylish, but not particularly functional. High quality TV. Very useful high speed internet. Only drawback to room is drawer space. There was only one drawer. This made living out of a suitcase partially necessary. We did not eat in the hotel dining room, traveling out to other interesting restaurants of which there are many in the area. I did not use the fitness room, preferring to jog outside. Very accomodating staff.

Hotel Solamar is perfect!

Kristianne, Sacramento, CA, 2005-07-18

Our week-long stay at the Hotel Solamar was wonderful! The hotels decor, from the lobby and restaurant to the individual rooms was pleasantly eclectic. The bed was extremly comfortable and we were happy to find computers and free internet at our disposal in the business center. The hotel staff were helpful to all our needs. The location is perfect -- just blocks from the Convention Center and surrounded by the downtown gaslamp district, teeming with restaurants and shops of every caliber. The only thing we found lacking was a shuttle transport from the airport to the hotel but considering the hotel's relatively newness, I imagine this won't be a permanent problem. We would definitely stay at the Hotel Solamar again!

Brand New Hotel Steals The Show

Brad, San Diego, CA, 2005-05-01

The Hotel Solamar is one of the newest and finest hotels in the Gaslamp of district of beautiful San Diego. It's close proximity to blocks of restaurants and bars, coupled with it's view of the less than two year old Petco Park make the hotel's location perfect for anyone visiting San Diego or just looking to get away for the evening. The hotel's decor and staff are immaculate and my girlfriend and I couldn't have asked for a better evening. We woke up relaxed and comfortable and were not left asking for anything from the staff, nor needing anything. The free wine happy hour in the lobby was fantastic. The pool and the staff were both hospitable and enjoyable. The view from the fourth floor pool made our evening after the ball game and was an excellent place for coffee in the morning. The hotel's restaurant staff went out of their way to meet our needs for dessert after the game. They detailed each dessert and even allowed us to take it to our room for a more private and intimate setting. If given a choice or asked for a recommendation Hotel Solamar would be the first hotel I would think of.
