During your El Cajon vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Giant Dipper Roller Coaster
A local landmark for almost 80 years, the Giant Dipper is one of two surviving fixtures from the original Belmont Amusement Park (the other is The Plunge swimming pool). After sitting dormant for 15 years, the vintage wooden roller coaster, with more than 2,600 feet of track and 13 hills, underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 1991. If you're in the neighborhood (especially with older kids), it's worth a stop, but adults may find the whole experience a bit too spine-rattling. You must be at least 50 inches tall to ride the roller coaster. You can also ride on the Giant Dipper's neighbor, the Liberty Carousel ($2), and other carny-style rides (unlimited ride wristband $17).
Mount Woodson Golf Club
One of San Diego County's most dramatic golf courses, Mount Woodson is a par-70, 6,180-yard course on 150 beautiful acres. The award-winning 18-hole course, which opened in 1991, meanders up and down hills, across bridges, and around granite boulders. Elevated tees provide striking views of Ramona and Mount Palomar, and on a clear day you can see for almost 100 miles. It's easy to combine a game of golf with a weekend getaway to Julian (see chapter 11). Greens fees for 18 holes (including mandatory cart) are $65 Monday through Thursday, $85 Friday and Sunday, $90 on Saturday. Early-bird, afternoon, and twilight rates are available, and seniors get a discount. Mount Woodson is about 40 minutes north of San Diego.
Torrey Pines State Reserve
The rare Torrey pine tree grows in only two places in the world: Santa Rosa Island, 175 miles northwest of San Diego, and here, at the north end of La Jolla. Even if the twisted shape of these awkwardly beautiful trees doesn't lure you to this spot, the equally scarce undeveloped coastal scenery should. The city first donated 369 acres as a public park, and the 1,750-acre reserve was established in 1921, from a gift by Ellen Browning Scripps. The reserve encompasses the beach below, as well as a lagoon immediately north, but the focus is the 300-foot-high, water-carved limestone bluffs, which provide a precarious footing for the trees. In spring, the wildflower show includes bush poppies, Cleveland sage, agave, and yucca. A half-dozen trails (all under 1 1/2 miles in length) travel from the road to the cliff edge or down to the beach, and there's a small visitor center, built in the traditional adobe style of the Hopi Indians and featuring a lovely 12-minute video about the park. Watch for migrating gray whales in winter, or dolphins who patrol these shores year-round. For a taste of what Southern California's coast looked like a couple hundred years ago, this delicate spot is one of San Diego's unique treasures. Note: There are no facilities for food or drinks inside the park -- bring a picnic lunch.

a good place to stay with the limited budget

prabhakar, Brownsville, TX, 2007-02-17

waling to the bay and also downtown is very pleasant and safe Ralph's has very appealing food for take out at a very reasonble price a family on budget may consider this option i am total vegeterian but the food looked very appealing by site only

i think considering the downtown location and a last minute reservation this motel was o. k . to stay. the staff was not very helpful atall and even you ask for putting 2 disposable plastic cups instead of one you may have to call or talk to the housekeeping sup getting towels or plastic disposable cup at late evening is a two hour wait and 2-3 calls to the front desk cleanliness is a very positive point the rooms very thoroughly cleaned and the hallway trash cans would get emptied before they get cleaned the bathrooms were very clean and tidy i would prefer to get in this place if i want to stay there at 11th hour trip and the rooms were always available despite of a busy convention/meeting but if i go to san diego for the second time with a lots of time in my hand i would certainly shop internet

Inexpensive but at a price

David, Houston, TX, 2006-08-08

While the hotel is inexpensive compared to other hotels in the area, it does come at a price. No air conditioning and rather thin walls. There is a fair amount of street noise at night which makes sleep difficult, as the room is stuffy unless the window is open, which, of course, only increases the noise level. The walls do not keep out the noise from rooms on either side. I had to rap on the wall at 2:15 AM to get a TV turned down. I ended up borrowing a fan from a friend to give enough "white noise" to be able to sleep. Having said this, if budget constraints are a high priority, it is significantly less than other hotels. But I will not stay there again, as it is nice to be able to sleep, not simply to save money.

Budget Accomodations in San Diego

Howard, Detroit, MI, 2006-04-04

The cafe in the hotel is a good place for breakfast.

The 500 West Broadway Hotel in San Diego is conveniently located within easy walking distance of the Amtrak Train station, Convention Center and Gaslamp district in which are located many fine but more expensive restaurants. The rooms are barebones bed, desk, TV with communal style bathrooms that have privacy locks. The cabfare from the hotel to the airport was $8.80. For fitness, there is a YMCA located within the building. This is a good choice for a budget hotel in San Diego.

Converted YMCA

Anonymous, 2006-02-19

This hotel is in the heart of downtown San Diego. There are many other, more accomodating hotels within blocks of this one.

When I arrived in San Diego and told my cab driver the address of my hotel, he asked me why I was staying at the YMCA. When I replied that I was staying at the 500 West Hotel, he chuckled and informed me that it was a YMCA not long ago. If this hotel had been converted from a YMCA, they didn't do a very thorough job. The elevators were shabby at best, and though the inspection certifications were visibly displayed, they had long since expired. The hallway carpets were stained so severly in some places that it looked as if someone may have been murdered there. Upon opening the door to my room, I found a futon with no bed linens and a poorly lit room that was slightly larger than a cubicle. Furthermore, there was no bathroom! Upon further inspection of the accomodations, I discovered that this hotel had community bathrooms in the hallways. Upon taking-in this situation, I turned off the light in my room, proceeded back down to the lobby with my luggage and checked out immediately.
