During your Sacramento vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Sutter's Fort State Historic Park
John Sutter established this outpost in 1839, and the park, restored to its 1846 appearance, aims to recapture the spirit of 19th-century California. Exhibits include a blacksmith's forge, cooperage, bakery, and jail -- and a self-guided audio tour is available. Demonstrations and reenactments in costume are staged daily Memorial Day to Labor Day, when admissions are bumped to $4 for adults and $1 for children 6 to 16.
Crocker Art Museum
This museum houses an outstanding collection of California art, as well as changing exhibits from around the world. It's in an imposing century-old Italianate building, with an ornate interior of carved and inlaid woods. The Crocker Mansion Wing, the museum's most recent addition, is modeled after the Crocker family home and contains works by Northern California artists from 1945 to the present. Plan to spend about an hour here.
California State Railroad Museum
Well worth visiting, this museum is the highlight of Old Sacramento. You won't miss much if you bypass the memorabilia displays and head straight for the museum's 105 shiny locomotives and rail cars, beautiful antiques that are true works of art. Afterward, you can watch a 20-minute film on the history of the Western railroads that's quite good, then peruse related exhibits that tell the amazing story of the building of the transcontinental railroad. This museum is not just for train buffs: Over half a million people visit each year, and even the hordes of schoolchildren that typically mob this place shouldn't dissuade you from visiting one of the largest and best railroad museums in the country. Allow about 2 hours to see it all. From April to September, on weekends and holidays from 11am to 5pm, steam locomotive rides carry passengers 6 miles along the Sacramento River. Trains depart on the hour from the Central Pacific Freight Depot in Old Sacramento, at K and Front streets. Fares are $6 for adults and children ages 13 and older, $3 for children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6.

Simple little room

Anonymous

The Vagabond Midtown Sacramento was just a simple little room with no coffee pot, blow dryer, or any other such in-room amenities. The drapes hung over the heater/AC unit and would not stay shut when the unit was on. This would allow anyone walking past the room to see in. Also, I noticed the smoke detector was missing from the bracket near the entrance door and found it laying in a drawer. There was a restaurant right next door but it had been closed for some time. (I realize this is no fault of the motel) They did provide a continential breakfast which you had to go get downstairs. (I was on the 3rd floor) This was a small cup of coffee and a small sweet roll and we did return for more coffee.

Served it purpose

Anonymous, 2007-03-01

We chose this hotel because we needed to fly out of Sacramento Airport, so it was a money saver to stay nearby

The price was right and the room did exactly what it was needed to do, put us up for the night. The beds were comfortable and it had a nice TV. We got in late and left early so we didn't use any of the amenities. We didn't have to hunt for a parking space though and they were more than happy to give us extra towels. The bathroom floor tile was very, very cold though and the showerhead was aimed at my husband's chest and not his head - not the best location for anyone over 5' 7". The blowdryer was very good, put out a lot of air and got the job done quickly.

But For A View

Kenneth, 2006-12-15

This is not a facility that should be recommended to anyone. The facility is located next to an abandoned restaurant near the Rapid Transit yard. Carpeting was soiled, TV did not work and the handles were missing from the shower facilities. The staff was otherwise oblivious; heck, they only work there. ONE OF THE TACKIEST PLACES I'VE STAYED AT.

Academic Stay

I brought students to this hotel and it was fine for our stay. I was a bit concerned with the neighborhood, but everything worked out. We only stayed one night and the service was ok.
