During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Bergamot Arts Station & Santa Monica Museum of Art
One of L.A.'s primary cultural destinations is the Bergamot Arts Station. Home to the Santa Monica Museum of Art, this campuslike complex is a hugely popular destination for visitors from around the world. The location dates from 1875 when it was a stop for the Red Line trolley, and retains its industrial, rustic look. Filled with 20 galleries, the unique installations on display here range from photography and sculpture to interactive pieces that are both eclectic and cutting edge. Its central location allows visitors to park and spend the day seeing art rather than driving from one gallery to the next, and many pieces are available for purchase. A must-see for the arts lover.
NBC Studios
According to a security guard, John Wayne and Redd Foxx once got into a fight here after Wayne refused to ride in the same limo as Foxx, who called the movie star a "redneck." Well, your NBC tour will probably be a bit more docile than that. The guided 70-minute indoor tour, which departs every half-hour, includes a behind-the-scenes unstaged look at The Tonight Show with Jay Leno set; wardrobe, makeup, and set-building departments; and several sound studios. In fact, NBC is the only TV studio that offers the public a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of its television operation, and it's a lot less expensive than the competition's studio tours. It doesn't have the cachet of a major motion picture studio tour, but it's entertaining nonetheless. Note: Tours are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and sell out early during peak vacation season, so arrive early. Also, this is one of the few studio tours that doesn't have a minimum age requirement.
The Southwest Museum
This is the city's oldest museum, considered by some a "best-kept secret" that suffers from lack of recognition and space for its superlative collection. Originally opened in 1907 by amateur historian and Native American expert Charles F. Lummis (who also designed Downtown's landmark "castle," El Alisal), this privately funded anthropological museum contains the finest examples of Native American art and artifacts found anywhere, including rare paintings, weapons, and a Cheyenne summer tepee. The largest exhibition chronicles 10,000 years of history of the people of the American Southwest. The California Hall focuses on the lifestyles of the first Californians; a separate two-level hall is dedicated to the culture of cold-climate tribes. The museum has a particularly active events calendar that includes a Native American Film Festival, regular lectures, and special children's programs (log onto the website for more info). In the shop, you'll find authentic Native American drums, kachina dolls, pottery, and sterling-silver jewelry by Native American artist Vernon Begaye. Tours are available by request. Tip: You can purchase a $12 two-site ticket that also includes entry into the excellent Museum of the American West; it's valid for 3 months.

Great amenities, clean rooms, smooth check-in

Anonymous, Philadelphia, PA, 2007-02-18

Mostly all of the good clubs and bars are in Hollywood and the hotel is literally a short drive away from all the action.

The Wilshire Grand hotel is over all very comfortable. We valeted our car overnight at the hotel and they gave us a ticket for in and out access for our car. They were very quick in getting our car for us whenver we needed it. The pool was nice, but there were small children in the hot tub and pool. The free wireless internet access was a great benefit and connecting to their wireless network was seemless. The hotel is literally 1 block from the 101 freeway (takes 10-15mins to get to hollywood).

Very nice workout facility

shopping and restaurants accross the street. Two Starbucks within half a block.

My room was just OK, but the workout facility exceeded any I have experienced at other hotels.

My review of Wilshire Grand Hotel

Good Dining in Hotel especially Japanese but not open on week-end???

Good hotel with high parking fee. Stayed 6 nights without an offer to upgrade the room. Needs much better wireless internet service and more power outlets in the room. TV very small and poor quality. Bathrooms need upgrading.

Good location, accomodating staff

BARBARA, Modesto, CA, 2006-09-05

There was a coffee shop close

I stayed three nights and the first night was very bad. The water pipes from the next room sounded like the place was going to fall in, the walls were paper thin and I heard very clearly the people's conversation in the next room to the early hours. there was a dirty water bottle left from previous people, only "2" glasses. Requested a new room the same night and was told it would be changed the next day. Arrangements were made to be changed while I was out and the personal luggage etc would be in new room when I returned, however, it was not and it was 10 or 11 pm when I returned. Adjustment was to be made but four days later and I have heard nothing. Bathroom was very small. I would return but not at the price I paid.

Wouldn't spend another night

Anonymous, Philadelphia, PA, 2006-09-04

garnment & jewelry district are just a few blocks walking distance.

The Wilshire Grand left much to be desired. I frequent LA 8-10 times a year and have stayed at many lower rated hotels that offered more luxurious accommodations. I was under the impression there had been some renovations to the rooms but they were outdated and ugly. The bed was not very comfortabe and there was no fridge or coffee in the room. The walls are paper thin and you can hear what is going on in the next room. The corridors need fresh paint and new carpet but at least it didn't smell. Parking costs are excessive $30/night- and you don't find out about it til you check in. The weekend brunch buffet in the City Cafe was good.

Seedy

robert, Boston, MA, 2006-07-26

The Wilshire Grade has become seedy. The carpets in the room are stained and threadbare. The weather in LA was close to 100 degrees but the air conditioning in the room never worked at all, despite repeated requests to the front desk to fix it. They kept saying they would send someone to fix it, but never did. My business associates who stayed that the hotel also had similar experiences. Because the windows don't open, the room was absolutely stifling. The bed was hard as a rock and the sheets and comforter were cheap and seemed dirty. The carper was stained and in bad condition, so much so that I didn't want to walk on it in my bare feet. The bathroom was dated, especially the shower fixtures which were badly in need of maintenance.

Poor Value

Anonymous, 2006-05-17

The little sports bar was okay

The Wilshire Grand Hotel was way overpriced . The rooms were large but had there was nothing in them. A couple of table lamps, uncomfortable chair and small uncomfortable beds. Also a little TV with a remote that didn't work. The bathroom was even smaller. I'm not sure how old the hotel is but it though it was clean, it seemed old and little money was used to update or refurbish it. It also cost $30 dollars to park our car at the hotel, extra on top of an overpriced room. I think this was definitely a hotel for those visiting on business in the downtown area ONLY. There wasn't anything nearby as far as restaurants, entertainment, shopping, not in walking distance anyway. So no point in staying there. The amenities weren't too inviting or family friendly. I would not recommend this to anyone of my friends or family, in fact I would tell them to definitely not waste their money.
