Millennium Biltmore Hotel

506 South Grand Avenue , Los Angeles, CA 90071
Experience legendary Los Angeles at the historic Biltmore Hotel. Take one glance around this legendary landmark and you'll know why the hotel had been home to presidents, kings and celebrities since it opened in 1923 and is now one of the most popular filming locations in Los Angeles. Built in Spanish-Italian renaissance style to reflect the city's Castilian heritage, the Biltmore has been handsomely preserved and restored, making it the premier hotel in downtown Los Angeles. This landmark features elegantly appointed guestrooms and suites, including the exclusive Club Level, fine restaurants, a health club with a Roman style pool, and a full array of concierge services. Located in the cultural and financial heart of downtown Los Angeles the Biltmore's central location to world-class museums, arts and entertainment, and shopping make for the perfect weekend retreat.

During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Hollywood Walk of Fame
When the Hollywood honchos realized how limited the footprint space was at the Grauman's Chinese Theater, they came up with another way to pay tribute to the starts. Since 1960, more than 2,000 celebrities have been honored along the world's most famous sidewalk. Each bronze medallion, set into the center of a terrazzo star, pays homage to a famous television, film, radio, theater, or recording personality. Although about a third of them are just about as obscure as Michael Jackson's sexual preference -- their fame simply hasn't withstood the test of time -- millions of visitors are thrilled by the sight of famous names like James Dean (1719 Vine St.), John Lennon (1750 Vine St.), Marlon Brando (1765 Vine St.), Rudolph Valentino (6164 Hollywood Blvd.), Marilyn Monroe (6744 Hollywood Blvd.), Elvis Presley (6777 Hollywood Blvd.), Greta Garbo (6901 Hollywood Blvd.), Louis Armstrong (7000 Hollywood Blvd.), Barbra Streisand (6925 Hollywood Blvd.), and Eddie Murphy (7000 Hollywood Blvd.). Gene Autry is all over the place: The singing cowboy earned five different stars (a sidewalk record), one in each category. The sight of bikers, metalheads, homeless wanderers, and hordes of disoriented tourists all treading on memorials to Hollywood's greats makes for a bizarre and somewhat tacky tribute. But the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has been doing a terrific job sprucing up the pedestrian experience with filmstrip crosswalks, swaying palms, and more. And at least one weekend a month, a group of fans calling themselves Star Polishers busy themselves scrubbing tarnished medallions. The legendary sidewalk is continually adding new names, such as Muhammad Ali in front of the Kodak Theatre. The public is invited to attend dedication ceremonies; the honoree -- who pays a whopping $15,000 for the eternal upkeep -- is usually in attendance. Contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, 6255 Sunset Blvd., Suite 911, Hollywood, CA 90028 (tel. 323/469-8311), for information on who's being honored this week.
Hollywood History Museum
The historic Max Factor Building -- Max Factor was the patriarch of the Hollywood make-up industry -- has finally been restored to its original 1935 Art Deco splendor and is now the home of the Hollywood History Museum, which features thousands of famous and rare props, costumes, scripts, cameras, awards, and numerous photos and posters from the television, stage, and recording industries. It's arranged for the visitor to experience Hollywood chronologically -- from the Silent Era and Golden Era to current production technology and a glimpse into the future of the industry. The museum, located across from the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex, also houses a library, a screening room, an education center, and a museum-studio gift shop. Private guided tours are available upon request.
Museum of Contemporary Art/Geffen Contemporary at MOCA
MOCA is Los Angeles's only institution devoted to art from 1940 to the present. Displaying works in a variety of media, it's strong in works by Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, and Mark Rothko, and shows are often superb. For many experts, MOCA's collections are too spotty to be considered world class, and the conservative museum board blushes when offered controversial shows (they passed on a Whitney exhibit that included photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe). Nevertheless, I've seen some excellent exhibitions here.MOCA is housed in three buildings: The Grand Avenue main building (250 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles) is a contemporary red sandstone structure by renowned Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. The museum restaurant, Patinette (Mon, Wed, Fri 11am-5pm; Thurs 11am-8pm; Sat-Sun 11am-6pm; tel. 213/626-1178), located here, is the casual-dining creation of celebrity chef Joachim Splichal (see Patina). The museum's second space, on Central Avenue in Little Tokyo (152 North Central Ave., Los Angeles), was the "temporary" Contemporary while the Grand structure was being built and now houses a superior permanent collection in a warehouse-type space that's been renamed for entertainment mogul and art collector David Geffen. An added feature is a detailed timeline corresponding to the progression of works. Unless there's a visiting exhibit of great interest at the main museum, I recommend that you start at the Geffen building, where it's also easier to park. The third gallery, which opened in January 2001, is at the Pacific Design Center (8687 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood) -- it's the compact building next to the Pacific Design Center. Unlike the other two, admission to this galley is only $3, and emphasis is on contemporary architecture and design, as well as new work by emerging and established artists.

Not Worth The Money

COLLEEN, Springfield, IL

We were hoping for an exceptional New Year's Eve at the Biltmore. We were very disappointed with the outdated rooms, rust colored water and poor amenities. The main business that they cater to are the large weddings in their banquet rooms. I wish the guest rooms were half as nice as the banquet facilities.

Beautiful but noisy

Lost Angeles Central Library--a beautiful building with interesting exhibits.

The public areas of the Millennium Biltmore are beautiful and beautifully maintained. The room we were in was small, the beds were uncomfortable, and the soundproofing seemed to be non-existent! We had several sets of neighbors during the five nights we were there, and we could hear all normal conversations in the rooms and in the halls, and loud laughter and parties in neighboring rooms on a couple of the nights made it impossible to sleep. Management did send security to one of the offending rooms when asked. The staff was friendly and the location excellent.

Nice Hotel

Anonymous, New York, NY, 2006-12-17

Disney hall is about 4 blocks away but it is a hike up the hill.

I liked the Biltmore Hotel a lot. I had a few problems. My breakfast room service order that I put out on my door handle was not picked up one night and the lamp in my room had a short in it. Other than that I had a great stay for my money. The decore of the hotel is gorgeous and has been updated. The rooms are more ordinary but still nice. Eating downtown on the weekends is difficult if you don't want to eat at the hotel restaurants.

Grand and refined

Visit the MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) Disney Hall, and the LA Library

The Millenium Biltomore is a grand, elegant hotel with a place in history. My viti was buring the holidays, so the hotel was decked out inits Christmas finery. The hotel alone was worth exploring just to see the ballrooms and facilities. The indoor pool should be in a move - and given its location in LA, it is very possible that it has been. My room was huge and left me with a feeling of elegant hotels in the past.

Is that all there is?

Anonymous, San Francisco, CA, 2006-11-18

Weekends there are some great walking tours of the old art deco district of downtown L.A.

This hotel has a magnificent facade, indeed all the public features are wonderful. The lounge, the bar, the lobby the elegant hallways - all wonderful. But the rooms themselves are a little smelly and cramped. The concierge we met was ill-informed about dining and entertainment options and inept at searching for information on the internet. Upon arrival my colleague and I both had to request a different room than the initial ones we were first presented with, as they were dirty and smelled bad. Even though the new rooms weren't as gross, my new room had mildew in the shower and was really quite stuffy. I don't recommend this hotel as a place to sleep, but it's' a great place to come and have a drink.

Small room, thin walls

William, Salt Lake City, UT, 2006-11-12

The Water Grill is next door and an awsome place to eat.

The hotel lobby and downstairs was very nice but the room itself was small abd in need a a little TLC. We could hear people on both sides of our room.
