During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Warner Brothers Studios
Warner Brothers offers the most comprehensive -- and the least theme park-like -- of the studio tours. The tour takes visitors on a 2 1/4-hour informational drive-and-walk jaunt around the studio's faux streets. After a brief introductory film, you'll pile into glorified golf carts and cruise past parking spaces marked "Clint Eastwood," "Michael Douglas," and "Sharon Stone," and then walk through active film and television sets such as ER, The Drew Cary Show, and West Wing. Whether it's an orchestra scoring a film or a TV show being taped or edited, you'll get a glimpse of how it's done (nothing is staged for the tour). Stops include the wardrobe department or the mills where sets are made. Whenever possible, you can also visit working sets to watch actors filming actual productions. Reservations are required; children under 8 are not admitted. Bring valid photo ID.
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
The "Fighting Dinosaurs" are not a high school football team, but the trademark symbol of this massive museum: Tyrannosaurus rex and triceratops skeletons poised in a stance so realistic that every kid feels inspired to imitate their Jurassic Park bellows (think Calvin & Hobbes). Opened in 1913 in a beautiful domed Spanish Renaissance building, this massive museum -- it's the largest natural and historical museum in the western United States -- is a 35-hall warehouse of Earth's history, chronicling the planet and its inhabitants from 600 million years ago to the present day, and housing more than 33 million specimens and artifacts. There's a mind-numbing array of exhibits of prehistoric fossils, bird and marine life, gems and minerals, and North American mammals. The kid-friendly Discovery Center entertains children via hands-on, interactive exhibits: Kids can make fossil rubbings, dig for fossils, and view live animals such as snakes and lizards. The best permanent displays include the world's rarest shark, a walk-through vault of priceless gems (including the largest collection of gold in the United States), and an Insect Zoo.The Dinosaur Shop sells ant farms and exploding volcano and model kits, the Ethnic Arts Shop has one-of-a-kind folk art and jewelry from around the world, and the bookstore has an extensive selection of scientific titles and hobbyists' field guides.
L.A. Central Library
This is one of L.A.'s early architectural achievements and the third-largest library in the United States. The city rallied to save the library when arson nearly destroyed it in 1986; the triumphant restoration has returned much of its original splendor. Working in the early 1920s, architect Bertram G. Goodhue employed the Egyptian motifs and materials popularized by the discovery of King Tut's tomb, and combined them with a more modern use of concrete block to great effect. Walking tours are the best way to explore this old beauty; they're led Monday through Friday at 12:30pm, Saturday at 11am and 2pm, and Sunday at 2pm. Warning: Parking in this area can involve a heroic effort. Try visiting on the weekend and using the Flower Street parking entrance; the library will validate your ticket, and you can escape for only $2.

Great Location

Tom, Houston, TX, 2006-11-21

Very close t othe 405 and Sunset Blvd.

Nice hotel whose best feature was its location, and tranquil setting with lots of trees and nature. Very close to the 405, Sunset Blvd and UCLA. Room was decorated in modern earth tones and very clean. Had a refrigerator / kitchen area, and a patio outside. An extra charge of $ 22 / day was added to park the car. Staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Nice hotel, expensive parking

Christina, Minneapolis, MN, 2006-11-15

We could not find a pizza hut that would deliver to the hotel.

The hotel and room itself were very comfortable and clean. When we were there the pool was not heated. Also, you have to take a gulf cart to get to the pool area. We informed the staff who said they would check into it and get back to us, but we never heard anything after that. We thought the parking charge of $22 per day was outrageous. They had valet parking but it definitely wasn't worth the money. My husband had problems with being blocked from using the internet.

Close to UCLA

Anonymous, 2006-11-06

The Promenade is a short distance from the hotel. Westwood is a short drive from the hotel which offers shopping and dining.

My room was located down a long hallway and next to an exit. I found the door propped open. My room was not one of the recently remodeled ones and had some wear and tear issues. I have had larger rooms at this Luxe for the same amount of $$. I workout when I travel, but this Luxe does not offer adequate workout equipment. The pool is nice and the chairs are awesome!!! The music provides a nice ambiance. The Luxe is conveniently located to UCLA.

Construction Underway

Anonymous, Minneapolis, MN, 2006-04-16

The hotel was very contemporary. Supposedly a lot of celebrities stay there, however we didn't see any. Good location to restaurants, shopping.

We checked into the hotel and the clerk informed us that the pool was being refurbished but we could get passes to go swimming at UCLA. the room they gave us was right over the car port so it was very noisy and the car parkers were stationed right under our window so we couldn't open the blinds. When we complained, they gave us another room which had ants in the bed. We complained and they gave us a room with a hole in the ceiling and a bucket in the middle of the room to catch the water. Finally, we were given a jr. suite for the same price. It was lovely, however it was only 1 king bed and a rollaway cot for my daughter that wasn't as comfortable as a queen size bed we originally requested. It was especially disappointing not to have the use of a pool. The UCLA pool was a public pool and we had to pay for parking. It was quite crowded and had few lounge chairs so we had to sit on the grass (it was not what we expected of a California vacation). The location of the hotel was good. Just a few minutes from downtown Brentwood restaurants and shopping.

Met my needs, but.....

Anonymous, 2006-03-11

It is rather isolated but there is one restaurant called the Bel-Air ????? maybe Grille which is in a funky location next to a gas station but has excellent food, service, outdoor seating and you can walk there-very enjoyable.

I chose the Luxe because of the location--easy access to I-405 which was important to me. The rooms had recently been remodeled and were very clean etc., and the staff was very friendly. The negatives were that many rooms were still being remodeled so it was noisy (but that is short-term). The location is not for everyone though. It is very near the Getty Center but I usually like to be able to walk to places (bars, restaurants) when I stay in a city and this hotel is very isolated. It does sit next to the Brentwood neighborhood so if you are a jogger at least you have a nice quiet and pretty neighborhood to enjoy on your run.

Spacious accommodations

Kathy, San Francisco, CA, 2006-02-20

We chose this hotel because it is close to UCLA and we were visiting our children there.

The room is very large and comfortable, but could better touches such as softer towels and perhaps include a continental breakfast. We also had a lightbulb out in our bathroom which should have been seen by maintenance or housekeeping. They are in the process of remodeling the hotel, but i was unsure if our portion was remodeled already or not.

Tranquil, calm.

Anonymous, 2005-10-21

It was a short drive from Rodeo Drive, Robertson's Street and Santa Monica area where many high end, vintage, and trendy stores are located.

The room was larger than expected and decorated a la New York Soho Moderne, it was in neutral decor and was as a result very calming and tranquil in effect. The king size bed was well made with crisp sheets, and there were spa bathrobes available. We were vacationing but noticed many business conferences going on, and so deduced that this hotel was chosen by many for their gracious ways of promoting a comfortable setting for professional bonding. The hotel staff was cordial and helpful. We enjoyed our stay.

About a mile and a half down Sunset Blvd is Barrington Place. There is a great Resturaunt called Divino's that has really excellent Italian. If your looking for boutique shopping there are also some nice shops all over the place.
