During your Inglewood vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
The "Hollywood" Sign
These famous 50-foot-high white sheet-metal letters have come to symbolize the movie industry and the city itself. The sign was erected on Mount Lee in 1923 for $21,000 as an advertisement for a real-estate development. The full text originally read HOLLYWOODLAND and was lined with thousands of 20-watt bulbs around the letters (changed periodically by a caretaker who lived in a small house behind the sign). The sign gained dubious notoriety when actress Peg Entwistle leapt to her death from the "H" in 1932. The LAND section was damaged by a landslide, and the entire sign fell into major disrepair until the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce spearheaded a campaign to repair it (Hugh Hefner, Alice Cooper, Gene Autry, and Andy Williams were all major contributors). Officially completed in 1978, the 450-foot-long installation is now protected by a fence and motion detectors. The best view is from down below, at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Bronson Avenue. Tip: It may look like it on a map, but Beachwood Drive does not lead to the sign. If you want to reach the sign on foot, it requires a rather arduous 5-mile round-trip hike on the Brush Canyon Trail in Griffith Park -- the trail head is at the end of Canyon Drive. For more information call the Griffith Park headquarters at tel. 323/913-4688.
Hollywood Entertainment Museum
Initially intended to be a cornerstone of Hollywood Boulevard renewal, this 33,000-square-foot facility was plagued by internal politicking and faulty architecture long before it opened in 1996. Once you find its awkward subterranean entrance, you'll enter a seriously unkitschy museum devoted to the entertainment arts. On display are highlights from a treasure-trove collection of original sets and props from nearly a century of film, TV, and radio. For example, you can pull up a stool at the complete Cheers bar (look for where the stars carved their initials in the bar during the final episode) or sit in the captain's chair of the original set from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The best part is a series of interactive demonstration rooms that teach various tricks of filmmaking; visitors can create Foley soundtracks for a movie segment, test their skills at digital editing, and try out other fun, educational procedures. Fans of the defunct Max Factor Museum of Beauty will be happy to learn that the collection from Hollywood's premier motion-picture cosmetic designer is shown here -- antique makeup pots, glamour photos, and superstar toupees intact. If you're still not satiated, sign up for the studio back-lot tour to learn all about the film-making process.
California Science Center
A $130 million renovation -- reinvention, actually -- has turned the former Museum of Science and Industry into Exposition Park's newest attraction. Using high-tech sleight-of-hand, the center stimulates kids of all ages with questions, answers, and lessons about the world. One of the museum's highlights is Tess, a 50-foot animatronic woman whose muscles, bones, organs, and blood vessels are revealed, demonstrating how the body reacts to a variety of external conditions and activities. (Appropriate for children of all ages, Tess doesn't possess reproductive organs.) Another highlight is the new Air and Space Gallery, a seven-story space where real air- and spacecraft are suspended overhead. There are nominal fees, ranging from $2 to $5, to enjoy the science center's more thrilling attractions. You can pedal a bicycle across a high-wire suspended 43 feet above the ground (demonstrating the principle of gravity and counterweights) or get strapped into the Space Docking Simulator for a virtual-reality taste of zero gravity. There's plenty more, and plans for expansion are always in the works. The IMAX theater boasts a screen seven stories high and 90 feet wide, with state-of-the-art surround sound and 3-D technology. Films are screened throughout the day until 9pm and are nearly always breathtaking, even the two-dimensional ones.

The Adventurer is a great value. Clean, comfortable room, much larger than others in the price range. Free shuttle to the airport. Shuttle also available to the beach or shopping. Full-service restaurant on site, with free continental breakfast, and free snacks in the evening. Friendly staff.

not friendly stuff and room is dirty

Anonymous, Seattle, WA, 2007-03-05

This hotel is in a bad location. It took us an hour to find this hotel from LAX airport. We called to ask a stuff direction, but they didn't know how to tell the direction. Well, the room is large but very dirty and look pretty old. No internet wireless access. Also, the parking lot is closed around midnight, so we had to walk to the front desk to tell them to open the parking lot door. In conclusion, bad location, not friendly stuff, dirty room, noisy, and so on. I should have spent more money to stay at other hotel. not recommended !!

Overall Good

Anonymous, 2007-03-04

This was my first stay here. The place is kind of out dated but it was better than the hell hole next door. The staff was friendly, and I met some very interesting people from all over the world there. Overall it was ok for the money I spent.

Unacceptable

Happy Hour - Too noisy not for me

I did not stay at this hotel. Upon entering I knew it would be unsafe for a woman traveling alone. The furniture was ratty and old. Totally unacceptable at any price range.

Hotel "down-at-heel" needs taking care of

Christopher, 2007-02-09

Strip-mall across Century Blvd. Not a particularly "safe" looking area.

This place needs a good manager. Room was in bad state of repair. Huge (old) water stain on bedroom ceiling; bathroom electrical socket was loose (not attached to wall properly) and was no a GFI socket. Toilet roll holder was hanging on the wall by one screw (it fell out on first usage!) Knobs missing on chest of drawers (screws were still inplace though...a hazard!) Leg on one chair was broken away from frame. TV remote not working on first night (replaced the second night)Unhelpful/uninformed front desk help first night. Continenetal breakfast was one small, overbaked muffin (no butter/jam, etc.) and packet of decaf. coffee. Wait staff "out-to-lunch" on all three mornings. Carelss and disinterested wait-staff service. "Begging" tips containers everywhere, even at check-in desk! The driver picking me up at the airport offered no assistance with luggage...watched while I carried my own luggage into the van and onto the shelf; then before we left airport, commented that "Tips are very much appreciated". Repeated that message when I didn't immediately get up and put "tips" (bribes) in the container. Envelopes in rooms labelled "Show appreciation to your housekeeper. $1 per day per person is recommended." This "tips" thing is blatant. Finally, on each day, I had to go to front desk to have my door key-card reset with code to enable me to open my door. Frequent failure of card to operate the door lock.

Good value for the money

Glenda, 2006-12-29

I recommend that you ask to view the room before checking in only because there are some udated rooms that will make your visit more pleasurable.

The first room we were in was not updated and the bathroom needed some attention, but after we changed rooms, everything was much better. The room had just been udated I liked the fact that they had wireless internet and the option to eat there. The staff was very accommodating, and the security was friendly.

This hotel has a very unique atmosphere. It's for the adventurous! I enjoyed my stay, but the proximaty to the airport made if very noisey. Uniques staff, cheap drinks, and a mulit national clientel made the stay very interesting.
