During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Museum of Tolerance
The Museum of Tolerance is designed to expose prejudices, bigotry, and inhumanity while teaching racial and cultural tolerance. Since its opening in 1993, it's hosted 3.5 million visitors from around the world, including King Hussein of Jordan and the Dalai Lama. It's located in the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an institute founded by the legendary Nazi-hunter. While the Holocaust figures prominently here, this is not just a Jewish museum -- it's an academy that broadly campaigns for a live-and-let-live world. Tolerance is an abstract idea that's hard to display, so most of this $50 million museum's exhibits are high-tech and conceptual in nature. Fast-paced interactive displays are designed to touch the heart as well as the mind, and engage everyone from heads of state to the MTV generation.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art
For more than 50 years the LACMA has been one of the finest art museums in the nation, housing a 110,000-piece collection that includes works by Degas, Rembrandt, Hockney, and Monet. The huge complex -- it's the largest visual arts museum west of the Mississippi -- was designed by three very different architects over a span of 30 years, and though the architectural fusion can be migraine inducing, this city landmark is well worth delving into. The Japanese Pavilion, which has exterior walls made of Kalwall, a translucent material that, like shoji screens, permits the entry of soft natural light. Inside is a collection of Japanese Edo paintings that's rivaled only by the holdings of the emperor of Japan. The Anderson Building, the museum's contemporary wing, is home to 20th-century painting and sculpture. Here you'll find works by Matisse, Magritte, and a good number of Dada artists. The Ahmanson Building houses the rest of the museum's permanent collections. You'll find everything from 2,000-year-old pre-Columbian Mexican ceramics to 19th-century portraiture, to a unique glass collection spanning the centuries. Other displays include one of the nation's largest holdings of costumes and textiles, and an important Indian and Southeast Asian art collection. The Hammer Building is primarily used for major special-loan exhibitions. Free guided tours covering the museum's highlights depart on a regular basis from here.Be sure to visit the museum's website to see what special exhibits are currently on display.
Sony Pictures Studio Tour
Although it doesn't have quite the historical cachet as Warner Brothers or Paramount, a lot of movie history was made at this Culver City lot. The 2-hour walking tour includes stops at classic stage scenes such as the Yellow Brick Road winding through Munchkinland, sets from modern thrillers like Men in Black, and an opportunity to drop in on the Jeopardy! set to test your trivia prowess. But the main reason for the tour is the chance to catch a glimpse at the stars who work here (it's one of the busiest studio lots in the world).

Good Location

Anonymous, Sacramento, CA, 2006-04-25

Vist the Farmer's Market and the Grove shopping area....very cool! About a mile away!

The Elan was located a block from the Beverly Center which was nice. Lots of food choices nearby. The room was clean and the staff was very friendly. They did bring us the wrong car once from valet parking and we noticed that they left the cars unlocked and the keys on the hood of the car in the parking area. Although the parking area is secure, we were able to take the elevator to the basement which meant anyone else could too. In other words, I wouldn't leave anything valuable in your car! Breakfast was good and the wine and cheese reception each night was enjoyable. I think the room prices are a bit too high for what you get...but it was an nice stay.

Great location, clean, modern feel and look, nice staff, parking is expensive

Jeniffer, Seattle, WA, 2005-12-28

Sushi cafe on the same block was very good. Breakfast at Jan's across the street was good as well. Get the fresh squeezed OJ.

The location was perfect for me, close to shopping, La Brea, Sunset etc. It was easy to find. Good restaurants close by. Staff was friendly. Wine and cheese reception a nice touch. I never got up in time for the breakfast however. The bed and linens were great. I liked the room set up and was thankful for the iron, board, coffee maker & hair dryer. I personally would have liked a fan in the bathroom because it was so fogged up afterwards. I also felt the parking was quite expensive in addition to feeling bad every time the guy had to valet park the car. In general a modern, clean, well-kept hotel.

No Room With No View

Paul, Daytona Beach, FL, 2005-10-09

One of the largest upscale malls is a half block away with movie theaters, a large food court and a full service "boutique" restaurant. Good place to kill time. There's a very nice Japanese restaurant a few steps away from hotel. Stay away from the diner across the styreet ... the people at the hotel will try to shove it down your throat.

The Elan Hotel Modern attempts to sell itself as being just that, modern. Although they did a nice job renovating the '50's structure, they failed miserably to make the guests rooms comfortable. What's the point in offering Room Service (from a diner across the street) when you have to sit on your bed to eat? I think this is the first hotel room I've ever stayed in that was so small there was no table ... no where to sit and read the paper, work on a computer or dine-in. One's entire existence while staying there was on the bed.

Fabulous Los Angeles hotel with a diverse clientele

Joseph, New York, NY, 2005-08-09

1. Melrose Ave. with its many restaurants (Antonio's for Mexican food and Indian Star for Indian cuisine, for example) is not far away. 2. Canters on Fairfax has great pastrami and corned beef. 3. Pink's on La Brea offers its famous chili dogs to long lines of cutomers

My wife and I are frequent international and domestic travellers and have stayed in several Los Angeles hotels over the years. We now put the Elan Modern at the top of our preferred list. It is a small boutique-style establishment with an excellent location on Beverly Blvd. close to restaurants, shopping (you can even walk to the Beverly Center) and night life. The valet parking with its own underground garage is swift and efficient, while all of the the amenities of the hotel are superb. Our room was large with a king size bed outfitted with top-of-the-line linens with a huge bathroom fully equipped with an abundance of high quality towels, excellent luxury toiletries and a powerful hair dryer. The room was beautifully and tastefully decorated in soft muted colors with furnishings of Art Deco/Moderne design. A high speed computer connection (DSL) was there for our use (we didn't need it on this occasion), while free Internet access and a printer were also available in the lobby lounge area (these I did use several times and found them very handy for getting information regarding LA attractions and driving directions). Welcome room amenities included a list of local restaurants with precise addresses, phone numbers, ethnic identities and estimated price ranges, as well as up-to-date periodicals focusing on museums, popular tourist activities and local attractions. In addition, the continental breakfast included in the room rate was a cornucopia of hot and cold beverages, fruit, cereals, hard boiled eggs, muffins and toast. The hotel attracts a clientele of wide diversity. The front desk and housekeeping services were top notch and extremely friendly and accommodating. The management of the Elan Modern knows the needs and taste-level of its clientele and delivers the goods. This is a first-class operation. We will return!

Very friendly but sparse

Lawrence, Nashville, TN, 2005-05-07

The staff of the Elan Modern are very personable and friendly. The rooms are nice enough. But it seemed a little strange because I got the feeling they took an ordinary 1960s hotel (like a Motel 6 or Days Inn) and tried to seriously upgrade it. But they had not done anything to the interior of the elevators and the rooms were well appointed, but smallish -- about what you would expect in a 1960s Days Inn. It was very pleasant, but not what I would expect for an up-scale hotel, which is what it is billed as.
