During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
NBC Studios
According to a security guard, John Wayne and Redd Foxx once got into a fight here after Wayne refused to ride in the same limo as Foxx, who called the movie star a "redneck." Well, your NBC tour will probably be a bit more docile than that. The guided 70-minute indoor tour, which departs every half-hour, includes a behind-the-scenes unstaged look at The Tonight Show with Jay Leno set; wardrobe, makeup, and set-building departments; and several sound studios. In fact, NBC is the only TV studio that offers the public a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of its television operation, and it's a lot less expensive than the competition's studio tours. It doesn't have the cachet of a major motion picture studio tour, but it's entertaining nonetheless. Note: Tours are sold on a first-come, first-served basis and sell out early during peak vacation season, so arrive early. Also, this is one of the few studio tours that doesn't have a minimum age requirement.
Hollywood History Museum
The historic Max Factor Building -- Max Factor was the patriarch of the Hollywood make-up industry -- has finally been restored to its original 1935 Art Deco splendor and is now the home of the Hollywood History Museum, which features thousands of famous and rare props, costumes, scripts, cameras, awards, and numerous photos and posters from the television, stage, and recording industries. It's arranged for the visitor to experience Hollywood chronologically -- from the Silent Era and Golden Era to current production technology and a glimpse into the future of the industry. The museum, located across from the Hollywood & Highland entertainment complex, also houses a library, a screening room, an education center, and a museum-studio gift shop. Private guided tours are available upon request.
Ocean Front Walk at Venice Beach
This has long been one of L.A.'s most colorful areas and a must-visit for any first-time tourist. Founded at the turn of the last century, Venice was a development inspired by its Italian namesake. Authentic gondolas plied miles of inland waterways lined with rococo palaces. In the 1950s, Venice became the stomping grounds of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and other beats. In the 1960s, this was the epicenter of L.A.'s hippie scene.Today, Venice is still one of the world's most engaging bohemian locales. It's not an exaggeration to say that no visit to L.A. would be complete without a stroll along the famous paved beach path, an almost surreal assemblage of every L.A. stereotype -- and then some. Among stalls and stands selling cheap sunglasses, Mexican blankets, and "herbal ecstasy" pills swirls a carnival of humanity that includes bikini-clad in-line skaters, tattooed bikers, tan hunks pumping iron at Muscle Beach, panhandling vets, beautiful wannabes, and plenty of tourists and gawkers. On any given day, you're bound to come across all kinds of performers: mimes, break-dancers, seriously stoned drummers, chain-saw jugglers, talking parrots, and the occasional apocalyptic evangelist.

Under revonvation

Anonymous, San Francisco, CA

Sofitel is currently under renovation. The hotel was more like a construction site. Looking through the hotel window I can see the cranes and the windows were dirty... On the plus side, amenities were plenty, and it was especially great since they were from Roger & Gallet. The cleaning people also showed up about 4 times a day. And location is great, right across from the shopping mall. I'd wait until their renovation is done (April) before returning.

Great Hotel, Awful Restaurant

Edwin, Honolulu, HI, 2006-12-29

Sofitel is in a central spot near endless shopping choices from high end to value shopping.

Sofitel LA has recently gone through major renovations. It's an upscale hotel with great amenities. The fitness room is the best I've ever seen in any hotel. The staff is very helpful, especially the valet and bell staff. Room service was fast and food was good. The rooms are very clean and nicely remodeled. Sofitel is in an excellent location near tons of shopping and great restaurants. The valets will be more than happy to give you directions. I don't feel the concierge was as helpful and knowledgeable as a concierge should be, in fact, the valet supervisor would make a much better concierge any day. The restaurant and bar have a modern nightclub ambience. Unfortunately that's about all you get is ambience. The service was below average. Simon LA features Kerry Simon, who is supposedly some great chef from the Food Channel and a successful restaurant in Las Vegas. The food was fine, nothing special. Actually the most memorable part of dinner was the cotton candy! It was a bad experience and I don't think it's isolated to us. Search around for reviews of this restaurant and you'll see that there are a several negative reviews. Save your money and try any of the other fine restaurants within a short drive of the hotel. Overall, we recommend the hotel. Skip the concierge as the valets are more knowledgeable and don't waste your money at the restaurant Simon LA.

very convenient

Beverly Center and many more shops and stores within walking distance from the hotel.

TheSofitel hotel was very convenient to me because it was centrally located to many shopping areas including being right across the street from the Beverley Center where you can find many places to eat as well as shop. I also had the opportunity to go to the spa which was absolutely wonderful. All of the staff at the hotel were very friendly and professional. I would definitely stay at the Sofitel during my next stay in Los Angeles.

Very comfortable

Anonymous, Boston, MA, 2006-02-22

It is located right next to the Beverly Center and a short walk from the great shopping street, Robertson Blvd.

We have stayed at the Sofitel many times. While they are under construction there are some minor inconveniences (like noise beginning at 7AM) Besides that, the staff was extremely helpful, friendly and accomodating. The beds are extremely comfortable. We look forward to staying there again after all of the renovations are complete.

Wow - Had a Great Time!

Leslie, San Diego, CA, 2006-02-11

Catch Billy Crystal's show "700 Sundays" at the Wilshire down the street - it's a blast!

After a grueling drive to LA on a Friday night, we really needed a comfortable place to stay and the Sofitel hit the mark. Even with the construction going on , the staff made us feel at home and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. The room was beautiful, and everyone we dealt with was above the rank and file.

old world elegance and modern convenience

Anonymous, San Diego, CA, 2005-12-03

Beverly Center is directly across the street from this hotel. There must be over 100 shops there not including the 20 or so dining options.

The Sofitel is a smart looking hotel with nice big rooms and top rate service. The bed was incredibly comfortable with oversized pillows and a thick down comforter. The large bathroom was well stocked with top quality French toiletries, one plush white bathrobe per guest, and a huge tub and shower. The Sofitel dining room on the 2nd floor serves hearty American food with a French twist and the portions are generous. The coffee comes in a huge French press and is the best I have had in years.

Nice thoughtful people.

David, Dallas, TX, 2005-07-29

The hotel is across the streeet from the beverly center. As far as restaurants, it is fairly convenient to those on Sunset and, of course, those on La Cienega, although, travelling by car in LA is an adventure even for a short distance. Still, LA is a fun city and we had a great time. By the way, for a very tasty lunch and excellent baked goods, try Porto's cafe. A "stuffed potato ball" in a mu

The staff was friendly, professional and thoughtful. The service was prompt. Unfortuantely. construction was in progress which led to some inconvenience but they did the best they could under the circumstances. We were very pleased and would stay there again for about this price.
