Haas-Lilienthal House
Of the city's many gingerbread Victorians, this handsome Queen Anne house is one of the most flamboyant. The 1886 structure features all the architectural frills of the period, including dormer windows, flying cupolas, ornate trim, and winsome turret. The elaborately styled house is now a museum, its rooms fully furnished with period pieces. The Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage maintains the house and offers docent-led tours. The 1-hour tours (the only way to see the house) start every 20 to 30 minutes.

Ghiradelli Square
This National Historic Landmark property dates from 1864, when it served as a factory making Civil War uniforms, but it's best known as the former chocolate and spice factory of Domingo Ghirardelli (pronounced "Gear-a-deli"), who purchased it in 1984. The factory has since been converted into a three-level mall containing 50-plus stores and 11 dining establishments. Scheduled street performers entertain regularly in the West Plaza and fountain area. Incidentally, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company still makes chocolate, but its factory is in a lower-rent district in the East Bay. Still, if you have a sweet tooth, you won't be disappointed at the mall's fantastic old-fashioned soda fountain.

Aquarium of the Bay
The latest major addition to Fisherman's Wharf is Aquarium of the Bay, a $38-million, 1-million-gallon marine attraction filled with sharks, stingrays, and more. A moving footpath transports visitors through clear acrylic tunnels. The aquarium ultimately is not a destination in itself, but it's a good place to take the kids if you're in the neighborhood.

Hop on the cable car at the hotel instead of going down to the line at Powell and Market.

Great Central Location

Shopping is very close.

Hotel Union Square is conveniently located in a central area where you can access the Cable Cars, walk to shops, and do general sight seeing. The location was great. However, the room was below average, and the hotel staff were not accommodating.

My review of Hotel Union Square

I arrived at the hotel at 9:30am, but was unable to check-in as the rooms where not ready. I left my luggage at the front and went about my day returning at about 2pm for the check-in. Instead of a double bed, I was given 2 twin beds. I was told that none were available and that with my reservation the hotel could give me which ever room was available. Although a room with a queen bed was available they couldn't give it to me as it was booked for another guest. I explained how unfair this was since I specifically booked my room with the guarantee of a double not a twin bed which was too small. On top of this, the room had no bathtub (only a shower), no refrigerator as indicated in the amenities, and not to mention that it was a small dank corner facing a wall. The room looked nothing like the picture shown. The room was so cold that I had to request a portable heater which was kept on all night. The "on-site parking with in/out privileges" fails to mention that it would cost about $30 each day. The alternative choice would be to feed the parking meter every hour.
