During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Diego Miniature Railroad & Carousel
Located just east of the zoo entrance, these antiquated enticements never fail to delight the pre-teen set. The open-air railroad takes a 3-minute journey through a grove of eucalyptus trees, while the charming carousel is one of the last in the world to still offer a ring grab (free ride if you seize the brass one). The carousel, built in 1910, is a classic, with hand-carved wood frogs, horses, and pigs.
Giant Dipper Roller Coaster
A local landmark for almost 80 years, the Giant Dipper is one of two surviving fixtures from the original Belmont Amusement Park (the other is The Plunge swimming pool). After sitting dormant for 15 years, the vintage wooden roller coaster, with more than 2,600 feet of track and 13 hills, underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 1991. If you're in the neighborhood (especially with older kids), it's worth a stop, but adults may find the whole experience a bit too spine-rattling. You must be at least 50 inches tall to ride the roller coaster. You can also ride on the Giant Dipper's neighbor, the Liberty Carousel ($2), and other carny-style rides (unlimited ride wristband $17).
Chula Vista Nature Center
Sweetwater Marsh is one of San Diego's top bird-watching spots, and the nature center provides walking trails and a facility for experiencing the bird life, as well as stingrays and small sharks in kid-level open tanks. There's a walk-through aviary of shore birds, and other aviaries feature raptors and burrowing owls. The parking lot is located away from the center and a shuttle bus ferries guests between the two points.

Great Location, Great Hotel
Justin, 2006-10-12
You have Fashion Valley Mall within a very short walk. Also, Old Town a very short drive about 10-15 minutes away.
The Handlery Hotel and Resort was a very good hotel and located within walking distance of a mall with all the major stores. I also found plenty of dining options within a ten minute drive. The hotel room itself was clean and had comfortable accommodations. The bathroom was standard and was a bit small but good overall. The only concern I had was the bathroom showed signs of age and the faucet had a constant leak. However, it was not something that would make me not stay at this hotel again.

GOOD RESTAURENTS ONLY 5-10 MIN AWAY BY CAR.
IN GENERAL THIS HOTEL NEEDS A COMPLETE MAKEOVER ESPECIALLY THE ROOMS THEMSELVES. IT HAS A 50's LOOK. ALSO THEY CHARGED A $10 PARKING FEE PER NIGHT.
Handlery Hotel and Resort

The Handlery Hotel and Resort has a good location near many shopping areas and downtown San Diego but it is not what I would consider a resort as it is not secluded and is within spitting distance from I-8. The hotel staff was courteous, responsive, and friendly. Housekeeping did a decent job of keeping the room clean. However, the room did feel a little bit cramped, there was not much sound isolation from other rooms, and the TV was very small.
