During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Diego Automotive Museum
Even if you don't know a distributor from a dipstick, you're bound to ooh-and-aah over the classic, antique, and exotic cars here. Every one is so pristine you'd swear it just rolled off the line, from an 1886 Benz to a 1931 Rolls-Royce Phaeton to the 1981 DeLorean. Most of the time, temporary shows take over the facility, so check ahead to see if it's one you're interested in. Some days you can take a peek at the ongoing restoration program, and the museum sponsors many outdoor car rallies and other events. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for your visit.
Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Downtown
Opened in 1993, the downtown branch is the second location of the Museum of Contemporary Art (the original branch is in La Jolla). Two large and two smaller galleries present changing exhibitions of nationally and internationally distinguished contemporary artists; plan to spend about half an hour here. Lectures and tours for adults and children are also offered. The first Thursday evening of every month is "TNT" (Thursday Night Thing), with eclectic artist events and drawing the martini set. In 2005 MCA will take over the baggage building of the Santa Fe depot across the street, which will almost triple the exhibition space at this branch, making it the preeminent museum in downtown. Docent tours are available on request.
San Diego Model Railroad Museum
Okay, so it's not high culture as we know it, but this museum is cool and pleasing, and worth 30 to 60 minutes of your time, especially if you have kids in tow. Six permanent, scale-model railroads depict Southern California's transportation history and terrain with an astounding attention to miniature details -- the exhibits occupy a 24,000-square-foot space. Children will enjoy the hands-on Lionel trains, and train buffs of all ages will appreciate the interactive multimedia displays. Allow a half-hour to an hour for your visit.

great location for bus access

Anonymous, Vancouver, BC

The bus system was very easy to follow and the drivers were really helpful to get us to the connecting routes.

We took the local bus just down the road from the motel. The attendent at the desk told us which which bus to catch. The rooms at the motel were clean, but you couldn't open the windows for fresh air. There was no safety latch that was safe. I felt our belongings were safe because there was a safe in the room for us to use. We used both restaurants in the complex, one was for breakfast and the other had a piano bar and we really enjoyed our evenings there after sight-seeing during the day.

Very Basic

Anonymous, 2006-10-29

The Travelodge San Diego Mission Valley/Hotel Circle, San Diego, CA was a very basic motel (not hotel) room. Set next door to the I-8 freeway there was constant traffic noise. The pool is small and set in the middle of the parking lot so scenery isn't involved. The good news is that the motel has easy access to the mission and pacific beach exits (10 minutes from motel to beach). It is also 5 minutes from the Fashion Valley shopping mall. Easy access to the I-8 and I-5 so getting to the gaslamp or Balboa park districts was easy. Sea world is approximately 10 minutes away. The restaurants next door are acceptable but I would recommend driving a few minutes to the beach, the mall, the gaslamp or the university district as the food selections are endless and wonderful.

ugh

Anonymous, Hartford, CT, 2006-08-26

unfriendly upon arrival and it never got any better. Why put a single woman with a heavy suitcase on the second floor when it's a walk up? Taxi took a long time to get there but only seconds to return to the airport ?

Upkeep and Cleanliness Lacking

Jennifer, Reno, NV, 2006-06-05

The restaurant with outdoor seating served good food, and had excellent service.

The location of this hotel was good because there was easy freeway access. The food in the hotel restaurants was good and the service was excellent. However, the hotel cleanliness was lacking. The shower and bathroom counter was not very clean. THey both needed scrubbing. Some of the caulking in the tub needed to be replaced badly. Also, the bathroom window was broken. It stayed about an inch open, and wouldn't close completely, or open any further than an inch. The size of the room was nice and large with the two beds. But overall, for what we paid for the room, I was dissappointed. I expected nicer accomodations for the price.

A clean, well-lit place...

Ronald, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-02-04

Hours can be spent Downtown. Park on the street after 6 to avoid the inflated parking garage rates and be mindful of the one-way streets. Pass on the familiar, mega-chain businesses; there's always a far more interesting local alternative just across the street.

Let's face it: the reason for going to San Diego (save for its proximity to Mexico) is the downtown excitement. Yet, unless you're willing to max-out a fresh credit card on the downtown hotels, affordable lodging can only be found in the downtown periphery, with the Mission Valley district being the best-suited alternate. The Mission Valley Travelodge, located on Hotel Circle, is the perfect destination for the frugal traveler who doesn't mind trading the prospect of 4 star amenities for the simple conveniences afforded by this hotel. When evaluating a hotel, one really must compare the rates with the facilities and services rendered. You won't find a fresh mint on your pillow here, but the reasonable rates are backed by outstanding house-keeping services and a friendly staff. The round-the-clock check-in desk is a traveler's dream-come-true. Wireless service is offered and each room comes equipped with a safe to stash your valuables. The rooms themselves are quaint, somewhat spartan, yet entirely comfortable. By some miracle of engineering, noise from adjacent rooms is nonexistent at best, barely audible at worst. And did I mention the soap? I'm not sure what it's made of, but it smells like honey and comes wrapped in paper emblazoned with the most amiable-looking bear you've ever seen. Add on HBO and a coffee maker and it's almost as if you never left home. Chances are you won't be spending much time in these rooms (what with everything San Diego has to offer), but the downtime spent in them will prove to be very enjoyable. Cheers.

Convenient Location and Helpful Staff

Nicole, Los Angeles, CA, 2005-08-14

If traveling to the hotel by Taxi, be sure to get a fare quote BEFORE you get in the cab. On the way to the hotel I paid $20 for the fare and on the way back to the airport it was only $13.....Traffic conditions were the same.

The location of this hotel is very convenient as it is less than 5 miles form the San Diego airport. The hotel offers non-smoking rooms and two dining options. The front desk staff was very helpful and provided excellent assistance. The rooms were clean, but had not been updated in many years.
