During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Stuart Collection
Consider the Stuart Collection a work in progress on a large scale. Through a 1982 agreement between the Stuart Foundation and UCSD, the still-growing collection consists of site-related sculptures by leading contemporary artists. Start by picking up a map from the information booth, and wend your way through the 1,200-acre campus to discover the 15 highly diverse artworks. Among them is Niki de Saint Phalle's Sun God, a jubilant 14-foot-high fiberglass bird on a 15-foot concrete base. Nicknamed "Big Bird," it's been made an unofficial mascot by the students, who use it as the centerpiece of their annual celebration, the Sun God Festival. Also in the collection are Alexis Smith's Snake Path, a 560-foot-long slate-tile pathway that winds up the hill from the Engineering Mall to the east terrace of the spectacular Geisel Library (breathtaking architecture that's a fabulous sculpture itself); and Terry Allen's Trees, three eucalyptus trees encased in lead. One tree emits songs, and another poems and stories, while the third stands silent in a grove of trees the students call "The Enchanted Forest." Allow at least 2 hours to tour the entire collection.
Cabrillo National Monument
Breathtaking views mingle with the early history of San Diego, which began when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo arrived in 1542. His statue dominates the tip of Point Loma, 422 feet above sea level, which is also a vantage point for watching migrating Pacific gray whales en route from the Arctic Ocean to Baja California December through March. A self-guided tour of the restored lighthouse (1855) illuminates what life was like here more than a century ago (fog and low clouds made the lighthouse ineffective so another was built close to the water in 1891). National Park Service rangers lead walks at the monument, and there are tide pools to explore at the base of the peninsula. On the other side of the point is the Bayside Trail, a 3.2-mile round-trip down to a lookout over the bay. Free 30-minute videos and slide shows on Cabrillo, tide pools, and the whales are shown on the hour daily from 10am to 4pm. Note the view from the visitor center to the left (north); the blocky structure on the water is the navy's nuclear submarine base. The drive from downtown takes about a half-hour.
San Diego Natural History Museum
This museum focuses on the flora, fauna, and mineralogy of Southern and Baja California. Kids marvel at the animals they find here, including live snakes, tarantulas, and turtles. As a binational museum, research is done on both sides of the border and most exhibits are bilingual. You can see them all in about half an hour. Call or check the museum's website for a current schedule of special visiting exhibits. There's a 300-seat large-format movie theater, and two films are included in the price of admission.

Nice hotel

John, Houston, TX, 2006-07-10

Although we did not visit any of the attractions in San Diego this time, the hotel is within a short drive of most of them. The front desk has explicit directions to customers as to how to get there.

The location of the hotel was of utmost importance. The room was large and bed was comfortable. The things we thought they could have improved on was the air conditioning and the restaurant (on the property). The air conditioning didn't seem to take out the humidity like it should have. We visited San Diego in July, and we kept throwing off the covers when the room got too warm and sticky and then bringing them back on to us when the room cooled off. The restaurant was only used for breakfast three times on our stay. One time, we were pleased with the service, but the second and third times we were not. My wife had to wait on a table for 45 minutes for breakfast one morning when there were plenty of tables available in an adjacent dining area. Another time, the host simply was not a "people person" and seemingly had not been trained, or smart enough to treat customers like they should be treated. Everyone at the front desk was cordial and helpful. Check-in and check-out was a breeze.

We really liked the restaurant.

Jack, Indianapolis, IN, 2006-02-15

We visited Old Town which is just a short drive away and enjoyed it very much.

We were very pleased with our room. It was comfortable and nicely decorated. We especially liked the restaurant. I believe the name was The Tickled Trout. We had dinner there on Valentine's Day and thought the food and service were excellent. We would definitely stay there again.

nice staff

they offer parkeing at the hotel, I would use that service, beacuse the poarking in the neighboorhood, is hard to find.

I had no problems with the staff, they were very nice .

JORGE, La Paz, 2005-12-12

the room is very comfortable but not for more than 2 persons, a family for exemple, i like the bathroom is independently from the vanity area, the area for shoping is very close, good security at the back side rooms.

A great short stay

Anonymous, Norfolk, VA, 2005-12-10

Good food in the "Tickled Trout Restaurant and it's just a mile or so th the Pacific Highway which is an easy shot to downtown and the airport.

We stayed at this hotel twice in the past week, once prior to our trip to Baja and once when we returned. It is in a convient location for seeing San Diego and the hotel provides excellent directions to area attractions. Our room was fine with all of the usual amenities and the staff was very couteous and helpful. The bathroom had been recently renovated and was better than most. We would definitely stay here again.

My review of Ramada Plaza Hotel Circle South

Anonymous, Orlando, FL, 2005-12-05

The Best Western STovall was very comfortable and the room was very nice. A real draawback is that there was no transportation available to the airport. That would prevent me from returning.

disappointing

OLSD TOWN SAN DIEGO is close - great food ...nice area to walk eat and shop

the ramada in - hotel circle in san diego was a bit disappointing ...check in was painless and people were nice....the room was a bit beat up - i have stayed in a lot of hotels - i made my living traveling 9 months of the year for 19 yrs - this was one of those hotels where you did NOT want to walk on the carpet barefoot - the room was stuffy and stale....to top it all off - the hotel had booked most of its rooms (obviously giving a deal) to a youth soccer tournament - kids were rtunning wild - ice wars were going on in the hallways and littered crud on the floors - the kids were insanely noisy and defient - i realize that is up to parents to watch the kids BUT the hotel did not hire extra or ANY security for the weekend - they SHOULD HAVE KNOWN - there was no excuse.... i would not stay there again - it is typical of the RAMADA chain - hit or miss always.....

Good value for the money

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2005-11-20

The IPayOne sports arena is a little over a mile away. They have sporting events as well as concerts. I attended a concert there. Great arena.

I stayed 1 night in this hotel. It was a good value for the money. The room was a little bit small and the beds weren't very comfortable, but what hotel has comfortable beds? There is a restaurant/bar downstairs. Drinks are cheap :) This hotel is good if you want to save money and you aren't planning on a long stay.

My review is actually of the Days Inn in Mission Bay. The location worked out better for us, so no worries.
