During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Pacific Design Center
The bold architecture and overwhelming scale of the Pacific Design Center, designed by Argentinean architect Cesar Pelli, aroused controversy when it was erected in 1975. Sheathed in gently curving cobalt-blue glass, the seven-story building houses more than 750,000 square feet of wholesale interior-design showrooms and is known to locals as "the blue whale." When the property for the design center was acquired in the 1970s, almost all of the small businesses that lined this stretch of Melrose Avenue were demolished. Only Hugo's Plating, which still stands in front of the center, successfully resisted the wrecking ball. In 1988, a second boxlike structure, dressed in equally dramatic Kelly green, was added to the design center and surrounded by a protected outdoor plaza.
Schindler House
A protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright and contemporary of Richard Neutra, Austrian architect Rudolph Schindler designed this innovative modern house for himself in 1921 and 1922. It's now home to the Los Angeles arm of Austria's Museum of Applied Arts (MAK). The house is noted for its complicated interlocking spaces; the interpenetration of indoors and out; simple, unadorned materials; and technological innovations. Docent-guided tours are conducted at no additional charge on weekends only. The MAK Center offers guides to L.A.-area buildings by Schindler and other Austrian architects, and presents visiting related exhibitions and creative arts programming. Call for schedules.
Museum of Television and Radio
Want to see the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show (1964), or Edward R. Murrow's examination of Joseph McCarthy (1954), or Arnold Palmer's victory in the 1958 Masters Tournament, or listen to radio excerpts like FDR's first "Fireside Chat" (1933) and Orson Welles's famous War of the Worlds UFO hoax (1938)? All these, plus a gazillion episodes of The Twilight Zone, I Love Lucy, and other beloved series (including numerous pilots never aired on national television), can be viewed within the starkly white walls of architect Richard Meier's neutral, contemporary museum building. Like the ritzy Beverly Hills shopping district that surrounds it, the museum is more flash than substance. Once you gawk at the celebrity and industry-honcho names adorning every hall, room, and miscellaneous area, it becomes quickly apparent that "library" would be a more fitting name for this collection, since the main attractions are requested via sophisticated computer catalogs and viewed in private consoles. Although no one sets out to spend a vacation watching TV, it can be tempting once you start browsing the archives. This West Coast branch of the venerable New York facility succeeds in treating our favorite pastime as a legitimate art form.

One Night Stay

Anonymous, San Francisco, CA, 2006-09-29

Lots of cheap college eateries right outside the motel.

The Vagabond Inn USC was only a block from the university. The room was spacious. The facilities is old and heavily used but well maintained. The bed was comfortable. Plenty of free parking, a free continental breakfast and a free-to-use internet computer in the lobby are what set the hotel apart from the competition. It is located in a noisy neighborhood, and when a semi-truck pulled into the parking lot late at night, it was very noisy. Early in the morning, the garbage truck came around, then the semi started up. We did not sleep very well.

Nice area, No hassles

Anonymous, 2006-05-28

15 minute drive on surface streets to the L.A. Fashion District. 30 minutes to Wal*Mart.

The Vagabond Inn Los Angeles-USC is in a clean, well-lit area of the main street near USC. At least a dozen fast-food and sit-down restaurants are within walking distance or a 1-minute drive, including the spacious Eat St. Grill adjacent. All these are frequented by university students, so safety was never a concern. Plenty of parking is available outside each room, and access is free 24 hours. Room doors open to the outside (rather than into a secure hall), but we never encountered any street people or unfriendlies on the premises. Our room was a spacious 2nd-floor corner overlooking the secure, heated pool. We were pleasantly surprised by the working refrigerator and microwave. Other amenities include hair-dryer, iron and board, coffee maker, and even styrofoam cups. A work table with adjustable chair is included, in addition to a sitting table with 2 chairs. Cable television includes local channels, network, pay-per-view, and movies on-demand. The free high-speed internet worked fabulously, but you must bring your own ethernet cable, and bring an extra-long one to reach the desk, because the single network port is on the nightstand between the beds. A $20 cash deposit is required to use the in-room telephone, but all toll-free calls, incoming calls, and local calls within 10 miles are absolutely free! Don't forget to ask for your remaining deposit back when you checkout.
