During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Grauman's Chinese Theatre
This is one of the world's great movie palaces and one of Hollywood's finest landmarks. The theater was opened in 1927 by impresario Sid Grauman, a brilliant promoter who's credited with originating the idea of the paparazzi-packed movie "premiere." Outrageously conceived, with both authentic and simulated Chinese embellishments, Grauman's theater was designed to impress. Original Chinese heavenly doves top the facade, and two of the theater's columns once propped up a Ming dynasty temple.Visitors by the millions flock to the theater for its famous entry court, where stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Ginger Rogers, Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and about 160 others set their signatures and hand-/footprints in concrete (a tradition started when actress Norma Talmadge accidentally stepped in wet cement during the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille's King of Kings). It's not always hands and feet: Betty Grable's shapely leg; the hoofprints of Gene Autry's horse, Champion; Jimmy Durante's and Bob Hope's trademark noses; Whoopi Goldberg's dreadlocks, George Burns's cigar, and even R2D2's wheels.
Mulholland Drive
Los Angeles is the only major city in the world divided by a mountain range, and the road on top of this range is the famous Mulholland Drive. It travels 21 miles along the peaks and canyons of Hollywood Hills and the Santa Monica mountains, separating the Los Angeles basin from the San Fernando Valley. The winding road provides amazing views of the city (particularly at night) and offers many opportunities to pull over and enjoy the view 1,400 feet above sea level.Completed in 1924, it's named after William Mulholland, the engineer of the aqueduct connecting L.A. and the Valley. Yes, there are celebrities up in them thar hills -- Marlon Brando, Kevin Costner, Barney -- but you'll never find them, as most of the mansions are well hidden. You don't need to drive the whole road to get the full effect. From Cahuenga Boulevard (near the Hollywood Bowl), take the Mulholland Drive turnoff heading west. After a few miles, you'll see the scenic view area on your left. Park at the small paved parking lot (which closes at sunset), ooh and aah over the view of the L.A. basin, and then drive a few miles farther west until you spot the other scenic view area on your right (dirt this time) overlooking the Valley. The whole trip should take you less than an hour. Tip: Don't drive here after 3pm on the weekdays -- the rush hour traffic in this area is horrible. Also, no matter what your map says, there is no Mulholland Drive exit off of U.S. 101; you have to get on Cahuenga Blvd.
Tail o' the Pup
At first glance, you might not think twice about this hot dog-shape bit of kitsch just across from the Beverly Center. But locals adored this closet-size wiener dispensary so much that when it was threatened by the developer's bulldozer, they spoke out en masse to save it. One of the last remaining examples of 1950s representational architecture, the "little dog that could" serves up an "only in L.A." experience to go with its great Baseball Special.

Great staff, food and rooms

Anonymous, Las Vegas, NV, 2007-03-12

The MOCA Geffen museum and the Japanese American Museum were two to three short blocks from the hotel. The hotel is on the edge of Japan town. A very short drive away (10 to 15 is the garment district and the jewelry district.

The New Otani had the most helpful staff I have encountered in a hotel, with the possible exception of the maid who tried to enter to clean my room at 7:30 on the moring of the day I was checking out. I wasn't checking out until noon though so her coming in that early was a waste of time. She again entered at 11:40 and I left to check out. The other staff was more than extremely helpful and I am most satisfied. The rooms were beautiful with sliding paper window screens in addition to the curtains so that there was muted daylight in the room rather than full sun (curtains open) or dark (curtains drawn). It was really pleasant. The matress was great. The bathroom plumbing may be a problem for the hotel but they were quick to send the engineers to repair the problems. (The first night it was a leaking sink (they moved me to a better room), the second room had a slow flushing toilet. Food and food service was sensational. We had a Sunday breakfast by the japanese garden which was an eating and viewing pleasure. Refills on the fresh squeezed orange juice and danish pastries to die for. Service prompt but not hovering. Love this place.

Ummm go to Little Tokyo for snacks. Superb

Very Good and clean. The area around was not as dangerous and expected and safe compared to LA downtown. 4 blocks away from Subway and there was a bus stop in front of the hotel.

The New Otani Hotel in LA

Anonymous, 2007-03-04

This hotel was close to the fashion district an.d an easy off and on hotel to the interstates. Also close to the convention center

I thought that my overall experience and stay at the hotel was good. Room service was prompt and check in was done in a timely manner. There was however, a few rocky moments when i tried to call and get a package that was waiting at the hotel for me. It seemed as if the staff was too busy to help me and i had to call back a few times in order to get the time to speak with someone in the correct department. Overall the location and service was good and i would reccommend the hotel to a friend and would stay again myself if the opportunity was there to do so.

The New Otani Hotel was not what we expected at all, we seemed to be the only english speaking customers there and the only friendly staff were the vehicle attendees. The bathroom was small and the lights kept flickering on and off, however nobody bothered to fix and the ceiling was falling apart! We asked where the nearest Mall location was and we were looked at like we were from Mars. This was the worst Hotel I have stayed at to this day, I would never recommend to anybody!!!!!

Overall a good stay

Joseph, Providence, RI, 2007-02-11

If you wanted to dine anywhere besides the hotel, it definitely helped to have a car. Most restaraunts were just a short distance form the hotel, but not in walking distance.

Was a good stay, mainly a business persons hotel. The Japanese garden was an experience and the restaraunts within the hotel were also a good experience, although the menus were a little short, the ambience of the dining experience made up for it and the service in the restaurant was up to par. The room was cozy and the views of downtown LA with the mountain range in the background was pretty neat.
