During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Museum of the American West
Located north of Downtown in Griffith Park, this is one of the country's finest and most comprehensive museums of the American West. More than 78,000 artifacts showcasing the history of the region west of the Mississippi River are intelligently displayed. Evocative exhibits illustrate the everyday lives of early pioneers, not only with antique firearms, tools, saddles, and the like, but with many hands-on displays that successfully stir the imagination and the heart. You'll find footage from Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, movie clips from the silent days, contemporary films, the works of Wild West artists, and plenty of memorabilia from Gene "The Singing Cowboy" Autry's film and TV projects. The Hall of Merchandising displays Roy Rogers bedspreads, Hopalong Cassidy radios, and other items from the collective consciousness -- and material collections -- of baby boomers. Provocative visiting exhibits (whose banners are visible from I-5) usually focus on cultural or domestic regional history. Docent-led tours are generally scheduled on Saturdays at 11am and noon. Tip: You can purchase a $12 two-site ticket that also includes entry into the Southwest Museum; it's valid for 3 months.
The Egyptian Theatre
Conceived by grandiose impresario Sid Grauman, the Egyptian Theatre is just down the street from his better-known Chinese Theatre, but it remains less altered from its original design, which was based on the then-headline-news discovery of hidden treasures in Pharaohs' tombs -- hence the hieroglyphic murals and enormous scarab decoration above the stage. Hollywood's first movie premiere, Robin Hood, starring Douglas Fairbanks, was shown here in 1922, followed by the premiere of The Ten Commandments in 1923. The building recently underwent a sensitive restoration by American Cinematheque, which now screens rare, classic, and independent films (see chapter 10 for details).
Santa Monica Pier
Piers have been a tradition in Southern California since the area's 19th-century seaside resort days. Many have long since disappeared (like Pacific Ocean Park, an entire amusement park perched on offshore pilings), and others have been shortened by battering storms and are now mere shadows (or stumps) of their former selves, but you can still get a chance to experience those halcyon days of yesteryear at world-famous Santa Monica Pier.Built in 1908 for passenger and cargo ships, the Santa Monica Pier does a pretty good job of recapturing the glory days of Southern California. The wooden wharf is now home to seafood restaurants and snack shacks, a touristy Mexican cantina, and a gaily colored turn-of-the-20th-century indoor wooden carousel (which Paul Newman operated in The Sting). Summer evening concerts, which are free and range from big band to Miami-style Latin, draw crowds, as does the small amusement area perched halfway down. Its name, Pacific Park (tel. 310/260-8744; www.pacpark.com), hearkens back to the granddaddy pier amusement park in California, Pacific Ocean Park; this updated version has a Ferris wheel, a mild-mannered roller coaster, and other rides, plus a high-tech arcade shoot-out. But anglers still head to the end to fish, and nostalgia buffs to view the photographic display of the pier's history. This is the last of the great pleasure piers, offering rides, romance, and perfect panoramic views of the bay and mountains. The pier is about a mile up Ocean Front Walk from Venice; it's a great round-trip stroll. Parking is available for $6 to $8 on both the pier deck and the beachfront nearby. Limited short-term parking is also available. For information on twilight concerts (generally held Thurs between mid-June and the end of Aug), call tel. 310/458-8900 or visit www.santamonicapier.org.

Great Location

Tom, Houston, TX, 2006-11-21

Very close t othe 405 and Sunset Blvd.

Nice hotel whose best feature was its location, and tranquil setting with lots of trees and nature. Very close to the 405, Sunset Blvd and UCLA. Room was decorated in modern earth tones and very clean. Had a refrigerator / kitchen area, and a patio outside. An extra charge of $ 22 / day was added to park the car. Staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Nice hotel, expensive parking

Christina, Minneapolis, MN, 2006-11-15

We could not find a pizza hut that would deliver to the hotel.

The hotel and room itself were very comfortable and clean. When we were there the pool was not heated. Also, you have to take a gulf cart to get to the pool area. We informed the staff who said they would check into it and get back to us, but we never heard anything after that. We thought the parking charge of $22 per day was outrageous. They had valet parking but it definitely wasn't worth the money. My husband had problems with being blocked from using the internet.

Close to UCLA

Anonymous, 2006-11-06

The Promenade is a short distance from the hotel. Westwood is a short drive from the hotel which offers shopping and dining.

My room was located down a long hallway and next to an exit. I found the door propped open. My room was not one of the recently remodeled ones and had some wear and tear issues. I have had larger rooms at this Luxe for the same amount of $$. I workout when I travel, but this Luxe does not offer adequate workout equipment. The pool is nice and the chairs are awesome!!! The music provides a nice ambiance. The Luxe is conveniently located to UCLA.

Construction Underway

Anonymous, Minneapolis, MN, 2006-04-16

The hotel was very contemporary. Supposedly a lot of celebrities stay there, however we didn't see any. Good location to restaurants, shopping.

We checked into the hotel and the clerk informed us that the pool was being refurbished but we could get passes to go swimming at UCLA. the room they gave us was right over the car port so it was very noisy and the car parkers were stationed right under our window so we couldn't open the blinds. When we complained, they gave us another room which had ants in the bed. We complained and they gave us a room with a hole in the ceiling and a bucket in the middle of the room to catch the water. Finally, we were given a jr. suite for the same price. It was lovely, however it was only 1 king bed and a rollaway cot for my daughter that wasn't as comfortable as a queen size bed we originally requested. It was especially disappointing not to have the use of a pool. The UCLA pool was a public pool and we had to pay for parking. It was quite crowded and had few lounge chairs so we had to sit on the grass (it was not what we expected of a California vacation). The location of the hotel was good. Just a few minutes from downtown Brentwood restaurants and shopping.

Met my needs, but.....

Anonymous, 2006-03-11

It is rather isolated but there is one restaurant called the Bel-Air ????? maybe Grille which is in a funky location next to a gas station but has excellent food, service, outdoor seating and you can walk there-very enjoyable.

I chose the Luxe because of the location--easy access to I-405 which was important to me. The rooms had recently been remodeled and were very clean etc., and the staff was very friendly. The negatives were that many rooms were still being remodeled so it was noisy (but that is short-term). The location is not for everyone though. It is very near the Getty Center but I usually like to be able to walk to places (bars, restaurants) when I stay in a city and this hotel is very isolated. It does sit next to the Brentwood neighborhood so if you are a jogger at least you have a nice quiet and pretty neighborhood to enjoy on your run.

Spacious accommodations

Kathy, San Francisco, CA, 2006-02-20

We chose this hotel because it is close to UCLA and we were visiting our children there.

The room is very large and comfortable, but could better touches such as softer towels and perhaps include a continental breakfast. We also had a lightbulb out in our bathroom which should have been seen by maintenance or housekeeping. They are in the process of remodeling the hotel, but i was unsure if our portion was remodeled already or not.

Tranquil, calm.

Anonymous, 2005-10-21

It was a short drive from Rodeo Drive, Robertson's Street and Santa Monica area where many high end, vintage, and trendy stores are located.

The room was larger than expected and decorated a la New York Soho Moderne, it was in neutral decor and was as a result very calming and tranquil in effect. The king size bed was well made with crisp sheets, and there were spa bathrobes available. We were vacationing but noticed many business conferences going on, and so deduced that this hotel was chosen by many for their gracious ways of promoting a comfortable setting for professional bonding. The hotel staff was cordial and helpful. We enjoyed our stay.
