During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Frederick's of Hollywood Lingerie Museum
God bless Frederick Mellinger, inventor of the push-up bra (originally known as the Rising Star). Frederick's of Hollywood opened this world-famous purple-and-pink Art Deco panty shop in 1947 and dutifully installed a small exhibition saluting all the stars of stage, screen, and television who glamorized lingerie. The collection now includes Madonna's pointy-breasted black-and-gold bustier, the bra Tony Curtis wore in his famous cross-dressing performance in Some Like It Hot, Phyllis Diller's training bra (marked "This Side Up!"), the Boxer shorts worn by Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump, and a Cher-autographed underwire bra (size 32B). Some exhibits were lost during the 1992 L.A. riots, when looters ransacked the place. Mercifully, the bra worn by Milton Berle on his 1950s TV show was saved.
Capitol Records Building
Opened in 1956, this 13-story tower, just north of the legendary intersection of Hollywood and Vine, is one of the city's most recognizable buildings. The world's first circular office building is often, but incorrectly, said to have been made to resemble a stack of 45s under a turntable stylus (it kinda does, though). Nat "King" Cole, songwriter Johnny Mercer, and other 1950s Capitol artists populate a giant exterior mural. Look down and you'll see the sidewalk stars of Capitol's recording artists (including John Lennon). In the lobby, numerous gold albums are on display. The light on the rooftop spire of the Capitol Records building flashes "H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D" in Morse code. Really, it does.
Los Angeles Zoo
The L.A. Zoo, which shares its parking lot with the Museum of the American West, has been welcoming visitors and busloads of school kids since 1966. In 1982, the zoo inaugurated a display of cuddly koalas, still one of its biggest attractions. Although it's smaller than the world-famous San Diego Zoo, the L.A. Zoo is surprisingly enjoyable and easy to fully explore. As much an arboretum as a zoo, the grounds are thick with mature shade trees from around the world that help cool the once-barren grounds, and new habitats are light-years ahead of the cruel concrete roundhouses originally used to exhibit animals (though you can't help feeling that, despite the fancy digs, all the creatures would rather be in their natural habitat). Highlights include the Chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains habitat, where visitors can see plenty of primate activity; the Red Ape Rain Forest, a natural orangutan habitat; the entertaining World of Birds show; the Pachyderm Forest (climate-controlled digs for the elephants and hippos, complete with an underwater viewing area); the new mandrills exhibit (the world's largest and most colorful baboons); and the silverback gorilla exhibit. The gargantuan Andean condor had me enthralled as well (the facility is renowned in zoological circles for the successful breeding and releasing of California condors, and occasionally it has some of these majestic and endangered birds on exhibit). The zoo's latest attraction (and one they're rightfully proud of) is the Winnick Family Children's Zoo, a fantastic and forward-thinking children's zoo that contains a petting area, exhibition animal care center, Adventure Theater storytelling and puppet show, and other kid-hip exhibits and activities. Tip: To avoid the busloads of rambunctious school kids, arrive after noon.

Location over amenities

Dont expect too much. It was merely a place to lay your head at night

The Century Wilshire could not have been more convenient as far as location. The hotel did have some things that could have been better. It seemed as if daily housekeeping was not a given, but if asked, they did have it made up. The business center computer did not work while I was there and even though it was reported each day, it never was serviced. The hotel definately needs to be refreshed, but based on other feedback before I left, I was prepared. I would stay there again, because of the price, but I could not recommend this to a friend. It felt like an old dingy apartment.

A charming older property -- This delightful older hotel in Westwood

steven, Hartford, CT

Within minutes of Santa Monica pier and Beverly Hills; and just about 30 minutes from Burbank Airport if you're flying Jet Blue. Also very close to Westfield Shopping Center at Century City and close to Santa Monica Blvd. Delightful property.

This charming hotel, albeit a little dated, is great for a business traveler or couple who are not seeking an upper upscale property. There were only three recommendations I would make...First that they consider replacing or streamlining the elevator; that they consider more secure room locks and that they consider some bright paint to spruce up the rooms and hallways. Otherwise, it's near everything, they will cook omelettes or eggs to order for breakfast and the breakfast is delightful; and the staff is warm and accommodating. I'll be back

Very friendly -- great breakfast

Anonymous, Washington, DC, 2006-03-11

Stroll around the UCLA campus and check out their music offerings before you go. The Getty Museum is just a short drive away -- great views, wonderful art, beautiful architecture -- definitely worth the trip.

My husband and I found the hotel to be a great bargain. It's in a fabulous neighborhood near UCLA and not far from the Getty Museum. Hotel staff was superb. "Old world charm" really came into play at the charming and delicious breakfast. We paid a very small price to have a delicious omelet.

Nice places a few blocks walk to U.C.L.A. area.

Could not find soda or ice machine. There was no iron/ironing board in room. Air-conditioning appeared primitive. The staff were helpful!

Try the Apple Pan for a unique, local burger and sandwich joint experience. Nothing like it anywhere.

Close to freeways, beach, Beverly Hills, UCLA and Westwood, shopping, dining. European feel, nice continental breakfast w/ambiance. Rooms not updated but comfortable. Small TV. Excellennt for the budget traveler.

Comfort

Westwood was very close and I enjoyed taking a walk to get there.

I very much like have a full kitchen... having a full kitchen allowed me to do my own shopping and it helped cut down on expenses eating out. I also was impressed with the hotel itself and the continential breakfast was excellent.

Great older Hotel

frank, Twin Falls, ID, 2005-11-04

Hollywood

This Hotel is close to UCLA and it's Hospital. As we were there for the hospital we were dis- appointed that the elevator broke down. It was sort of hard on my wife as she was there for complications with her leg. They tried to get it fixed as soon as possible but I think its alittle tired. I could have complained more but they seemed to say it came with the teritory and not to worry. Nice but could have offered some assistance. Other wise a nice stay and they bend over backwards on their contental breakfast.

Very cool centered Hotel

Matthieu, Kansas City, MO, 2005-10-17

many Movie Theatres real close (more or less) you can ask for the FOX one with the tower on top -> real cool architecture.

The pros : Pool, piano, full kitchen, free continental breakfast, separate bath and shower and their patio... The cons : only black printing in business room, parking very full at night. Now, about the location, it is excellent -> you turn left on Wilshire Blvd, you end up in Santa Monica very close to the Fair. you turn right, you cross Santa monica Blvd, and drive thru Rodeo Drive district. Go farther, you're in Hollywood !!! No restaurant in the hotel but a lot very close - about 4 blocks walking distance.
