During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Freeman House
Frank Lloyd Wright's Freeman House, built in 1924, was designed as an experimental prototype of mass-produced affordable housing. The home's richly patterned "textile-block" exterior was Wright's invention and is the most famous aspect of the home's design. Situated on a dramatic site overlooking Hollywood, Freeman House is built with the world's first glass-to-glass corner windows. Dancer Martha Graham, bandleader Xavier Cugat, art collector Galka Sheye, photographer Edward Weston, and architects Philip Johnson and Richard Neutra all lived or spent significant time at this house, which became known as an avant-garde salon. The house is currently closed for restoration; call ahead to see if it's open.
Will Rogers State Historic Park
Will Rogers State Historic Park was once Will Rogers's private ranch and grounds. Willed to the state of California in 1944, the 168-acre estate is now both a park and a historic site, supervised by the Department of Parks and Recreation. Visitors may explore the grounds, the former stables, and the 31-room house filled with the original furnishings, including a porch swing in the living room and many Native American rugs and baskets. Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, hid out here in the 1930s during part of the craze that followed the kidnap and murder of their first son. There are picnic tables, but no food is sold.Who's Will Rogers, you ask? He was born in Oklahoma in 1879 and became a cowboy in the Texas Panhandle before drifting into a Wild West show as a folksy, speechifying roper. The "cracker-barrel philosopher" performed lariat tricks while carrying on a humorous deadpan monologue on current events. The showman moved to Los Angeles in 1919, where he become a movie actor as well as the author of numerous books detailing his down-home "cowboy philosophy."
Mission San Fernando
In the late 18th century, Franciscan missionaries established 21 missions up the California coast, from San Diego to Sonoma. Each uniquely beautiful mission was built 1 day's trek from the next, along a path known as El Camino Real ("the Royal Road"), remnants of which still exist. The missions' construction marked the beginning of European settlement of California and the displacement of the Native American population. The two L.A.-area missions are located in the valleys that took their names: the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley. A third mission, San Juan Capistrano, is located in Orange County (see chapter 11).Established in 1797, Mission San Fernando once controlled more than 1 1/2 million acres, employed 1,500 Native Americans, and boasted more than 22,000 head of cattle and extensive orchards. The fragile adobe mission complex was destroyed several times but was always faithfully rebuilt with low buildings surrounding grassy courtyards. The aging church was replaced in the 1940s and again in the 1970s after an earthquake. The Convento, a 250-foot-long colonnaded structure dating from 1810, is the compound's oldest remaining building. Some of the mission's rooms, including the old library and the private salon of the first bishop of California, have been restored to their late-18th-century appearance. A half-dozen padres and many hundreds of Shoshone Indians are buried in the adjacent cemetery.

Good place

Front desk staff was lethargic, at best, during checkin. Hotel was pleasantly funky, and the little restaurant on site (Tart) was really fun.

Surprisingly nice!

Ask for a room on the third floor. The flooring in the rooms is laminate, and if you are in a room below someone, you will be able to hear them walking. Another tip is to ask for a room as far away from the elevator as possible, so you don't have to listen to people talking when they get off of the elevator.

I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this place was. I was in town for business in the Wilshire district, and there weren't many places to stay nearby. The rooms are very comfortable, with good beds, nice towels, and a frig in the room. Right across the street from the Grove and Farmers Market, you have a lot of choices for dining and shopping. The staff was very friendly. The only thing missing was a dresser with drawers to put clothing that you wouldn't hang in the closet, so you have to leave it in your suitcase. The onsite restaurant is just okay, go across the street for better dining.

California Country

the farmer's market is across the street for great food shopping. adorable boutiques right around the corner as well.

Farmer's Daughter was a great hotel to spend time at. The staff was always very helpful and acted appreciative of my business. The rooms were always clean and made me feel like I was in my own room as opposed to a hotel room. I really thought the bed was amazing. Having the valet was my favorite because parking in Los Angeles is horrible but the available parking was so convenient and I never had to wait.

The Grove is just across the street!

We enjoyed our stay at the Farmer's Daughter. It was just right...clean...convenient ....professional staff.....very good value. My daughter lives in a small apartment in Hollywood so I have stayed in lots of hotels when I visit her. The Farmer's Daughter was the BEST!

This hotel is right across the street from CBS studios

I was pleasently surprised by the trendy little hotel adjacent to the Farmer's market and the Grove very close to everything..the parking was expensive though valet at $12.00 a day.

There a plenty of great places to eat. Bring an appetite.

The rooms were clean and comfortable. A short walk away is a great upscale shopping center and the farmer's market. There is a movie theatre in the center.

Great location

If walking is important to you then this is a good location. I like to walk and can recommend this property based on that alone.

Being so close to places you can walk such as the Farmer's Market and interesting places to eat makes their location a great choice. We also liked the proximity to the Hollywood Bowl, and the museums. It is also near public transportation if you elect not to use your car. The room was adequate although we would have preferred to have a comforatable chair rather than having to sit on the bed to read. We hope to return some day and explore more of the area.

convenient for my purposes

Daniel, St Louis, MO, 2005-08-26

lots of restaurants and shopping

I stayed here because friends and I went to the Price is Right and it was the closest hotel. I thought their theme was a hoot. They took an old motel and redid it in a country theme which I found very humorous. It's not the Ritz, but it is comfortable, clean and convenient to CBS studios. The staff is very curtious and helpful and fun.
