Fisherman's Wharf
Few cities in America are as adept at wholesaling their historical sites as San Francisco, which has converted Fisherman's Wharf into one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. Unless you come really early in the morning, you won't find any traces of the traditional waterfront life that once existed here; the only fishing going on around here is for tourists' dollars.Originally called Meigg's Wharf, this bustling strip of waterfront got its present moniker from generations of fishers who used to base their boats here. Today, the bay has become so polluted with toxins that bright yellow placards warn against eating fish from the waters. A small fleet of fewer than 30 fishing boats still operates from here, but basically Fisherman's Wharf has been converted into one long shopping mall that stretches from Ghirardelli Square at the west end to PIER 39 at the east.Accommodating a total of 350 boats, two marinas flank PIER 39 and house the Blue & Gold bay sightseeing fleet. In recent years, some 600 California sea lions have taken up residence on the adjacent floating docks. Until they abandon their new playground, which seems more and more unlikely, these playful, noisy creatures (some nights you can hear them all the way from Washington Sq.) are one of the best free attractions on the wharf. Docent-led programs, offered at PIER 39 on weekends from 11am to 5pm, teach visitors about the range, habitat, and adaptability of the California sea lion.Some people love Fisherman's Wharf; others can't get far enough away from it. Most agree that, for better or for worse, it has to be seen at least once in your lifetime.

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park
Shaped like an Art Deco ship, the Maritime Museum is filled with sailing, whaling, and fishing lore. Remarkably good exhibits include intricate model craft and scrimshaw. The collection of shipwreck photographs and historic marine scenes includes an 1851 snapshot of hundreds of abandoned ships, deserted en masse by crews dashing off to participate in the gold rush. Beautifully carved, brightly painted wooden figureheads from old windjammers line the walls. Two blocks east, at the park's Hyde Street Pier, are several historic ships, now moored and open to the public.The Balclutha, one of the last surviving square-riggers and the handsomest vessel in San Francisco Bay, was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1886 and carried grain from California at a near-record speed of 300 miles a day. The ship is now completely restored. Kids can climb into the bunking quarters, visit the "slop chest" ("galley" to you, matey), and read the sea chanteys (clean ones only) that decorate the walls.The 1890 Eureka still carries a cargo of nostalgia for San Franciscans. It was the last of 50 paddle-wheel ferries that regularly plied the bay; it made its final trip in 1957. Restored to its original splendor at the height of the ferryboat era, the side-wheeler is loaded with deck cargo, including antique cars and trucks.The black-hulled, three-masted C. A. Thayer, built in 1895, was crafted for the lumber trade and carried logs felled in the Pacific Northwest to the carpentry shops of California. Unfortunately, it's undergoing renovation and isn't slated to return until 2006.Other historic ships docked here include the tiny two-masted Alma, one of the last scow schooners to bring hay to the horses of San Francisco; the Hercules, a huge 1907 oceangoing steam tug; and the Eppleton Hall, a side-wheel tugboat built in England in 1914 to operate on London's River Thames.At the pier's small-boat shop, visitors can follow the restoration progress of historic boats from the museum's collection. It's behind the maritime bookstore on your right as you approach the ships.

The Cannery
The Cannery was built in 1907 as a fruit-canning plant and was converted into a mall in the 1960s. It contains 30-plus shops, a ceramic studio and gallery, and several restaurants, including Jack's Cannery Bar (tel. 415/931-6400). Vendors' stalls and sidewalk cafes occupy the courtyard amid a grove of century-old olive trees and, weather permitting, street performers are usually out in force, entertaining tourists. Note: This is a tourist destination that many locals avoid.

Galleria upscale mall next to hotel.

very good location, near financial district,two blochs from union sq. & china town and north beach.Great for upscale shopping and dining. Standerd room was small, but was updated.Shower was small and needs more work.But the price and location was worth it. I would stay there again.

Location, location, location

Near the Union Square shopping district. A lot of upscale stores within a few blocks.

The Galleria Park Hotel is in the Financial District--one of the best areas in which to stay in San Francisco! My husband and I decided to visit this lovely city without a car and, indeed, this is the hotel in which to stay. I had asked for a referral for dinner the first night and gave us an excellent one. The hotel is being remodeled and, even though we stayed in one of the rooms that had not been done yet, it was still clean and comfortable. The room was quite small, but the room was quiet and since we were on the go the entire time, the size didn't really matter. The only flaw was on Sunday morning, when we were about to leave. My husband asked the man at the front desk about where we could go to eat (we weren't real happy about the breakfast selections at the restaurant on site), and he only received a curt I don't know. Later on, he asked for some change for a $20 and received a curt I don't have any without the clerk even looking. Since we were paying guests (and he knew this since we were checking out at the time), it would have been nice for him to show a bit more courtesy. Overall, however, it was a nice experience.

Good Business Amenities

Lots of shops right in that area. Straight up the hill was Chinatown for different types of shops.

Immediate access to the internet on computers in the lobby helped me out on this trip. Staff was friendly with greetings when you entered and left the hotel. The room was comfortable, they are remodeling, so early morning you would start to hear the hammering and tools.

Bring good walking shoes. The map will not show you where the hills are! There are some great resautrants and shops further up Sutter St, but it si all hp hill to get there, and down hill on the way home can be just as hard on the feet and legs.

The Park Galleria Hotel is one of the many boutique hotels that have been restored back into working order over the last ten years in central downtown San Francisco. This hotel is a period piece with lots of old world charm, and at the same time is very comfortable and well taken care of. The room was a decent size, and the staff were very helpful. The bathroom set-up was unusual, but quite workable. The toilet and shower/tub were in a little room of their own, and the sink/vanity area was in a closet like room. Both opened onto the main bedroom. The vanity area did include a hair dryer, which was a modern convenience greatly appreciated. There was also a sizable walk in closet for clothes. The room also included a TV and refrigerator, but no coffee maker. The business center was a desk in the lobby with a couple of computers, which seemed to work well. There may have been wireless hook-ups in the rooms, but I didn't use this feature. Coffee was served all morning in the lobby, and there was a small restaurant adjacent to the hotel that a lobby entrance from the hotel istelf. The area is full of great restaurants and coffe shops, so eating is not a problem in this part of town. It was also a very close walk to the trolly service for transportation, Union Square and the Bart, and taxis were easy to catch from this location. Altogether a lovely experience, and I would stay there again.

Needs Update

I know that back in the day this was a great and lovely hotel, the staff is very friendly and works hard to overcome the lack of amenities and the general disrepair of the rooms. I was shocked that the guest rooms were so dingy and dank. I had 2 rooms in the hotel and there were numerous items that did not work or were missing. Again Great Staff, Great Location, Needs a Real Good Freshening!

It was OK

The staff was great at check -in prompt and friendly. Our first room was an inner facing room with a view of roof vents. The carpet had a hole in it at the bathroom door from cleaning fluids used on the floor tile. The air handler did not work. I notified the front desk before going out at about 11:00. We were told that a someone would fix it while we were out. Upon return at about 7:00 we discovered that it had not been dealt with. The front desk clerk spent some time pushing the same ON button I pushed and decided that yes it really did not work. We were moved to a smaller room across the hall with an air handler that did come on but did not cool the air. No matter because the curtains cover the air handler competely so a decision had to be made between cool air or street lights. It probably still isn't working. The iron in the room spit black stuff all over our clothes when we tried to get ready for dinner but the bar soap in the room did a good job of getting it off. They desk did offer to bring me a different iron. The hotel was conveniently located, the staff gave good directions, and our bedding was clean so that was good even if you couldn't get the bathroom door open all the way because it hit the chair. I didn't hate it but I would not recommend this place to someone I like and I don't think I would choose to stay there again.

Very close to all the biog stores

The hotel is conveniently located near downtown, Chinatown and within walking distance of convention center. I was very pleased with the internet access- never had a problem getting on or staying on. A colleague needed to join me and the hotel was not able to accommodate us with a two bedroom room. Even for one person, the room was small. The bathroom was functional but could could be updated.

bring comfortable shoes because within walking distance of union square and shopping

reasonably priced for the location at union square and chinatown. dont expect a good nite sleep with the traffic, noise, construction. even the beds were un comfortable. complimentary wine tasting in the evening. bring your computer for wireless internet unless you like to wait to use the hotels two computers for guests. only one of the computer works...

The Galleria Park Hotel was an excellent choice, great location, wonderful staff and service. I highly recommend this hotel of staying in the Union Square area of SF. 5 star service at a 3 star price.
