Hotel Rex

The Hotel Rex was inspired by the San Francisco art and literary salons of the 1920's and 30's. Vibrant and alive, the clubby lobby surrounds guests with distinctive period furnishings, walls of antiquarian books, and an exceptional collection of exotic objects and original portraits and murals. Literary events regularly unfold in the lobby bar, and the hotel's new Caf? Andr?e is an enchanting blend of a Northern California caf? and authentic French bistro. Guestrooms are decorated in a palate of Provencal colors and feature the work of local artisans as well as an impressive menu of modern amenities. The Hotel Rex has recently reopened after completing its spectacular million-dollar renovation.

During your Anaheim vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park
Shaped like an Art Deco ship, the Maritime Museum is filled with sailing, whaling, and fishing lore. Remarkably good exhibits include intricate model craft and scrimshaw. The collection of shipwreck photographs and historic marine scenes includes an 1851 snapshot of hundreds of abandoned ships, deserted en masse by crews dashing off to participate in the gold rush. Beautifully carved, brightly painted wooden figureheads from old windjammers line the walls. Two blocks east, at the park's Hyde Street Pier, are several historic ships, now moored and open to the public. The Balclutha, one of the last surviving square-riggers and the handsomest vessel in San Francisco Bay, was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1886 and carried grain from California at a near-record speed of 300 miles a day. The ship is now completely restored. Kids can climb into the bunking quarters, visit the "slop chest" ("galley" to you, matey), and read the sea chanteys (clean ones only) that decorate the walls. The 1890 Eureka still carries a cargo of nostalgia for San Franciscans. It was the last of 50 paddle-wheel ferries that regularly plied the bay; it made its final trip in 1957. Restored to its original splendor at the height of the ferryboat era, the side-wheeler is loaded with deck cargo, including antique cars and trucks. The black-hulled, three-masted C. A. Thayer, built in 1895, was crafted for the lumber trade and carried logs felled in the Pacific Northwest to the carpentry shops of California. Unfortunately, it's undergoing renovation and isn't slated to return until 2006.Other historic ships docked here include the tiny two-masted Alma, one of the last scow schooners to bring hay to the horses of San Francisco; the Hercules, a huge 1907 oceangoing steam tug; and the Eppleton Hall, a side-wheel tugboat built in England in 1914 to operate on London's River Thames. At the pier's small-boat shop, visitors can follow the restoration progress of historic boats from the museum's collection. It's behind the maritime bookstore on your right as you approach the ships.
California Palace of the Legion of Honor
Designed as a memorial to California's World War I casualties, this neoclassical structure is an exact replica of the Legion of Honor Palace in Paris, right down to the inscription HONNEUR ET PATRIE above the portal. The Legion of Honor reopened in late 1995, after a 2-year, $35-million renovation and seismic upgrading. The exterior's grassy expanses, cliff-side paths, and incredible view of the Golden Gate and downtown make this an absolute must-visit attraction before you even get in the door. The inside is equally impressive. The museum's permanent collection covers 4,000 years of art and includes paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from Europe, as well as international tapestries, prints, and drawings. The chronological display of 4,000 years of ancient and European art includes one of the world's finest collections of Rodin's sculptures. The sunlight Legion Café offers indoor and outdoor seating at moderate prices. Plan to spend 2 or 3 hours here.
Haas-Lilienthal House
Of the city's many gingerbread Victorians, this handsome Queen Anne house is one of the most flamboyant. The 1886 structure features all the architectural frills of the period, including dormer windows, flying cupolas, ornate trim, and winsome turret. The elaborately styled house is now a museum, its rooms fully furnished with period pieces. The Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage maintains the house and offers docent-led tours. The 1-hour tours (the only way to see the house) start every 20 to 30 minutes.

My review of Hotel Rex

Anonymous, Washington, DC, 2006-12-16

The hotel is a short, but uphill walk from the Powell Street BART/MUNI station.

A quiet, smallish hotel ideally situated just a couple of blocks from Union Square and major stores, and ten minutes walk from the Convention Center. Comfortable room if a little small, though fine for one person. The lack of a coffee maker was the only major inconvenience, plus a toilet seat that needed to held by hand in the upright position. I would certainly choose to stay again, although perhaps not at the regular rate which is comparable to that of the major chain hotels with more ammenities though less character.

Good Place To Stay

quincy, Orange County, CA, 2006-11-25

Waliking distance to Union Square, Nob Hill, China Town, and restaurants.

Overall my experience at Hotel Rex was good. If you drive there as we did, you must valet park, but there was no one standing there. So you have to either park at the curb or double park and take your keys inside. The rooms were small, but nice and clean. Love the business center and they have complimentary coffee in the lobby bar area in the mornings, but swiftly wisk it away at 9 AM! Overall good location, nice hotel.

Godawful

gail, Rochester, NY, 2006-11-07

The hotel is twice the price and half as nice as the hotel next door. It desperately needs to be redecorated and the room was TINY- the queen-size bed was pushed against the wall and there was no place for a single piece of luggage and I mean NO place. And I consider an ice machine to be mandatory in a USA hotel. In short - it stinks. Oh and try to get a cup of "complimentary" coffee in the morning - what a challenge that was!

Beautiful Boutique Hotel!

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-08-28

Late-night diner just a few doors down is the best place for a midnight snack or great diner meal. The garlic fries and authentic chocolate cokes are a must. For those with an eye for design should definitely stop by the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design just right next door to the hotel.

The Hotel Rex was a beautiful hotel right in the heart of Union Square. Its very close to all the great sites in San Francisco. The staff is very kind. The rooms are small, but very comfortable. The complimentary glass of wine for all guests between 5-6pm is a great plus. My husband and I will forever return to Hotel Rex when we visit San Francisco.

Great Romantic Get-Away

woods, 2006-08-19

1. Best tasting restaurants within a short walk, great place for breakfast or lunch right on corner. 2. Historical exhibition within walking distance and if movies are your thing, great movie house is same area. 3. There is no lack of things to do for both children and adults.

The Hotel Rex was recommended to us by my daughter and her husband and what they said it was...IN WAS! The rooms are small but the ambiance and coziness is what you expect in this type of hotel. The room was exceptionally neat, well appointed and clean; housekeeping was courtious and accommodating; the Front Desk was superior and one thing that was noticable is the fact they remembered who you were each time you came into contact with them; the location was great...good for anyting you wanted to do or see, and great restaurants and sights we were interested in were within walking distance or a short drive away. What could have been more perfect for a great romantic get-away weekend. Just a point in fact, it was so nice we decided to stay an extra night (and no hassel or frustration from the Front Desk). We are already looking forward to our next trip!

Lovely decor in the heart of the city

Richard, Boston, MA, 2006-07-27

World famous pancakes just a short walk. Also, group runs at Niketown every Wednesday.

The Rex is tucked amidst the bustle of Union Square. The lobby is welcoming as are the staff who are polite and aim to please. The first floor sitting area offers a quiet atmosphere for drinks or just a space to simply recharge for a night on the town, which happens to be just steps from the Rex. This area boasts proximity to the arts and theatre district as well as a great breakfast joint. Of course, shopping and other comforts of Union Square are not far off. The room itself was small but elegant and private. The linens and toiletries were excellent and the upkeep was impeccable. A small elevator gave the hotel a sense of closeness of its guests, but the upscale decor and tasteful woodwork gave the rooms a private, romantic feel. Terrifically amiable staff added to a simply grand experience.

No Less Than Perfect

Corinne, Seattle, WA, 2006-07-22

Location was perfect...close to main cable car line, Chinatown, Union Square, restaurants and Retail Heaven.

The Hotel Rex was EXACTLY what we were looking for! Charming and historic! Loved our brightly colored and artsy room decor, our fire-escape balcony perfect for morning coffee, our reasonably-priced honor bar offerings, and the complimentary wine at Happy Hour in the cool vintage library-themed lounge. Staff was awesome, helpful, and available at all times. We'll be back!

Friendly, helpful staff

Tom, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-07-06

There are lots of eating places nearby. Look around.

It is a clean, comfortable hotel with friendly, helpful staff. I found a couple of small problems (like a burnt-out light bulb) and they had someone in the room immediately to fix it. The air conditioning and heating are tricky to adjust. The hotel is very centrally located for walking to many sites. There is a gourmet restaurant through a connecting door. It had very good food but relatively high prices and small portions. There is valet parking, but be advised that there is a charge for the service and a substantial daily parking fee.
