During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Giant Dipper Roller Coaster
A local landmark for almost 80 years, the Giant Dipper is one of two surviving fixtures from the original Belmont Amusement Park (the other is The Plunge swimming pool). After sitting dormant for 15 years, the vintage wooden roller coaster, with more than 2,600 feet of track and 13 hills, underwent extensive restoration and reopened in 1991. If you're in the neighborhood (especially with older kids), it's worth a stop, but adults may find the whole experience a bit too spine-rattling. You must be at least 50 inches tall to ride the roller coaster. You can also ride on the Giant Dipper's neighbor, the Liberty Carousel ($2), and other carny-style rides (unlimited ride wristband $17).
Maritime Museum
his unique museum consists of a quartet of classic ships, led by the full-rigged merchant vessel Star of India (1863), whose impressive masts are an integral part of the San Diego cityscape. The ship is a National Historic Landmark and the world's oldest ship that still goes to sea; in her day, the Star sailed around the globe 21 times, and carried salmon fishermen to Alaska and British emigrants to New Zealand. The gleaming white San Francisco-Oakland steam-powered ferry Berkeley (1898), worked round-the-clock to carry people to safety following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake; you'll find a museum with fine ship models on display. There's also the elegant Medea (1904), one of the world's few remaining large steam yachts, and Pilot (1914), which was San Diego Bay's official pilot boat for 82 years. You can board and tour each vessel; allow an hour for your visit.A new addition to the collection is the Californian, a 130-foot replica of the 1848 cutter C.W. Lawrence; the majestic ship is used for day and weekend sails. In July and August you can watch movies aboard the Star of India.
San Diego Natural History Museum
This museum focuses on the flora, fauna, and mineralogy of Southern and Baja California. Kids marvel at the animals they find here, including live snakes, tarantulas, and turtles. As a binational museum, research is done on both sides of the border and most exhibits are bilingual. You can see them all in about half an hour. Call or check the museum's website for a current schedule of special visiting exhibits. There's a 300-seat large-format movie theater, and two films are included in the price of admission.

Overpriced for value but convenient location

Convenient to stay if going to Seaworld.

This hotel was good only for the reason that it was close to SeaWorld.

Walls are way, way , way too thin!!!

tony, 2006-04-30

I have never stayed in a room at a hotel with such THIN WALLS! We could hear or neighbors' conversations, their phone, their sexual intercourse and plans for breakfast. If you stay here keep in mind you won't have ANY privacy. It ruined what otherwise would have been a great trip. I don't see how they can fix this...

Great view but the ongoing renovation was a pain

Gwen, Durham/Raleigh, NC, 2006-03-28

Sea World San Diego is very close and it's also close to airport, downtown attractions and Old Town San Diego.

We liked the location and view in the hotel however we met friends there and they were stuck with a room that had a balcony that was being renovated and was unusuable---they were not notified that this would be the case. Part of the time the pool was off limits for an unknown reason. I wish they would have told us it would be out of commission as that was the only day I tried to use it! The restuarant was not good. It has the distinction of being the only place I have ever sent back my breakfast!

My review of Hyatt Regency Islandia

Anonymous, Memphis, TN, 2005-12-18

Make sure you rent a car.

The staff was very courteous and helpful. I would have liked to have known that the main dining faclity was closed for special events during the holiday season. The view was fantastic from our tower room.

In Need of Improvement

steve, Kahului, HI, 2005-11-20

This hotel is in need of some modernization. The facility is dated outside and in. The amenities were substandard and the representation of the amenities a little deceptive. It was indicated that all rooms have mini-bars, not one in the hotel, we were told, had one. All in all the rooms were poorly maintained for a Hyatt Regency It was between that hotel and the W downtown, obvious difference in price, but we thought it was due to it being out of the city. Which was perfect for us as we were going to a concert less than a mile from the Hyatt. Dissatisfied with experience.
