During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Botanical Building and Lily Pond
This serene park within the park is one of my favorite hideouts. Ferns, orchids, impatiens, begonias, and other plants -- about 2,100 tropical and flowering varieties, plus rotating exhibits -- are sheltered beneath a domed lath house. The graceful 250-foot-long building, part of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, is one of the world's largest wood lath structures, and emerged from a complete renovation in 2002. Kids love the "touch and smell" garden and the smelly bog of carnivorous plants. The lily pond out front attracts sun worshipers, painters, and street entertainers.
Old Town State Historic Park
Dedicated to re-creating the early life of the city from 1821 to 1872, this is where San Diego's Mexican heritage shines brightest. The community was briefly Mexico's informal capital of the California territory; the Stars and Stripes were finally raised over Old Town in 1846. Seven of the park's 20 structures are original, including homes made of adobe; the rest are reconstructed. The park's headquarters is at the Robinson-Rose House, 4002 Wallace St., where you can pick up a map and peruse a model of Old Town as it looked in 1872. Among the park's attractions are La Casa de Estudillo, which depicts the living conditions of a wealthy family in 1872; and Seeley Stables, named after A. L. Seeley, who ran the stagecoach and mail service in these parts from 1867 to 1871. The stables have two floors of wagons, carriages, stagecoaches, and other memorabilia, including washboards, slot machines, and hand-worked saddles. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, costumed park volunteers reenact life in the 1800s with cooking and crafts demonstrations, a working blacksmith, and parlor singing. Free 1-hour walking tours leave weekdays at 11am, and Saturday-Sunday at 2pm, from the Robinson-Rose House. Note that on weekdays throughout the school year, Old Town buzzes with fourth-graders.
Reuben H. Fleet Science Center
A must-see for kids of any age is this tantalizing collection of interactive exhibits and rides designed to provoke the imagination and teach scientific principles. The Virtual Zone includes Deep Sea, a motion simulator ride that lurches you into a virtual ocean floor, plus two different virtual reality attractions with a scientific bent. The Fleet also houses a 76-foot-high IMAX Dome Theater that shows films so realistic that ocean footage can actually give you motion sickness! And in 2001, the Fleet unveiled a spiffy new planetarium simulator powered by computer graphics. Planetarium shows are the first Wednesday of each month ($7 adults, $6 kids age 3-12, $6 seniors). The gift shop features an inspired collection of toys, gadgets, and clever souvenirs.

Nice pool; front desk hassle

Roland, Oakland, CA, 2006-07-05

Note: The restaurant next door serves enormous portions of Italian food. Perfect if you are hungry.

The room included a kitchenette, and the pool and jacuzzi were nice. I would stay there again

Stay away

Jim, San Francisco, CA, 2006-06-13

Even if cost is your main criteria I would stay away from this hotel. The pool was not clean and the "breakfast" was laughable. It is not close to anything and the closest "attraction" (Old Town) was a 15 minute freeway ride away.

Smaller bed or traffic noise, you choose?

stephen, Tucson, AZ, 2005-08-14

Be careful and check the temperature setting in the refrigerator . . . we did not notice our refrigerator was set to the coldest setting . . . and some of the deliceous cantalopes we purchased during out stay were frozen solid when we were repacking the ice chest just prior to check-out. The frig felt cool when we first opened it, but we never felt it was necessary to change the temperature sett

We stayed two nights and enjoyed are time here. Shortly after check-in we realized our bed was a queen rather than the advertised king. Upon calling the office we were told we could be moved to a room with either two queens or one king but it would be on the noisy side of the hotel (I8 traffic side). We had checked in relatively early and were given this particular room with the non-standard bed configuration. The hotel's position was we could either accept the non-standard bed or deal with traffic noise from the Interstate. I was shocked that the hotel was warning us about the noise, and then forcing us to choose between two negative outcomes. We decided to keep our room with the smaller bed because we were running a half marathon the next morning and did not want traffic noise keeping us awake. Other than getting a smaller bed than advertised, our room was clean, quiet, and convenient to parking. Having prepaid our room before arrival, at check-out I mentioned we had made a couple of local phones calls (I think billed $0.45 each) and wanted to pay for the calls before leaving . . . the hotel said they would cover the calls and there was no additional money owed. Overlooking this small phone usage fee may have been due to an extremely busy lobby at the time of checkout.

Great location for our needs

Linda, Hartford, CT, 2005-08-11

Found some two great places to eat very closeby. Take Alvarado Canyon to Fairmount, which becomes Mission Gorge Road and you will find Coco's and Black Angus. Coco's had great breakfast, lunch or dinner at reasonable prices, including a low-sugar dessert for the diabetic. Black Angus is a super steak house with all sorts of beef, chicken and surf/turf options; great food but a bit more pricey

Days Inn Mission Valley is easily accessible from the major highways and is located less than two miles from our San Diego destination. The room was comfortable, bed was firm enough and it was nice to have a full kitchen for our convenience, though we only made use of the refrigerator and sink. However, there were no dishes in the kitchen anyway; not sure who brings their own dishes to a hotel. Decor was a little garrish and the bathroom could use a little ceiling repair. We didn't use the pool and jacuzzi, but many families seemed to enjoy it. Having an in-house laundromat was very helpful for longer stay. Overall it met our needs, location & price were good and we would return there.
