During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Hollywood Entertainment Museum
Initially intended to be a cornerstone of Hollywood Boulevard renewal, this 33,000-square-foot facility was plagued by internal politicking and faulty architecture long before it opened in 1996. Once you find its awkward subterranean entrance, you'll enter a seriously unkitschy museum devoted to the entertainment arts. On display are highlights from a treasure-trove collection of original sets and props from nearly a century of film, TV, and radio. For example, you can pull up a stool at the complete Cheers bar (look for where the stars carved their initials in the bar during the final episode) or sit in the captain's chair of the original set from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The best part is a series of interactive demonstration rooms that teach various tricks of filmmaking; visitors can create Foley soundtracks for a movie segment, test their skills at digital editing, and try out other fun, educational procedures. Fans of the defunct Max Factor Museum of Beauty will be happy to learn that the collection from Hollywood's premier motion-picture cosmetic designer is shown here -- antique makeup pots, glamour photos, and superstar toupees intact. If you're still not satiated, sign up for the studio back-lot tour to learn all about the film-making process.
Museum of Tolerance
The Museum of Tolerance is designed to expose prejudices, bigotry, and inhumanity while teaching racial and cultural tolerance. Since its opening in 1993, it's hosted 3.5 million visitors from around the world, including King Hussein of Jordan and the Dalai Lama. It's located in the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an institute founded by the legendary Nazi-hunter. While the Holocaust figures prominently here, this is not just a Jewish museum -- it's an academy that broadly campaigns for a live-and-let-live world. Tolerance is an abstract idea that's hard to display, so most of this $50 million museum's exhibits are high-tech and conceptual in nature. Fast-paced interactive displays are designed to touch the heart as well as the mind, and engage everyone from heads of state to the MTV generation.
L.A. Central Library
This is one of L.A.'s early architectural achievements and the third-largest library in the United States. The city rallied to save the library when arson nearly destroyed it in 1986; the triumphant restoration has returned much of its original splendor. Working in the early 1920s, architect Bertram G. Goodhue employed the Egyptian motifs and materials popularized by the discovery of King Tut's tomb, and combined them with a more modern use of concrete block to great effect. Walking tours are the best way to explore this old beauty; they're led Monday through Friday at 12:30pm, Saturday at 11am and 2pm, and Sunday at 2pm. Warning: Parking in this area can involve a heroic effort. Try visiting on the weekend and using the Flower Street parking entrance; the library will validate your ticket, and you can escape for only $2.
