During your Phoenix vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Huhugam Heritage Center
Although this architectural gem adjacent to the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort was not fully open when I visited, it did have a small exhibit on ancient Native American trading trails through the desert. However, the main reason to visit this new facility operated by the Pima and Maricopa tribes is not only to learn about these tribe's culture, but to admire the fascinating architecture and ethnobotanical garden. The center complex is built within a huge berm that was designed to resemble a giant pot buried in the ground.
Desert Botanical Garden
Located in Papago Park adjacent to the Phoenix Zoo and devoted exclusively to cacti and other desert plants, this botanic garden displays more than 20,000 plants from all over the world. The Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Trail is the state's best introduction to ethnobotany (human use of plants) in the Southwest. Along the trail are interactive displays that demonstrate how Native Americans once used wild and cultivated plants. You can make a yucca-fiber brush and practice grinding corn and mesquite beans. At the Center for Desert Living, there are demonstration gardens and an energy- and water-conservation research house. On the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Trail, you'll find an ever-changing palette of colorful wildflowers throughout much of the year. If you come late in the day, you can stay until after dark and see night-blooming flowers and dramatically lit cacti. A cafe on the grounds serves good food and makes a great lunch spot. In spring and fall, there are also concerts in the garden. In early December, during Las Noches de las Luminarias, the gardens are lit at night by luminarias (candles inside small bags).
The Phoenix Zoo
Forget about polar bears and other cold-climate creatures; this zoo focuses its attention primarily on animals that come from climates similar to that of the Phoenix area (although the rainforest exhibit is a definite exception). Most impressive of the displays are the African savanna and the baboon colony. The Southwestern exhibits are also of interest, as are the giant Galápagos tortoises. All animals are kept in naturalistic enclosures, and what with all the palm trees and tropical vegetation, the zoo sometimes manages to make you forget that this really is the desert.

Comfortable and Quiet

James, Durham/Raleigh, NC

The golf course is great and the guest discount is reasonable. The on site restaurant for lunch is very good.

We had a one bedroom condo and it was very comfortaqble and quiet. The fast internet service was a plus but the location on the only connection (ie. lamp table next to sofa in living room) was not comfortable. The connection would be better placed near the table in dining area. The seperate tub and shower areas were a real plus. The televisions in both the bedroom and living room with their own DVD/CD players worked out great for those with different viewing preferences. The location of the Resort is a ways from shopping and the pool was under repair while we were there. It would probably have been too cold to use had it been available. The condo was very well maintained and the service was excellent.Very friendly staff.

great if you are over 55 and into golf

Ron, Denver, CO, 2007-02-15

Nothing was close by.

I was in Phoenix for an intensive wilderness recertification and needed a different hotel. This one had no room service, and was geared to folks who were on a golf vacation . Nothing was open when I needed it. Overpriced and underseved.

Older Rooms

John, Milwaukee, WI, 2006-03-10

Great golf and food within a couple miles.

This hotel was nice with a great view of the golf course. However, the room was dated. The cupboards and sheets looked out of style as well as the comforter. The shower and bathroom was top notch, as well at the view. All in all I thought it was a nice resort.

Perfect location, staff helpful in getting you around

Anonymous, Newark, NJ, 2005-09-22

Some very reasonable steak houses in the immediate area with great prices, food, views and short driving distance.

The Legacy is a great place for a golfing vacation and the location is ideal to be in and around Phoenix/Scottsdale. Off the beaten path yet near all major roads. A real find. Rooms are very clean, well kept, and provide everything you need to stay comfortably for days. Happy we found it.
