Long a favorite of tourists and Alaskans, The Van Gilder Hotel is a National Historic Landmark built in 1916, which has been tastefully restored to reflect its early Alaska history. You will find the Van Gilder a quiet, non-smoking, impeccably clean and comfortable inn. Brass beds and period antiques allow guests to enjoy the authentic Victorian charm of an early century hotel. For your comfort we also feature modern amenities such as in-room phones, cable TV and private baths. The convenient location of The Van Gilder in downtown Seward allows you access to many area attractions: the Sealife Center, the Seward Museum of History and Art, local gift shops and restaurants, and the waterfront. Other area attractions include Kenai Fjords National Park, Exit Glacier, as well as many fishing and recreational opportunities found in Resurrection Bay.
Most recent user reviewsScore 4 out of 5 Excellent Location Suzanne, 2005-07-05 We visit Seward every year to run in the July 4th Mt Marathon race. You could not ask for a better location!! The Van Gilder is right at the race start. The room was clean and bright. The building is a historical landmark and is well maintained, but it is still old. If you like Victorian[?] well preserved places- then this is the hotel for you! There is no elevator. There was only 1 bedside table, so I used my suitcase on my side. There are no screens and no air conditioning, but the bugs weren't too bad, and there is a nice breeze. There is a complete kitchen stocked with coffee/ tea/ hot chocolate fixings. There is also a large fridge, stove [w/pans] and microwave which are great for heating leftovers, people on a budget, or families. There was an issue with whether I had been charged a deposit when I made the reservation, and I still have to investigate to make sure I wasn't double charged, but the hotel personnel were quite friendly and apologetic about any inconvenience. The house keeping *staff* are up early [9ish] and they are not quiet- but this should not be a problem unless you want to sleep in! :) They are efficient, and someone double checks to make sure the rooms are cleaned/ set up as required. I would definitely stay here again because the location and positives outweighed the negatives. Score 1 out of 5 Alaska summer Jeanne, 2005-06-15 No elevator, no air, community kitchen so strange mix of food smells wafted throughout this old, decrepit "historic" hotel. Window opened onto an unkempt alley that seemed to be a favorite urination spot for the evening bar hoppers. Typical of hotels under $150 in Alaska in the summer. Terrible by lower 48 standards but average for this price in Alaska during tourist season. Think of a hostel in a third world country for comparison. |
