Flights to Punta Cana

Budget Punta Cana flights arrive at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in La Altagracia province in the Dominican Republic. Over 50 airlines use this airport. Recent upgrades to manage increased international flights to Punta Cana include a runway and control tower with cutting-edge equipment. Have plenty of U.S. currency for fees, taxes, and tips at the airport. Competing for tips at the baggage claim is a local sport. Most resorts, being 30 minutes to an hour from the airport, include ground transfers via van or bus in their packages. Taxis should be reserved in advance. Save by booking round-trip to ensure a timely arrival for your trip home. Brush up on your Spanish to bargain more effectively with the natives. You will find that a thirty to fifty percent discount is accepted by most taxi drivers and street vendors.

Punta Cana Weather

Although temps are deliciously tropical at all times, the optimal time to arrive on flights to Punta Cana is March through mid-July. The few showers they get during this period usually occur after dinner or before breakfast. From then till October, expect three things: heat, humidity, and mosquitoes. After that, temperatures taper off to the 70F day and night. If you're an off-season bargain hunter, book cheap package deals and low cost round-trip air tickets for Punta Cana flights between March and November, focusing on March through May. Pack a sunscreen-bug spray combo, swimsuit, and tropical weight dinner attire.

Getting Around Punta Cana

If you plan to stay close to an all-inclusive resort after your flights to Punta Cana, stick to foot travel or book with a tour operator. Bus schedules are erratic and the buses often overcrowded. Brave travelers can take local taxis, whose drivers have native disregard for speed limits and stop signs. When planning activities, keep in mind that the center of Punta Cana suffers from gridlock. Motoconchos (motorcycle cabs) provide no helmets and have a high incidence of collisions. Resort concierges gladly call taxis. Save half simply by hailing them from the street, then firmly bargain before setting foot inside the vehicle. Use taxis for dinner, sightseeing, and exploring between Punta Cana flights. Pass on tap water and ice (snow cones, frozen drinks, and cubes) until you're State-side again.

Punta Cana Attractions

When you've sufficiently recovered from your flights to Punta Cana and are up to adventures, just say the word. Punta Cana really does offer something for everyone, couples, groups, and families alike.

  • Freestyle Catamaran Tours, a cruise with coral stops, where passengers are encouraged to hand-feed tropical fish
  • Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park, a conservation program featuring swims in medicinal lagoons, horseback riding, and lots of fossil rocks and animal and plant species unique to Punta Cana
  • Macao Surf Camp, affordable daily rentals and lessons with individual instruction at every level for maximum safety and family fun
  • Catalonia Royal Tulum Beach, an area designated free of boat traffic, great for snorkeling with easy public beach access
  • Artesany Center, soak up Dominican culture with live shows and genuine indigenous crafts handcrafted of wood and ceramic materials
  • Punta Cana When to Go

When it comes to crowds, Punta Cana has serious seasonal fluctuations, and in the last decade it has burst into the mainstream as a convenient and affordable all-inclusive winter hot spot. This means the prime tourist season runs from late December to early April, when the weather is at its best. During this time hotels and beaches can be packed, but temperatures stay supremely comfortable, with days in the low 80s and nights dipping to the low 70s.

In the summer hurricane season, from June to November, the region can get downright empty, not to mention sweltering hot. Unlike Caribbean destinations farther south, the Dominican Republic is directly in the path of many tropical storms, and landfalls are common, so weigh that consideration carefully and get good travel insurance when planning for an off-season trip to Punta Cana. September and October have especially strong weather, and in fact, some resorts will close then to make improvements for the high season.

Shoulder-season travel—April and May—is the best way to beat the crowds and possibly score a deal on accommodations and flights. Weather will be a bit warmer than in the winter, though only be a few degrees.

Because it’s little more than a resort zone, Punta Cana itself doesn’t have a lot in the way of festivals and local events, but the Dominican Republic—like most Latin American countries—is very religious and therefore celebrates all major Christian holidays. Unique happenings to consider include the procession of Our Lady of Altagracia, a countrywide pilgrimage to the beautiful basilica in Higüey town, about 45 minutes from the hotel zones. Another is the Punta Cana Carnival in late February or early March.
