Flights to Portland
Portland International Airport (PDX) is a hub for cheap Portland flights on SkyWest (United), Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, and SeaPort Airlines. Passengers enjoy many free services, such as Wi-Fi, postal services, and a recreational area for little ones. The MAX, a light rail transport, is the preferred public access for budget flights to Portland. I-205 is the nearest freeway. The all-hours stores and eateries have a mandate to charge no more at the airport than at locations outside the airport. Plus, there is no sales tax in Oregon. A four-time winner of Conde Nast Traveler magazine's "Top U.S. Airport for Business Travelers," PDX is highly respected for its environmental practices, like solar panels, light rail transfer, and recycling of spent cooking oil and grease. In addition, as part of the South Runway Reconstruction Project, the old asphalt was completely recycled.
September is the best time for visits via low cost Portland flights. The sights are less crowded, and the weather's not so wet. December finds Portland at its lowest temperatures and greatest rainfall. July is the exact opposite, with hot and dry being the standard fare. Take a rain jacket, sweatshirt, and Birkenstocks or Doc Martens. As for cameras, bring a wide-angle lens for architectural shots and an external flash for indoor food and people pics. Fit a big backpack, in case you find sales on souvenirs, into a smaller wheeled piece of luggage for easier mass transit maneuvering.
Getting Around Portland
If driving a rental car or bicycling after arriving on discount flights to Portland, there are a few things you should know. Bike boxes are green squares painted on the road at 14 intersections. At these intersections, bikers stop inside the bike boxes, while motorists halt at the white line behind them. Also, motorists cannot turn right on red here. Bicyclists have that and the green light right of way. Public transport options for visitors who snagged deals on Portland flights include MAX light rail, Portland streetcar, Free Rail Zone, Transit Mall, and TriMet buses. Visit trimet.org for a complete mass transit travel planner, system map, routes, and timetables for bus stops and train arrivals, apps, text IDs, and more.
Whether you're starved for serenity, shopping, dinner, or natural scenery, flights to Portland will start you off on the right foot. After dropping off your bags from Portland flights, head for these:
- "Best of Portland," a guided walking tour that gives you the local scoop on Portland's culture and dining scenes
- Waterfront Park, 22 blocks packed with spring blooms, a busy summer and fall calendar of events, and a great place to walk, bike, or skate
- Japanese Garden, a serene green space for contemplation with attention to the deeper meaning of plant and object placement in diverse designs
- Mount Hood, a peak of 11,249 feet with glaciers, hiking, skiing, and en route views from the Columbia River Gorge
- Portland Saturday Market, an affordable taste of diverse cuisines and local crafts under the Burnside Bridge
Portland When to Go
Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Portland is in the Pacific Northwest, and for much of the year, that means precipitation. Not a lot of it (New York and Miami both get more inches of rain per year), but a steady drizzle. In fact, it’s not uncommon to fight rain every single day of the month in March.
December averages only 65.1 hours of sunshine a month. But temps rarely drop below freezing at any point during the year, especially during the day. Winter brings performances by the Portland Opera, Oregon Symphony, White Bird contemporary dance troupe, and Portland Jazz Festival.
Summers here are actually warm, sunny, and dry, thanks to the city’s inland location (it’s an hour from the coast, which means no cool sea breezes). In July and August, the mercury can sometimes top 100. With the combination of the Cascade mountain range and the funnel of the Columbia River Gorge, the weather can occasionally get funky—thunderstorms coming off the nearby peaks, freezing air rolling down the river. Everyone takes advantage of bright summer days in the form of summer concerts at the Oregon Zoo (July–August), a five-day Waterfront Blues Festival around the Fourth of July, and the Bite of Oregon food fest and the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival in August.
