Fly to Konya

Turkey has become an increasingly popular place to visit, and if you fly to Konya, a city that traces its roots back several thousand years, you'll get an amazing look at the past. Originally called Iconium, the city did not change its name to Konya until the 12th century, by which time it had been destroyed, rebuilt and conquered countless times, each change adding to the mix of cultures.

Attractions

One thing every visitor should see is the iconic Silk Road, a network of merchant trails stretching from Turkey to China, which made trade flourish and cultures mix over the centuries. Konya is known as the city of the whirling dervishes, and visitors can see ecstatic dancers at the Mevlana Commemoration Festival in early December at the Mevlana Museum. The museum is another fascinating stop; it holds the tomb of Jelaleddin Rumi (1207-1273), known as one of the greatest spiritual thinkers and teachers of all time. Visitors frequent the Alaettin Mosque, which sits on top of a hill in the center of Konya. It's the city's oldest mosque, drawing thousands of visitors every year.

Hints and tips

From April through October, temperatures average in the 50s through the 80s, with July and August being the warmest. Snowy winter temperatures drop to between 32 and 50 degrees. Fly to Konya Airport (KYA), and then head for the city center, where you can hop on Konya's convenient tramway network to start your tour.
