  • Beijing When to Go

The capital city of Beijing sits in the northern half of China, so while the summers get pretty hot and humid, with highs in the mid to high 80s, the winters can easily dip below 20 degrees in the coldest months.

High season in Beijing encompasses the hot summer months between June and early September, with another huge uptick during the Chinese New Year in February. Because Chinese New Year is a holiday that places a heavy emphasis on family, domestic travel within China during this time can get especially crowded, as many of Beijing’s migrant workers visit their hometowns over the break.

May Day (May 1) and National Day (October 1) are also busy travel dates. On these two popular holidays, many Chinese citizens embark on quick getaways, meaning you can expect roads and public transportation to get very congested.

Shoulder season is in the spring and fall (April to May and October to November, respectively) when the weather is more pleasant. The popular advice is to visit during these months because they offer not only fewer crowds and lower prices, but also nicer weather.

Low season is during the winter from December through January, when Beijing is at its coldest. Expect snow and for many locals to hibernate indoors during these chilly months. But, on the plus side, it is one of the few times a year that you can visit the Great Wall without facing down teeming hordes of people.
