If you reside in Washington, DC and are ready to get away to a Caribbean paradise for some tropical culture and vibrant nights, consider visiting Santo Domingo, an island steeped in history and heritage. Santo Domingo was founded in 1498, which makes it the oldest European city in the new world. The Santo Domingo Colonial Zone was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. The flight from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Santo Domingo lasts between five and seven hours.
In 1514, the settlers of Santo Domingo started construction on the Catedral Primada de America, which still stands today as a gorgeous mixture of Gothic and Plateresque architecture styles. Santo Domingo houses the oldest street in the new world, Calle Las Damas. Several colonial buildings still reside on the street, including a fortress and former noble residences. Nature lovers will likely enjoy a stroll through Jardin Botanico Nacional, a botanical garden that has more than 2 miles of native flora, aquatic plants and orchids.
When you fly from Washington, DC to Santo Domingo, your plane will land at Las Americas International Airport (SDQ). To get into the city center, you can rent a car, ride the metro or hire a cab. Year-round temperatures range between the high 60s and the high 80s with the most favorable conditions occurring between November and March. Hurricane season sweeps through from August to October.
