If you're looking for a change of pace from easygoing Midland/Odessa, Houston is a stunning city right in your home state of Texas. People come to Houston to enjoy its remarkable downtown area and arts community, and as an increasingly diverse community, it has become a recognized place to try out international cuisines. After arriving at Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) by taxi or EZRider bus, you can fly from Midland/Odessa to Houston in less than two hours.
Houston's downtown area is composed of four districts, most notably the theater district, which is one of the largest in the United States. In the South Loop district of the city, you can see the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum and stroll through Hermann Park. The Galleria Area is well known for the architecture of its homes and the art deco styling of the River Oaks Shopping Center. Along the outskirts of the city, you can visit the NASA space center or tour the WWII Battleship Texas.
When you fly to Houston, you'll be arriving at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Houston lacks a complete public transportation system, but you can get around via METRO buses and the METROrail light rail system if you stick to the downtown area. The rest of the city is well acquainted with urban sprawl and is a bit too spread out to navigate without a rental car. Annually in February through March, you can attend the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, and in April, iFest celebrates music and culture.
