Flights to Hawaii

Hawaii flights can be routed to one of Hawaii's three international airports, as well as a handful of regional airports connecting the islands. Most flights to Hawaii arrive at Kona International Airport, located in West Hawaii about seven miles from Kailua-Kona. Kona International is Hawaii's principal airport, serving international, inter-island, and overseas flights, as well as commuter flights. The largest airport in Hawaii is Honolulu International Airport, located on the island of Oahu. Honolulu International is a hub for Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Starting in 2006, the airport underwent an ongoing modernization project including updated amenities. Finally, travelers on Hawaii flights may land at Hilo International Airport on the east side of Hawaii, two miles east of Hilo. Hilo International primarily handles inter-island traffic.

Hawaii Weather

No matter when travelers arrive on Hawaii flights, balmy temperatures and cool breezes will welcome them into the island paradise. Hawaii has only two seasons: summer (May-October) and winter (November-April). Average temperatures in Hawaii hover between 78F and 85F year round, with average water temperatures only a few degrees lower. Most of the rain in Hawaii falls in the mountains, creating a tropical environment. Based on elevation and proximity to volcanic mountains, climate can range from that of alpine regions and rain forests to deserts and beaches. However, the individual island climates can vary from each other.

Getting Around Hawaii

Upon arriving on flights to Hawaii, travelers will discover that public transportation in Hawaii is very limited. Although there is bus service available on most islands, bus routes and schedules are designed to serve the local workforce, and thus visitors will find service very infrequent. Most airports in Hawaii do not offer shuttle service to local hotels, and travelers on Hawaii flights are advised to rent cars so they can travel more freely. For those who do not wish to rent cars, the Hawaii County Mass Transit Agency's Shared Ride Taxi Program is the best option. The Program serves Hilo, where taxis offer door-to-door transportation for as little as $2.00. Because many of the islands are quite small, walking and cycling are also viable options.

Hawaii Attractions

The moment passengers on flights to Hawaii arrive, they will realize that the islands live up to their reputation as exotic natural utopias. Hawaiian life will appeal to both those seeking adventure and relaxation, with attractions including:

  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the site of one of the most active volcanoes in the world and two campgrounds
  • The USS Arizona Memorial, which includes a tour of the sunken WWII battleship as well as a documentary film
  • Hulopoe Beach, a pristine waterfront home to dolphins and whales and ideal for surfing or swimming
  • Paradise Cove Luau, a celebration of Hawaiian arts and culture including a traditional pig roast and luau dance
  • Liliuokalani Gardens, Japanese style gardens where visitors will find tranquility in the culture and natural beauty
