Flights to Costa Rica
With two international airports in San José, and one each in Liberia and Limón, finding flights to Costa Rica has never been easier. The Juan Santamaria International Airport is the primary airport of the capital city of San José. It's actually located closer to the city of Alajuela, 12 miles west of the downtown area. A hub for TACA/Lacsa and the domestic Sansa Airlines, the Juan Santamaria airport has only recently been challenged for international traffic by the international airport in Liberia. Liberia's Daniel Oduber International Airport is the place for Costa Rica flights that take tourists to the western part of Costa Rica and the Pacific Coast. Whichever airport you land in, you will be met with friendly and helpful people.
Costa Rica Weather
Flights to Costa Rica take you into a center of eco-tourism. No matter what season you visit, there will be something natural for you to do. Every season has advantages. While many people prefer the high dry season because of the lower incidents of rain, the low rainy season has much to praise. No matter what season you travel to Costa Rica, remember that it is a rain forest, and that means rain, whether it's a "dry" season or not. But if you are looking for bone dry, try the northwest beach area of Guanacaste during January, February, or March.
Getting Around Costa Rica
No matter when you go to Costa Rica, take some time to plan how you are going to get around the country once you arrive. Almost every method of transportation leads to San José, from road to bus to train. But beyond that, there are major transportation hurdles to overcome. Rain forests make roads difficult. Sometimes buses need to travel 50 miles and 8 hours to make a 7-mile journey. Luckily there are several types of alternatives. Local hotels and tour operators offer travel by minibus, boat, and horseback that let you see the beautiful forests and still cut hours off of travel time. Just remember to plan in advance.
Costa Rica Attractions
osta Rica is the birthplace of eco-tourism on a grand scale. While touristy things still take a toll on the environment, the government and the people of the country take great pride in their natural resources and work hard to maintain them. Things you will want to see on your visit include:
- Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Very different from lowland rain forests, the clouds rarely part here in the upper altitudes
- Tortuguero National Park. The marked trail on the beach will let you observe turtle nests
- Guanacaste National Park. Animals and volcanoes best seen by hiking, nature walks, and bird watching
- Barra Honda Caverns National Park. Well maintained hiking trails (but get permission and a guide to see the cave system)
- Juan Castro Blanco National Park region. This region includes incredible topiary garden, fruit farms and ornamental flower farms
