During your Los Angeles vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Mistral
Another great French eatery on Ventura Boulevard, this classy establishment feels very New York. In other words, the gentlemen waiters know how to serve with efficiency, the room's never too bright and there's no patio. Sink into the plush chairs and enjoy hearty, rich fare. The steak is covered with butter and is mouth-watering. The roast chicken is garlic-laden and great, too. The wine list is very good and offers some nice complements. Bring your own bottle of wine for a USD10 corkage fee.
Simply Wholesome
This eatery has become an integral part of the Windsor Hills area. In addition to the restaurant, there is also a fully stocked health food store. There is also a community room which is frequently used by African-American motivational speakers and other health advocates. There is a good selection of salads with fresh and crisp vegetables. The staff members will tell you that they offer clean food, which means they use as many organic ingredients as possible. They also offer delicious, low fat seafood, chicken Entpasta choices.
Formosa Cafe
Celebrated by Curtis Hanson in his masterpiece of film noir, "L.A. Confidential", from the James Ellroy novel, the Formosa Cafe is a motherlode of City of the Angeles folklore. This Rococo hangout started out as a Chinese eatery but in recent years it has expanded the menu to include some Thai, Japanese and Korean dishes. The popular venue has been around since 1932 and a storm of protests by loyal patrons saved it from becoming a parking lot for the neighboring Warner Bros Hollywood Studios. Step inside this blast from the past and you enter a dark black and red venue with walls lined with celebrities mostly from the 50s. This is definitely a destination you have to know about. There is something about its appeal that defies description but Angelenos have had a love affair with the place since it first opened its doors.
