During your Oakland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Pozole
Customers from Financial District types to local artists come here for a lot of food at low prices, such as the Pollo sin Grasso, a rich stew made with skinless chicken breasts served over fluffy white rice. Cuban quesadillas are stuffed with mushrooms, roasted garlic and peppers and served with sides of fried bananas as well as the traditional rice and black beans. Oaxcan tamales are stuffed with bananas and topped with mango salsa. The decor is an oddly whimsical tribute to The Day of the Dead, with skeletons and tombstones everywhere. The wait staff is as fun as the atmosphere and as efficient as you could want. Cash only.
Caesar's
This old-fashioned Italian restaurant with the motto "Where the Italians eat" is a North Beach institution. Since 1956, this family friendly establishment has been serving traditional cuisine like homemade ravioli, Veal Parmesan, steak and pork chops. Not much has changed here since the 50s. You will enjoy an old-fashioned meal in an old-fashioned atmosphere. Most meals range from $10-20. Add an additional $10 for Caesars signature "seven-course meal." For dessert both the Tiramisu and the Cheesecake is divine.
Alta Mira
The view from this venerable eatery is one of the best in the Bay Area. The food is American with a French accent. Succulent roast chicken is always on the menu as is a filet mignon cooked to order and some lovely pasta dishes. The menu, like many in the area, changes with the seasons, but the quality is constant. The dining area has high ceilings and huge windows that take advantage of the vista that includes The City and the Bay. The wait staff is personable and efficient. The wine list is good with California vintages being the order of the day along with some select imports from France. A good bottle starts at $12.

Castle Inn Motel
This recently renovated, centrally located hotel goes the extra mile to make sure your trip is stress free. A friendly tour desk is eager to arrange tours, auto rental, and airport shuttles for the busy traveler. You will stay in a nice-sized, comfortable room at an affordable rate. Its Van Ness Avenue location provides easy access downtown and to many of The City's most popular attractions via quick and reliable public transportation. It is a proud member of the Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and approved by the AAA motorist club.
Hotel Triton
With its bold splashes of red, blue, and yellow, this hotel is as much a work of art as it is an accommodation. A large mural depicting the god Triton himself brightens up the reception area. The lobby is a collection of unusual, though comfortable, furniture created by local designers. Each room is decorated with a similar flair, giving guests the opportunity to spend the night in a cutting edge, artistic setting. The hotel is very conveniently located. Walk to Union Square and the Financial District, or step through Chinatown's Gate less than a block away.
Allison Hotel
This charming Union Square hotel dates back to 1909 and its latest renovation in 1996. The recent renovation, though bringing its appearance up to contemporary standards, did not diminish the unique European qualities of its decor. It is one of the few hotels in the neighborhood that offers such affordable rates, maybe because some rooms share a bath. And what a neighborhood it is with its world-class shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities.
