During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Brother Jimmy's BBQ
This bar offers it all: cheap drinks, great food, live music, bar games and more sports than you can imagine. Known for its barbecue, the place features a different special every night. Try the all-you-can-eat ribs on Sundays or the fried chicken on Tuesdays. Make sure you stop by for 10-cent wings on Wednesdays. The weekends bring local bands, or check out sports on the big screen. Brother Jimmy's is a Carolina bar, so make sure you stop by for a Duke or UNC game, if you are brave enough.
Ofie
West African home cooking in Chicago. The interior is warm and exotic, replete with masks and artwork straight from the motherland. Some strong starters include the peanutty chicken soup, as well as the black-eyed pea fritters. Eating with your hands is encouraged when the entrees arrive. Use the mashed potato "fufu" to scoop up spiced meats and mixed greens. African wines and lagers are available for libation-lovers.
Cafe Matou
This elegant bistro may seem a bit out of place in its somewhat downscale surroundings on the edge of Logan Square, but Cafe Matou makes it worthwhile to explore the changing neighborhood. The walls of the spacious restaurant are draped with local art, and cat-shaped chandeliers illuminate the main dining room. Traditional French Country fare can be complemented with a selection from the predominantly French wine list and perhaps a delicious homemade dessert.
Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the
Chicago area, including:
House of Blues Hotel
You have to enjoy the Blues culture to stay at this hotel--a crazy-quilt of artifacts, primitive art, jazzy colors and, of course, live music. Guests receive a complimentary compact disk upon arrival. The name of the hotel comes from the club next door, part of a chain that has cropped up all around the country. Come here for fun and entertainment, next door or at the 36-lane modern bowling alley in the hotel. ò
Westin Michigan Avenue
Located on the north end of the Magnificent Mile, and about a 20-minute taxi ride to the McCormick Place Convention Center, this is a large tourist-class hotel with 424 rooms and 28 suites. The hotel is well-known for housing visiting sports teams, but the staff frowns upon other guests' attempts to snap athletes' pictures. Guests are better advised to find their entertainment at the nearby Oak Street Beach, Hancock Observatory, The 900 North Michigan Shops and Water Tower Place.
Hotel Inter-Continental
This hotel was built in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club. Parts of its heritage remain, the most obvious example being the Roman-style swimming pool, which is open to the public. Johnny Weismuller, the Olympic swimmer who later became famous as Hollywood's version of Tarzan, trained at the original club. The landmark exterior adds additional charm and is a central skyscraper along the "Magnificent Mile." For truly royal treatment, opt for one of the suites. You just might mingle with the rich and famous. Run by the Inter-Continental Corporation, this first-rate establishment, with its 815 rooms (one of the largest in the Mid-West), will not disappoint, but be prepared to pay first-rate prices. For the business visitor to the Windy City, it's nice to know the Inter-Continental is about a 15-minute taxi trip to the McCormick Place Convention Center.
