During your Austin vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Manuel's
With all the black leather, neon and jazz here, one might be suspicious. Is this a trendy Mexican joint where the food takes a back seat to the slick atmosphere? The answer is a resounding "no." One bite of the Chile Relleno en Nogada (USD10.50) is the proof—tender pork picadillo studded with raisins and stuffed into a roasted poblano pepper, then sauced with walnut cream. Or try the enchiladas, gorditas and flautas—all make excellent choices. Sunday brunch, with live jazz, is a winner, but dinner and happy hour are the real standout events. A second location is on Jollyville Road.
Threadgill's
Neon beer signs and vintage clocks line the walls of this Austin institution, a gas station-turned-restaurant that also offers up live music. If comfort food is your pleasure, this is the right place, and if you like your vegetables, you will be in heaven. Whatever the entree, seconds on vegetables come free. Pork roast and fried chicken are great, but the chicken-fried steak is not to be missed. The San Antonio Squash will please even those who turn up their noses at the vegetable. And of course, the mashed potatoes and black-eyed peas are heavenly. Rich, crumbly cornbread comes free, but white-flour rolls are extra (and worth it).
Sushi Sake
Just northwest of downtown, located in Gateway Square, is one of the newest additions to a growing population of sushi restaurants in Austin. The décor is simple and modern in design, with muted browns and tans filling the color scheme. The ambience from day to night is quite different. Daytime hours offer a casual atmosphere for business meetings or quick lunches. In the evening, candles light the dining area creating a relaxed environment. The curved sushi bar seats more than just a handful of people and the sushi chefs enjoy conversing with customers. If you do not see a sushi roll you are interested in on the menu, discuss what you are looking for with the sushi chefs and they will try to accommodate your needs. There is also an extensive Japanese menu, including a separate vegetarian section. Single pieces of sushi start at $1.75. Sushi rolls range $3.50 to $6.95. Take-out orders taken before 7pm.
