During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Laurel Restaurant & Bar
Starting out a few years ago as the latest "in" spot for dinner, this restaurant has matured into a permanent San Diego favorite. Located just off of Balboa Park, it is a popular theater dinner choice, with a lively after-five upper-echelon business crowd in the bar. The food note struck is southern French, and the Provencal dishes still dominate much of the menu. The menu changes twice per week. Recent items included Chicken in Crock and Venison with a dried cherry crust and onion confit.
Café Athena
Airy and bright, this strip-mall restaurant manages to exude charm and a taste of the Greek islands. The restaurant offers a rich array of traditional dishes, plus some new creations. The Seafood Bisque ranks with the best. Salmon Dolmas (grape leaves stuffed with salmon) are a delightful variation on the old rice-and-tomato theme. Greek and Californian wines are available. An artful re-creation of Cycladic architecture greets visitors. On the walls are well-rendered views of Santorini by various artists. Outside, a handful of sidewalk tables encourage people watching.
Star of India
Step inside this authentic Indian venue and you will swear you are in Delhi or Bombay. The atmosphere is low-key and the cuisine is clearly authentic. The dining room is covered in tan and brown colors, from the walls to the conservative pictures. White tablecloths are the exception to this color scheme, accompanied by a white vase of flowers on every table. On the menu, Tandoori specialties are popular, including the Chicken Garlic Kabab and Tandoori Shrimp. Vegetarians may consider Bengan Bhartha, offering eggplant, peas, onions, garlic, ginger and tomatoes.
