During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Kaleidoscope
In the summer, this is a very nice place to have breakfast at the six-corners intersection that is the heart of Wicker Park. The menu is quite eclectic and includes such selections as stuffed French toast and huevos rancheros wraps. You can sit outside on the patio and watch the morning rush to the elevated train station just behind the restaurant. Service is good and prices average between $6-10.
Giordano's
Since its 1974 opening by two brothers from Italy, this local favorite has received numerous prizes. It really is Giordano's famous stuffed pizza here, have no doubt. While this local chain restaurant has several locations, this is the biggest and best. The mostaccioli here is more than simply tasty—it is also priced just right at $6.85. Lasagna Florentine with Alfredo sauce also holds its own at $7.95.
Aubriot
Chef Eric Aubriot worked at two of France's top restaurants before presiding over this spot, named after him. The menu varies with the seasons, but, in the past, Aubriot has done wonderful things with sea bass, lamb loin, grilled quail and duck ($15-$25). On warm nights, try the intimate sun porch. Inside, the restaurant is narrow, with cherry wood furnishings, a central bar and tasteful decor. Any style of dress is allowed here. Three-course, pre-theater menu runs $35 per person.
Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the
Chicago area, including:
Lenox Suites
This is a mid-priced hotel made up of modestly decorated suites, in five different classes. Although the rooms are kind of bland, and the rest of the hotel fairly nondescript, families enjoy the larger rooms, which include a pull-out sofa. The hotel's close proximity to Michigan Avenue and the Ontario Street theme restaurants is a plus. The attached restaurant, Houston's, has been known as a hangout for Chicago Bulls players, and features tasty steakhouse offerings.
Seneca Hotel
For those looking to stay near the heart of Michigan Avenue, but away from the throngs of tourists, this 150-room hotel may be the perfect place. The lobby may not be what you would expect from a first class hotel, but the rooms more than make up for its lack of charm. Comfortable and plush best describe the accommodations, which are reasonably priced. Many of the suites include Jacuzzis. This hotel tends to book up quickly, so call far in advance to make your reservation for this great Magnificent Mile hideaway. The McCormick Place Convention Center is just a 15-minute taxi ride away.
Best Western Grant Park
This hotel is a good choice for thrifty museum lovers. The rates are reasonable, and John G. Shedd Aquarium and Oceanarium , Adler Planetarium and Field Museum (The) are all blocks away. On the downside, there isn't much else around, and the Loop isn't accessible by foot. Tourists at the hotel should familiarize themselves with the city's public transportation or use cabs to take full advantage of the city sites.
