In a rather stark storefront near Arizona State University, the Assadi's turn out terrific tender and tasty kabobs and a few other choice Persian-style entrees, sides and beverages. Diners do not come for the decor; you will find just a few tables and a display case. They do, however, come here for the well-prepared ethnic cuisine that is offered. The service is fast and friendly, the food flavorful. Beef, Lamb and Vegetarian Kabobs, plus the unusual Cornish hen kabob called Joojeh. Kabobs come with basmati rice and grilled vegetables.
Korean Garden
This understated restaurant in an A-frame building offers a unique brand of entertainment—cooking your own food. Built in to some of the tables, hibachi-style grills allow you to cook the beef or chicken, wrap into lettuce and dip into provided sauces. Request a grill when reserving a table. In addition to the cook-your-own meals, try the popular barbecued short ribs and Korean pancakes with pork. For kimchi fans, you will find a well-balanced version here. Dinners are $10 to $15.
Timothy Michael's Hideaway
Don't let the name fool you. There's nothing cloak-and-dagger about this modern American place. Both the decor and the cuisine are straightforward, regionally inspired classics, kicked up for contemporary palates. Maybe the only mystery is that there's not one Timothy Michael, but two: Timothy Perkins, who manages the restaurant, and Michael Hodgins, its chef. Black and ivory furnishings and black and white photography create an American version of the yin/yang effect. A fountain and fireplace in the courtyard makes perfect outdoor dining. A few house specialties include Buffalo mozzarella, tomato and roasted chicken salad; Jack Daniels-glazed baby back ribs; bourbon-and-maple-syrup-glazed salmon; and rack of lamb. Lunches average $8-12, dinner entrees $12-25. The wine list features more than 60 selections, with many in the $25 to $40 range.
