Barney's
This casual restaurant serves hamburgers, tofu burgers, and garden burgers, all gourmet-style. Diners have the choice of creating their own burger, topped with items such as sauteed spinach and pesto sauce, or choosing from one of the many specialty burgers offered on the menu. Burgers include the French burger with blue cheese and bacon served on a baguette and the Garlic Gardenburger served with garlic, eggplant and tomatoes. The service is quick and friendly.
Citizen Cake
This wildly popular bakery-cafe is sleek and contemporary with its pale wood and light-filled space. The baked goods, the true reason to come here, take the art of the pastry beyond the ordinary. Custard Tarts are tinged with rosewater for a subtle perfume that enhances the rich vanilla flavor. Find house-made breads like rosemary-fig loaves, buttery, light-as-a-feather brioche and dense cinnamon rolls. Table service offers light cafe fare with the tangy spinach salad a standout among the tasty sandwiches and hearty soups also on the menu. The service is friendly and quick.
Lois the Pie Queen
When this place hit its 50th anniversary, that fact was celebrated at the Oakland Museum of California. That is how truly beloved this East Bay eatery is. It is dedicated to old-fashioned southern cooking and treating the clientele at its diner-style establishment like family. There are not many other places north of the Mason-Dixon line, or south for that matter, that offer authentic black-eyed peas or Lemon Icebox Pie (a sort of lemon meringue on steroids). If you have never had grits and eggs before, there is no better place to sample them. Whole pies run $10.50-15. Note: Cash only.
