During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
D & J Bistro
The place may be part of a strip-mall, but for fresh, French/Mediterranean cooking at reasonable prices, you cannot go wrong with this long-time Lake Zurich bistro. Appetizers start at $5, entrees at $12. The three-course prix fixe menu is also a good deal at $24. Specialties include goat cheese tarts, duck liver mousse, rock shrimp ravioli, ostrich medallions, baby rack of lamb and creme brulee. Adventurous diners might be tempted to try the stingray. Service is refined and pleasant.
Star Bar
This casual neighborhood eatery offers romantic dining and charming ambiance. Stainless steel tables, a glowing fireplace (in season), soft, low lights, a comprehensive champagne list and mellow music enhance the mood. The menu is limited to appetizers and an array of desserts. The staff is exceptionally friendly, and cover charges vary depending on the night and event. Dress runs the gamut from jeans to suits, but everyone looks great with a chocolate martini in hand.
Original Mitchell's, (The)
This basic diner has all of the staples for both the late night and morning crowd, including hamburgers and fries, or ham and eggs and coffee. As the sister to another restaurant of the same name on Clark Street, it always guarantees a no-frills dining experience with plenty of heart-valve wrenching grease to satisfy even the most nocturnal of urges, with menu prices all below $12.
Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the
Chicago area, including:
Marriott Hotel
The $33 million renovation of the Marriott Hotel on Michigan Avenue upgraded both the common areas and the guest rooms. The lobby now includes a coffee bar, cigar bar, two restaurants and a galleria of shops. The guest rooms boast new furniture, carpeting, and bathroom amenities. In addition to the multitude of attractions nearby, hotel guests can also enjoy an indoor pool, sun deck, outdoor sports deck, spa, and basketball courts on the premises.
The Willows
Of the three hotels run by Neighborhood Inns, this one is by far the preferred choice. The sophisticated lobby, with its roaring fireplace, reflects the hotel's 1920s French heritage, and so do the elegant rooms. The location matches the hotel's charm. The tree-lined, residential street is the perfect place to call home during your stay in the Windy City. Lincoln Park, the Chicago Historical Society, and dozens of restaurants are all within walking distance.
Lenox Suites
This is a mid-priced hotel made up of modestly decorated suites, in five different classes. Although the rooms are kind of bland, and the rest of the hotel fairly nondescript, families enjoy the larger rooms, which include a pull-out sofa. The hotel's close proximity to Michigan Avenue and the Ontario Street theme restaurants is a plus. The attached restaurant, Houston's, has been known as a hangout for Chicago Bulls players, and features tasty steakhouse offerings.
